A fabricating post, shared on April 11 in Thai language on Facebook, cited a non-existent study from Chiang Mai University, suggesting that ingesting three ripened papaya seeds daily would kill cancer cells. This misinformation first emerged in October 2022 and resurfaced in February 2024, leading thousands to share the claim across social media platforms. Along with the viral posts was an unfounded video dissecting a ripe papaya, endorsing the supposed benefits of its seeds against various cancers. The bogus research cited in the posts was debunked by Prachya Kongtawelert, a biochemistry professor at Chiang Mai University, who clarified his work focuses on citrus and sesame extracts, not papaya seeds. Inevitably, the National Cancer Institute of Thailand discredited these claims, emphasising the lack of clinical evidence to support them, despite papaya being rich in vitamins A, C, and E. Meanwhile, health professionals keep praising the health benefits of onions known as the "queen of vegetables," yet how one could maximise these benefits remains to be explored. Unable to move without a pushback tractor, the situation created an Aircraft-On-Ground (AOG) scenario, necessitating immediate maintenance. The incident began at 10.32 am, when the incomplete functioning aircraft resulted in a hydraulic oil spill on the runway, thus posing a safety risk for other aircrafts. The airport authorities quickly issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), informing pilots about the temporary closure of Runway 09/27 for cleanup. Apart from the cleanup, authorities also evaluated the runway’s surface friction to ensure it met safety guidelines. By 11.37 am, just over an hour after the incident, normal operations on the runway were restored. In total, the malfunction affected 15 flights, according to a notice from Phuket Airport. Consequently, five inbound flights were rerouted to different airports, another five could not land, and five outbound flights were delayed. A latest report has highlighted Bangkok and Chiang Mai as two of the top 10 Asian cities for expats in 2024. The findings reinforce the appeal of Thailand to a global populace. Among all the cities assessed, Bangkok, known for its stunning temples and lively street food culture, ranked second. One of its key attractions is the rapidly declining cost of living. From 2022 to 2024, living costs in Bangkok dramatically dropped by over 50%, from US$2,715 to a reasonable US$1,048 per month. Chiang Mai, ranked fifth in the study, is celebrated for its tranquil temples, lush mountains, and a thriving community of digital nomads. The city offers an affordable lifestyle, with the cost of living estimated at US$665 per month, making it highly attractive to expats. Last year, Bangkok hosted 22.78 million foreign visitors. Typically, these tourists spent about 4.7 nights in the city and an average of 5,938 baht (US$173) daily. Opium and psilocybin mushrooms, known for their hallucinogenic effects, are now classified as Category 5 narcotics, differentiating them from marijuana and hemp extracts. Previously, substances such as kratom, marijuana, and hemp were removed from this category, leaving opium and magic mushrooms, along with marijuana and hemp extracts with a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) level over 0.2%. The directive clarifies that all drugs in Narcotics Category 5, excluding marijuana and hemp extracts, are approved for medical use and research. Six underage victims were rescued and taken in for interviews under the guidance of Thai multidisciplinary agencies, who are also providing necessary support to the victims. Puangmala was taken into custody, with computer devices and CCTV footage seized as potential evidence. The charges levelled against her include illicit prostitution and running a healthcare establishment without proper authorization. Prior to the arrest, the massage parlour had been under surveillance due to frequent change of locations, presumably to evade detection. Leads from the ongoing investigation led to this successful raid and rescue operation. Two Japanese men are under investigation by Thai police for allegedly murdering and dismembering a fellow countryman. The victim's remains, which included a skull and hands, were discovered in multiple black plastic bags discarded around Nonthaburi province. Authorities have taken into custody a Thai man, only identified as 'Game', who is suspected of having a role in the crime. Police are currently examining a tattoo discovered on a body part believed to be drawn in a style associated with the Japanese criminal syndicate, the Yakuza. Game has pleaded innocent, asserting that the victim had travelled with him as a front-seat passenger while the two wanted men sat in the back. As per his account to the police, on arriving at a warehouse, he was told to exit the car while the suspects accompanied the victim inside the building. Game then went for a cigarette. He alleges hearing a gunshot after which the pair emerged carrying several black plastic bags. They then directed him to several locations within the Bangbuathong district of Nonthaburi where they dumped the bags. Yet, the government has dismissed the Bank's proposal, stating there are no new elements in the recommendations. The BoT identifies low-income earners and state welfare card holders as the 'fragile' category. They predict a cash injection would stimulate the economy more effectively, as these groups are likely to spend more and buy local goods. The Bank's suggestion to implement the scheme in stages could decrease the strain on fiscal stability. However, the current format, costing approximately 500 billion baht, could result in long-term fiscal pressures, risk credit rating downgrades, and deter potential investors if the public debt stability is not maintained.
