  1. Workers Protest As Crane Collapses Killing 7, Injuring Many Others by TNR staff The factory construction site where workers are protesting after a tower crane collapsed killing seven of their colleagues. Photo: Matichon HUNDREDS of Myanmar workers refused to let rescuers enter a factory construction site in Rayong after a tower crane collapsed killing seven workers and injured many others as they demanded 5 million baht compensation for each of their colleagues killed, Matichon newspaper said this evening (Mar. 29). This factory is being built by Sin Ker Yuan Co. Ltd in Ta Sit subdistrict, Pluak Daeng district, with entry blocked after the accident. After some rescuers managed to drive in to help the injured, the hundreds of workers surrounded the vehicle and smashed parts of it as they did not want any of the bodies removed from the compound, fearing this would affect their compensation demand. The rescuers managed to take one seriously injured worker to the hospital but none of the others injured nor the dead bodies. Zoom Rayong’s Facebook page said Pluak Daeng police station superintendent is negotiating with the workers through an interpreter. 3. Graffiti vandalism on the Chon Buri bridge has sparked outrage among locals, leading to calls for swift action by authorities. Social media was abuzz with criticism after images of spray-painted railings on the bridge surfaced online. The Chon Buri bridge, a landmark of the city, was defaced with large, blue spray-painted words, including crude language that has not only marred the bridge’s appearance but also offended passersby. Boontham Rungcharoen Wiwat, a 62 year old resident who exercises on the bridge, expressed his dismay at the sight of the graffiti, which had not been there on previous days. He emphasised that the bridge is public property and the responsibility of the whole community, serving as the face of Chon Buri. The defacement makes the bridge look dirty and damaged, and the foul language is particularly upsetting. Boontham urged the young perpetrators to stop such acts of vandalism on public structures and appealed to the authorities to find and punish the individuals responsible as quickly as possible. He also suggested that the vandals should be the ones to clean up their mess so they could feel the weight of their actions. The incident has highlighted the issue of vandalism in public spaces and the need for greater awareness and respect for community property. The bridge, also known as the Chaloem Phrakiat or the new bridge, runs along the coastline and is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Its defacement has not only caused visual pollution but also raised concerns about the cultural values being upheld by the younger generation, reported KhaoSod. The authorities have been asked to investigate the incident and take appropriate measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. In related news, two Russian men on a graffiti rampage after a booze-fuelled escapade in Patong, Phuket, have been arrested. Police Major General Saranyu Chamnarnrat, Deputy Chief of the Provincial Police Region 8, revealed the arrest of the Russian vandals on Tuesday. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-30 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. 4. Police reform may be easier than everyone thinks by Tulsathit Taptim File photo : Sittra Biabungerd (L) Absolutely hopeless as it may seem, the critical state of the Thai police deserves one last try. 5. Absolutely hopeless as it may seem, the critical state of the Thai police deserves one last try. And who says the last, desperate measure has to be extremely tough, costly or divisive? This week has seen rock bottom. Just when the country thought nothing would beat the Kamnan Nok incident, the most powerful men in the force have been accused, directly or indirectly, of involvement in massive and systematic bribe taking. In a matter of months, the badly-tainted image of the Thai police has been blown up apparently beyond repair. Newscasters and commentators are in unison about the force being rotten to its core. They all agree while “good apples” are out there, the bad ones have been too dominant and unstoppable. Transfers and promotions are less and less on merits, and corrupt practices are feeding on themselves. Bad bosses are making initially-good subordinates corrupt. Good bosses are getting overwhelmed by bad subordinates. Worse still, those with the disease are spreading it to politicians, reporters, community leaders, and finally the Thai society as a whole. A traffic offender feeling the urge to “settle” charges right on the spot because it would be cheaper and more convenient is an early symptom. According to well-known lawyer Sittra Biabungerd, there are too many bribe-taking opportunities nowadays. Illegal Indian immigrants selling nuts need to pay bribes, so do truck drivers, employers of visa-less foreign migrants, owners of entertainment venues that violate age limits or closing times, operators of Thai massage parlours offering “special” services, underground gambling racketeers and so on. by Tulsathit Taptim File photo : Sittra Biabungerd (L) Full story: Thai PBS 2024-03-30 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. 6. Court acquits protesters involved in 2008 seizure of Don Mueang airport The Criminal Court ordered the acquittal today of 67 members of the now defunct political pressure group known as the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), after finding them not guilty on multiple charges related to the seizure of Don Mueang airport, from November 24 until December 3, 2008, in an attempt to force the resignation of then Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat. 7. The Criminal Court ordered the acquittal today of 67 members of the now defunct political pressure group known as the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), after finding them not guilty on multiple charges related to the seizure of Don Mueang airport, from November 24 until December 3, 2008, in an attempt to force the resignation of then Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat. The charges included terrorism, incitement of public unrest, illegal seizure of an airport, intimidation of officials, assault, resisting arrest and tampering with satellite communications equipment. After the reading of the verdict, one of the 67 co-defendants, Panthep Puapongpan, dean of Rangsit University’s Institute of Integrative Medicine and Anti-Aging, hailed it as one of the most significant for several years, as it recognises the right and liberty of people to stage peaceful protests and that the PAD protests were beneficial to the people as a whole. Regarding the siege of the airport, the court ruled that there was no prosecution evidence to prove that any of the 67 defendants had undertaken activities disrupting the operations of the airport or that aeronautical communications had been disrupted. The court said that the PAD’s protests were a result of the government’s attempts to amend the Constitution, to exonerate the Palang Prachachon party, which had been charged with election fraud, and to strip the Assets Examination Committee of its power to investigate the alleged corruption of Thaksin regime. 14. A chilling discovery has been made along the Udon Ratthaya Expressway, where additional human remains were found not far from where a skull was previously located. A Laotian woman came forward with critical information regarding her husband, missing for two months, identifying the skull through its distinct dental work. Late last night, police were alerted to the presence of human remains in a grassy area adjacent to the expressway in Bang Sai, Ayutthaya province. Police, forensic experts, and local volunteers converged on the scene, where they discovered human remains, including parts of a pelvis, bearing signs of burning and sharp force trauma. The exact cause of these injuries remains undetermined, as does the identity of the deceased. The proximity of the newly found remains to the previously discovered skull, a mere 50 metres away, suggests a possible connection. Investigators have been working tirelessly, ploughing through evidence and gathering information. Just two days ago, a human skull was found amidst the charred remains of a grass fire on the same expressway. Rescue worker Sahaphap Unsuangnern recounted the eerie experience of collecting the skull and the overpowering stench of decay that only he seemed to perceive. DNA testing Adding to the complexity, a Laotian woman has approached Sahaphap, claiming her 29 year old husband has been missing from their home in Phai Ling, Ayutthaya province, for two months. The husband, along with a male friend also of Laotian nationality, vanished along with their motorcycle. The woman’s description of her husband’s dental work, a distinctive false front tooth and molars, matched that of the found skull. Authorities are now cross-referencing dental records and have requested DNA testing of her seven year old son to match with the skull. The woman shared that she had been haunted by dreams of her missing husband, where he would visit their son and then run away towards a body of water and trees, only to disappear. These visions occurred just before the human skull was located, lending a chilling premonition to the case, reported KhaoSod. The police officer in charge, Lieutenant Sawai Srigaew, has stated that additional human parts were found and have been taken for a thorough examination, including DNA testing, to ascertain if they belong to the reported missing persons. The search for more evidence continues in earnest as the authorities intensify their efforts in the area where the remains were found. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-29 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. 18. Photo courtesy of Viral Press via Daily Mail In a heart-wrenching incident at the Vandapac factory in Chon Buri province on Wednesday, a routine day turned fatal when a robotic arm struck a worker, crushing him to death. The unsuspecting worker was going about his duties, laying out sheets of material, when tragedy struck most unexpectedly. Unsettling CCTV footage reveals the horrifying sequence of events, as the massive metal arm swung down, pinning the worker against a bench, while his colleague continued working, oblivious to the unfolding disaster behind him. Emergency responders raced against time, but their efforts were in vain as the victim succumbed to major trauma upon arrival at Chon Buri Hospital. Factory authorities shifted blame, citing the worker’s misjudgement, but questions loom over the safety protocols and accountability in such operations. They suggested he was aware of the robot arm’s capabilities and mistakenly manoeuvered beneath it, refusing to take responsibility for the incident. Revealing minimal details, a manager stated to local media: “We are not providing any more information. The employees accept responsibility for any accidents that happen while they are working.” Vandapac, a longstanding manufacturer specialising in plastic products for various industries, has operations spanning decades and employs over 1,800 individuals across its facilities in Samut Prakan province and the Amata City Chon Buri Industrial Estate. The shocking incident comes just months after another robot killed a worker in South Korea because it failed to differentiate him from a box of vegetables. That victim, a robotics company worker in his forties, was checking the machine’s sensor at a distribution centre for agricultural produce in South Gyeongsang during a routine inspection in November. But the machine, which was lifting boxes of peppers onto a pallet, grabbed the man with its arm and pushed him against the conveyor belt, crushing his face and chest. The robot malfunctioned and identified the man as a box, police sources said, reported UK Daily Mail. The victim was transferred to the hospital but died later, according to the South Korean Yonhap news agency. Police subsequently launched an investigation into the site’s safety managers for possible negligence in duties. An official from the Donggoseong Export Agricultural Complex, which owns the plant, called for a precise and safe system to be established in a statement after the incident. 640x360_MP4_2085373158026854487.mp4 by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Viral Press via Daily Mail Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-29 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. Thai woman loses 43 million baht business to ex-girlfriend by Petch Petpailin Petch Photo via Channel 7 A Thai woman accused her ex-girlfriend of conspiring with her husband to deceive her and seize control of her business and assets worth more than 43 million baht. 21. A Thai woman accused her ex-girlfriend of conspiring with her husband to deceive her and seize control of her business and assets worth more than 43 million baht. The businesswoman, Phattaranit “Tak” Suppadatepakun, urged Channel 7 to publish her story to the public and help her pursue justice after she went bankrupt due to her ex-girlfriend‘s actions. Tak revealed that she encountered her former girlfriend at a temple in 2021, and their interactions grew until they formed a relationship. The woman then invited Tak to reside with her at a welfare house located at Thong Lo Police Station in Bangkok, stating that her adoptive father served as an officer there. After a month of being together, Tak said that her ex-girlfriend’s behaviour changed, and she began physically abusing her. She assaulted Tak and later apologised, asking Tak to continue their relationship. Tak explained that she stayed because she loved the woman and wanted to build a family with her. According to Tak, her ex-girlfriend started interfering with her business in 2022. She assumed control of the company and prohibited Tak from contacting her employees. Eventually, she coerced Tak into transferring ownership of the company to her. Tak alleged that her ex-girlfriend transferred most of the company’s revenue to her supposed adoptive father, resulting in Tak losing about 10 million baht that year. Moreover, Tak was forced to transfer all her savings to her girlfriend’s alleged adoptive father under threat of physical assault. Suspicions Tak began to suspect the relationship between her ex-girlfriend and the adoptive father. The ex often refused to stay with her at the welfare house and expressed her desire to live with the police officer. Tak became suspicious of the relationship between her ex-girlfriend and the adoptive father when the ex began expressing a desire to stay with him more often. Tak later discovered that the adoptive father was her ex-girlfriend’s husband, and they had collaborated to deceive her and take over her business, losing more than 43 million baht in total. Tak stated that their operation was complicated, and several authorities, both police and soldiers, were involved in the scam, making her fear she might not receive justice and deciding to seek help from Channel 7. After sharing her story with the media, Tak received a mysterious phone call urging her to settle the matter without involving the media or police. However, she did not trust the person and intended to file a complaint with the Government Complaint Centre. by Petch Petpailin Petch Photo via Channel 7 Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-29 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. 24. A viral video circulating on Thai social media captured a foreign woman, evidently intoxicated, urinating on the footpath of Bangla Road in Phuket on March 26. This incident prompted criticism from netizens directed at both the foreign woman and the Thai government. A Thai man shared a video of the foreign woman on Facebook yesterday, March 27. The 56-second video shows the unidentified woman pulling down her panties and urinating near a sign pole. MGR Online reported that it was the Bangla Road sign pole in the Patong sub-district of Katu district in Phuket. The road is a well-known landmark in the province popular for its vibrant nightlife. A foreign man, believed to be her boyfriend, was also present and appeared to be drunk himself and unable to help his companion. Both Thais and foreigners passing by stared at the couple but they appear to be too drunk to care. The Thai man responsible for the video stated that the foreign couple were Japanese. Additionally, his tone conveyed a sense of irony. “Thailand! This is Thailand! Only good foreigners come to Patong, you see. This is Patong! So bad! Quality tourists! Government! Send us more of these tourists! Very good! Bangla don’t have bathroom. Authorities, please build one near Patong Beach!” Quality tourists Thai netizens expressed mixed reactions in the comment section. Many of them criticised the couple for their behaviour and cited potential fines for the act. Some found the video funny and did not cause any serious offence, while others complained to the authorities about the lack of public toilets. “Disgusting!” “There was not much public bathroom, and they are all closed at night. People don’t use bathroom at night?” “It’s good enough that she managed to take her pants off.” “The land of freedom.” “She must face a fine for this.” Many netizens debated the type of tourists Thailand should attract. They urged the government to focus more on quality tourists as crimes committed by foreigners continue to make headlines. “A lot of money comes from foreign tourists. Thai people need to be patient, right?” “Authorities should take action against this kind of foreign tourist. If only bad tourists come to Thailand, how can we attract good tourists to the country?” A Thai netizen criticised the man who filmed the video, citing damage to Phuket’s reputation. The netizen urged the videographer to decide between witnessing the disruption caused by foreign tourists or returning to the pandemic era, potentially risking their job. Thus far, officers from the Patong Police Station and other relevant departments have not stepped forward to address the issue or pursue legal action against the foreign woman. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ ศูนย์ข้อมูลภูเก็ต Phuket Info Center Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-29 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment.
