Thailand asks Korea to toughen K-ETA screening after denied entries of its people
Thailand asked Korea on Thursday to toughen the pre-entry screening process for foreign visitors from visa-waiver countries, after a number of its citizens were denied entry into Korea and the incidents stirred public ire. Thailand made the request to the Korean side during a director-general meeting on consular affairs between the foreign ministries, held earlier in the day, Seoul officials said. A number of Thais revealed through some online channels last year their experiences of having been denied the entry into Korea even though they had obtained the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) approval prior to their departure. The postings quickly circulated via social media and caused discontent among the Thai people. A tougher screening process for the K-ETA approval will allow Korea to prevent ineligible travelers from entering and reduce the risks of foreigners being denied entry upon arrival, the ministry quoted the Thai officials as saying at the meeting. British woman rescued after falling from Koh Samui waterfall
Rescue teams and administrative officers yesterday successfully saved a British woman who fell from the Hin Lad Waterfall on Koh Samui island in the southern province of Surat Thani. The 46 year old British woman, Hema Mantra, sought help from the Koh Samui District Office after slipping and collapsing at the waterfall. She informed officers that she felt pain in her right leg. Due to the injury, she was unable to leave the waterfall and make her way to the hospital since it was situated on the mountain. Rescuers made the long trek to the waterfall with medical equipment and spent about an hour to reach Mantra. Rescuers checked on her injured leg and found that her right ankle was broken. They carefully carried Mantra down the mountain on a stretcher. The rescue teams faced challenges on the narrow, steep, and dark walkway during the mission. It took them over two hours to get down the mountain where Mantra was promptly transferred to Wattanapat Hospital. DailyNews reported that Mantra is now in a stable condition. A similar accident involving a British national and a waterfall on Koh Samui was reported in 2022. The British man reportedly ignored a warning sign at Na Mueang Waterfall and climbed to the top of it before falling off. Fortunately, the fall was not fatal, and authorities successfully rescued him. Another accident at Na Mueang Waterfall was reported in December last year. In this tragic incident, a 20 year old French tourist lost his life after slipping from the waterfall. Authorities disclosed that the Frenchman also violated warnings by entering the dangerous area. Authorities reported that several accidents have taken place at the Na Mueang Waterfall before, especially in the prohibited area with a warning sign. Another fatal accident was reported in January this year when a Chinese man died after falling from a 10-metre-high waterfall in the northern province of Mae Hong Son. by Petch Petpailin Top Photo by DOPA Samui via DailyNews Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai wildfires rage across 10 provinces in northern Thailand
An apocalyptic blaze threatens to engulf vast swathes of the northern Thai landscape, with an estimated 1 million rai (equivalent to 160,000 hectares) poised to succumb to wildfires between February 19 and 25, as revealed by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA). The inferno’s ominous reach spans 10 provinces including Tak, Lampang, Chiang Mai, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, and Kamphaeng Phet. GISTDA investigators point the finger at local practices, citing that the conflagration is often ignited deliberately by farmers engaging in pre-planting or post-harvest burns. Most concerning is the incineration of conserved areas within national parks and agricultural zones. The agency vows to combat the blazes with rigorous measures. Utilising satellite technology, GISTDA reports a staggering 1,532 hot spots nationwide, with 671 menacing conserved wildlife areas, 340 encroaching upon national reserved forests, and 232 threatening agricultural lands. Shockingly, even lands allocated under Sor Por Kor (a scheme granting Ministry of Agriculture land to locals) aren’t spared, with 163 sites ablaze. Kanchanaburi emerges as the epicentre of this fiery crisis, boasting a disturbing 221 hot spots alone, reported The Nation. The regional panorama paints a grim picture, with Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam collectively grappling with over 4,700 hot spots, underscoring the dire magnitude of the situation. In related news, a wildfire ravaged nearly 100 acres of the Samet Forest in Trat province from January 31 through February 1, with suspicions that locals secretly set the fire to forage for forest products. Despite the efforts of firefighting teams, the blaze remains uncontained and there are concerns it could spread to an adjacent 2,000-acre forest. Thai authorities monitored the situation closely, including the safety of a nearby teachers’ residence, and have adjusted their firefighting strategy to counter the spreading flames. In other news, more than 250 firefighters from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) have been deployed to the western forest complex to combat raging fires. With a whopping 1,600 hectares of forest already devastated, these brave souls are working tirelessly to prevent further destruction. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of The Nation Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Delivery rider helps himself to water dispenser in Thai restaurant
A delivery rider sparked an outcry on social media after being captured filling his cup with water from a restaurant’s dispenser without permission. The incident, which quickly became a hot topic online, began when an individual posted an image and message on the LINE Man Rider Thailand Facebook group. The post highlighted a delivery rider who was seen filling up their cup directly from a water dispenser inside a restaurant, without seeking consent from the staff. The caption expressed disbelief at the rider’s audacity to help themselves to the water in such a manner, mentioning that even when the staff voiced their disapproval, the rider continued undeterred. Following the post, over 1,200 comments flooded in, with the majority criticizing the rider’s inappropriate behaviour and expressing concerns about the potential negative impact this could have on other delivery riders. The fear is that such actions might lead to stricter measures being imposed on all riders by the establishments they visit. Among the numerous comments, one stood out, urging riders to be aware of their actions and maintain their image, highlighting that legal action could be taken against such behaviour, reported KhaoSod. The broader implications of the incident have caused a stir among netizens, who are calling on delivery riders to uphold a certain standard of professionalism to protect both their own and their colleagues’ reputations. As the conversation gains momentum, there is a collective appeal for individuals within the service industry to conduct themselves respectfully, especially when operating within the premises of other businesses. In related news, a Thai delivery rider dodged a drug charge after a dealer tricked him into transporting crystal meth and ecstasy by claiming the parcel was a watch. The 38 year old delivery rider reported the discovery of the drugs to Hua Mark Police Station on January 31 at about 10.45pm. He reported to officers that he was hired by a Thai man to deliver a watch to a recipient at the Maitria Hotel in the Rama 9 district of Bangkok but found that the parcel was packed with drugs instead of the watch. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Serial rapist remains at large after assaulting boys in Rayong
Residents in the eastern province of Rayong condemned police for failing to arrest a serial rapist who repeatedly assaulted more than 10 boys in the province for years. Social media influencer Guntouch “Gun” Pongpaiboonwet, yesterday, February 22, accompanied two Thai boys, aged 11 and 14 years old, to Mueang Rayong Police Station to file a complaint against the rapist named Non. Gun revealed that one of the victims had been sexually assaulted for more than two years, and Non managed to evade arrest and lived in Rayong for more than 10 years. One victim said that Non approached him when he was in a public park in the community and lured him to his house to sexually assault him. Another victim said Non took a picture of him when he was late for school or skipped class, and threatened to tell his parents if he refused sex. Gun revealed that more than 10 boys fell victim to Non. He would trick them into going to his house, threaten them with a knife and rape them. Non also took videos or pictures of the assault to blackmail the victim into having sex with him. According to Gun, most of the victims knew each other but had never revealed the sexual assaults to their friends out of embarrassment. The crime came to light when one of the victims told his parents. Upon discovering the series of assaults, the residents grew incensed and pursued Non relentlessly. Eventually, they apprehended him and subjected him to physical violence before handing him over to the authorities. Non was subsequently handcuffed by the officers and transported to the hospital due to injuries sustained from the ordeal, yet he somehow managed to evade capture. Police blamed The residents expressed outrage at the police’s negligence. They informed Naewna that they had apprehended the serial rapist themselves, only for the police to release him. According to them, while at the hospital, the police inquired of Non whether he intended to flee if they removed his handcuffs. Non assured them he wouldn’t, yet he absconded from the hospital during treatment. Concerns arose among residents that Non might revisit harm his previous victims or their parents, who had lodged complaints against him. Furthermore, there was apprehension that Non might relocate to other provinces to perpetrate further crimes. Non’s friend told Channel 7 that Non worked as an assistant cook at a restaurant in the province. He saw that Non liked to play with children but did not think that he would commit this type of crime. The friend said he asked Non about the rape after he was caught, and Non admitted to the sexual assault and confessed that he did it more than 10 times. The Superintendent of Mueng Rayong Police Station, Weepong Kongkaew, defended his subordinates, saying police were unable to arrest Non at the time because no warrant was issued. Weepong said officers would question each victim on February 27 and issue an arrest warrant for Non after gathering enough evidence. Gun urged other victims to file complaints with the police so that Non could be properly punished for his disturbing behaviour. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ กันจอมพลัง ช่วยสู้ and Twitter/ Red Skull Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Khon Kaen Zoo celebrates first successful black swan breeding
Khon Kaen Zoo proudly announced the successful breeding of black swans, marking a first in the zoo’s history. The arrival of three cygnets, hatched in early February, comes as a delightful surprise to zoo officials and animal lovers alike. Thipawadee Kittikhun, the acting director-general at the zoo, revealed that three eggs were laid by a seven year old swan in December, which hatched between February 9 and 10. “The cygnets are under the vigilant supervision of our veterinarians. Their health and growth are our top priority.” Providing a nutritious diet, the young swans are fed with a mix of finely chopped vegetables and swamp algae. This diet is rich in protein, calcium, and phosphorus, vital for bone strengthening. Black swans, distinguishable by their red bills, are native to the wetlands of southwestern and eastern Australia. They typically reach their breeding age around two years old. The parent swans, who were relocated from a regional private zoo to Khon Kaen in 2020, have adapted well to their new home. Their successful breeding is seen as a testament to the zoo’s dedicated animal care, reported Bangkok Post. In anticipation of the cygnets’ growth, preparations are underway to move them to a larger aviary soon, according to Kittikhun. This successful breeding initiative at Khon Kaen Zoo not only adds to its diverse wildlife but also contributes to the conservation efforts of these beautiful creatures. In related news, in a historic moment at the Wetland and Thai Crane Learning Centre in Buriram province, Police Lieutenant General Phatcharavat Wongsuwan spearheaded a ceremony to release Eastern Sarus cranes back into the wild. The event, attended by Aut Arunrattanapong, Head of Regional Management Division 1, True Corporation, and Rommuk Piachan, Senior Leader, Projects Development, TruePlookpanya, marked the 12th successful release of the majestic creatures, further bolstering their population to over 168 in the wild. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Calls for government subsidy on all Bangkok public transport
A call for government subsidisation of all public transportation in Bangkok was made at a forum aiming to alleviate the city’s commuting issues. The event, attended by approximately 100 individuals including locals, was a collaboration between the House committee on consumer protection, the Thailand Consumers Council and the Foundation for Consumers. The agenda was to gather consumer perspectives on the capital city’s public transport and potential improvements. According to the attendees, primarily consisting of Bangkok residents and those from its adjacent suburbs, commuting via public transport in the metropolis often proves to be a hassle, reported Bangkok Post. Bhuntin Noumjerm, a Bangkok representative of the Move Forward Party and the committee’s spokesperson, pointed out the substandard quality of transportation services in the city. He noted the high fares as a significant concern. Bhuntin suggested that the government should contemplate subsidising all modes of transport in the capital, not just the electric rail systems, which currently dominate the transport scene. Bhuntin highlighted the lack of accessible, cost-effective transport services connecting residential back roads and alleyways to electric train stations. He assured that these shared viewpoints would be compiled and presented to the House of Representatives during the forthcoming deliberation of public transport bills. Aphisit Mantri, who manages the Rotmaethai (Thai public buses) Facebook page, noted the scarcity of operational vehicles, especially during the night, as a common hurdle for commuters. Extended waiting times are a frequent outcome of this issue, Aphisit explained. He also mentioned passenger complaints regarding seemingly arbitrary alterations to the numbering of certain bus routes. Most commuters are perplexed by these changes, as they disrupt a numbering system that was previously familiar to all, Aphisit added. Assistant Secretary to the TCC’s sub-committee on transport, Khongsak Chuenkrailat, emphasized the necessity of maintaining affordable fares for the entirety of the population. He underlined this as a key step towards ensuring a convenient and beneficial public transport system in Bangkok. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of iStock Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thailand’s ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra paroled raising legal questions
Convicted former Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, has been granted parole in compliance with legal criteria, according to Police Colonel Tawee Sodsong, the Justice Minister. This comes following Thaskin’s return to Thailand last year, during which he did not serve any jail time. This development sparked questions from Nattacha Boonchaiinsawat, a Bangkok MP for the Move Forward Party (MFP), during a parliamentary session. Nattacha queried how Thaskin qualified for parole under the Corrections Act or the Department of Corrections (DoC) regulations, reported Bangkok Post. He referred to a DoC regulation which states that for inmates to be eligible for parole, they must be either seriously ill or over 70 years old and incapable of adequately caring for themselves. This includes dependency on others for daily activities such as eating, moving around, or maintaining personal hygiene, as well as a lack of control over bowel movements. “How does Thaksin fit this condition?” Nattacha questioned, seeking further information about the two doctors who certified Thaksin as seriously ill but subsequently recovered within 180 days. In response, Pol. Col. Tawee cited the National Health Act, which safeguards individuals’ health-related data confidentiality, preventing its disclosure without the individual’s consent. “The doctors who diagnosed Thaksin’s conditions are from the Police General Hospital [where he was detained]. His parole was in line with the law and related regulations and doctors’ criteria,” he stated. Meanwhile, the opposition Democrat Party voiced that it wouldn’t bring up the issue in the forthcoming censure debate as it doesn’t pertain to the government’s performance. Rather, Deputy Leader Chaichana Detdecho highlighted that crucial economic issues, such as the stalled digital wallet scheme, are of greater relevance. “Thaksin has returned home and been reunited with his family. The issue has come to an end. The concern now is the justice system. The public wonders if there are double standards. I would like to ask the director-general of the Department of Corrections to give a clear answer,” Chaichana said. Chaichana indicated that the party anticipates a censure debate to occur before the House session concludes in April. He also mentioned that the topics of discussion would include the digital wallet scheme, government’s policies to increase minimum daily wages and salaries of graduates which have not been implemented yet. by Mitch Connor Photo by Wason Wanichakorn via AP Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thailand braces for severe summer storms across 46 provinces
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a severe weather warning as a summer storm is expected to hit 46 provinces, including Bangkok and its vicinity, from February 24 to 26. The alert made early on February 23, warns of thunderstorms, hail, and potential lightning strikes due to a high-pressure system from China meeting with a moist easterly and southeasterly wind flow over Thailand. With a collision of a high-pressure system from China and a moist southern airflow, Thailand is bracing for severe summer storms. The Thai Meteorological Department forecasts strong winds, hail, and thunderstorms across large parts of the country as winter bids farewell. The public is urged to take precautions, especially avoiding open areas, weak structures, and large trees. Farmers should also prepare to protect their crops and livestock during the tumultuous weather expected from February 24 to February 26, reported KhaoSod. The high-pressure system extending from China is set to cover the northeastern region and the South China Sea. Concurrently, several regions of upper Thailand are experiencing heat, which when combined with the moisture-laden winds from the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea, creates ideal conditions for summer storms. These storms are expected to bring gusty winds and hail in some areas, as well as lightning strikes. The Thai Meteorological Department’s warning details potential impacts on specific dates February 24 The affected areas will include lower northern provinces such as Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun; northeastern provinces including Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani; and eastern provinces like Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, and Sa Kaeo.
