Up in smoke: Royal Thai Police extinguish counterfeit cigarette ring
A major counterfeit cigarette network, known as Jae Pen Fang Thon, has been dismantled by the Royal Thai Police and the Department of Excise. The operation led to the arrest of 55 year old Tawan, and the seizure of an extensive cache of contraband, resulting in an estimated loss of 45 million baht to the state. The operation took place at 11am today, at the Pracha Araksa Building. Among the officials involved were Sophon Saraphat, deputy chief of the police, and Ekaniti Nititatprapha, Director-General of the Excise Department. The items confiscated from Tawan included 4,881 cartons of various brands of counterfeit cigarettes, equating to 48,810 packets, alongside a Toyota Fortuner and a closed van. The arrest was made at the Thai Post office in Thap Thai, Pong Nam Ron district, Chanthaburi province. The crackdown followed the arrest of the Jae Pen counterfeit cigarette network, which is a major player in the Thonburi district. The operation yielded 40 crates of foreign cigarettes, approximately 20,973 packets. Investigations revealed these counterfeit cigarettes were smuggled into the country from neighbouring nations before being sorted into postal boxes. This made them resemble regular parcels, allowing for distribution to customers via private transport to avoid inspection. by Nattapong Westwood PHOTO: via The independent Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Phayam Island children’s struggle to school spurs calls for new bridge
Children in Phayam Island in the Ranong province have been struggling to reach their schools due to the lack of a bridge. An online post appealing for help has sparked a call for government intervention, suggesting that before the economic bridge is built, these children need assistance. Monsoongarbage Thailand a Facebook page, shared the plight of the schoolchildren. “Can we gift them a bridge for Children’s Day? Can we pay attention to this issue? When the tide rises, they have to ride a boat to school, but when the tide falls, they need to wade through water to return home because boats cannot operate.” The post also urged the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to build a bridge for these children to cross over to their school before considering constructing a land bridge or an economic bridge project connecting Ranong and Chumphon provinces for foreign investors. by Nattapong Westwood PHOTO: via India Today Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai Tiktokers slam Indian artists’ song as racist, sexist, insulting toward Thailand (video)
Thai TikTokers slammed a song by some Indian artists, calling it racist, sexist and insulting toward Thai men and women. The Song, Bang Bang Bangkok, performed by Indian artists Ranina Reddy, Rita, and Devi Sri Prasad, serves as the movie soundtrack to the 2015 Indian rom-com Kumari 21F. Despite its release year, the song has just gained popularity on the TikTok application recently. The main lyrics in question are… “Same same but different. No money, no honey. Good boy go to heaven, bad boy go to Bangkok.” Thai TikTok users flooded the comment section of videos featuring the song, expressing their dissatisfaction. They argued that the phrase “same same but different” ridicules the way Thai people speak English, possibly referencing interactions between Thai vendors and foreign customers discussing product variations. The lyrics “no money, no honey” were interpreted as an offensive stereotype, suggesting Thai women only date foreigners for money. Some users even linked this to the context of sex work, particularly in tourist hotspots like Pattaya, which was featured as the background of the music video. by Petch Petpailin Photo via YouTube/ Sukumar Writings Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai student protest erupts over unsatisfactory school meals
A student protest recently erupted in a school located in Mae La Noi, Mae Hong Son. The students rallied against the school’s director, barring entry into the school premises by locking all entrances. The protest was a response to the director’s decision to lodge a police complaint against a student who posted pictures of the school’s unsatisfactory midday meal consisting of plain rice, a single boiled egg, and a small packet of red-eye chilli dip at 8.30am on today. The previous day at 6pm, the school director lodged a complaint about the student who posted the image of the meagre meal at the local police station. The complaint was lodged with Inspector Panuphan Chanthachom, an investigator at Mae La Noi Police Station, under the Computer Crime Act. At 7pm that same day, students from the school collectively went to Mae La Noi Police Station to protest against the director. by Nattapong Westwood PHOTO: via The Bucknellian Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
