  5. The Thai cyanide serial killer lost her baby last week during imprisonment in the Central Women’s Correction Institution. The killer, Sararat “Am” Rangsiwuthaporn, reportedly displayed no signs of emotion or disappointment. Sararat’s lawyer is preparing to take legal action against the Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police (RTP), Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, and his team for putting too much pressure on her, which they believe resulted in the miscarriage. The Director of the Central Women Correction Institution, Soraya Ritthiaram, revealed on June 23 that Sararat’s miscarriage occurred a few days ago due to toxaemia of pregnancy – a complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organ systems, such as the liver or kidneys. At the time of the miscarriage, she was six months pregnant. According to Soraya, Sararat sensed that her unborn child’s pulse had ceased and reported it to the prison guard. She was taken to the Police General Hospital immediately. A doctor diagnosed her with toxaemia resulting from hypertension, ultimately leading to the loss of her baby. Following medical treatment, Sararat was transferred back to prison and was placed in the nursing room for two days until her condition improved. 14. Recent investigations reveal that many British tourists have violated Thai immigration laws over the past five years by overstaying their visas. These incidents have caused concern and stimulated debate about the consequences of such violations on local communities. Thailand, renowned for its vibrant culture and thriving tourism, draws millions of global visitors annually. However, a small subset has been implicated in overstay crimes, involving various illicit activities. Overstay crimes, which entail illegal acts by individuals overstaying their visit, span numerous illicit operations, from drug trafficking to potential ties with criminal syndicates. Several British nationals have been implicated in these visa overstay-related cases in Thailand. Thai authorities, in cooperation with international law enforcement, have introduced stringent measures to monitor visa durations and identify those in the country unlawfully. These efforts aim to curb illegal activities and safeguard both locals and tourists. The involvement of British nationals in these crimes underlines the importance of all visitors respecting visa protocols. Overstaying not only endangers personal safety but also tarnishes the reputation of one's home country. In conclusion, British nationals' participation in Thai overstay crimes highlights the necessity of adhering to visa regulations. 17. Monsoon surge raises flood risk across Thailand: 47 provinces on high alert By Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of Brazil Topno, Unsplash Swelling rainfall across Thailand, spurred by the increasing strength of a monsoon coupled with an area of low atmospheric pressure, has compelled the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) to warn that 47 provinces could face potentially hazardous situations. Over the next 24 hours, it predicts 60% of their areas will face heavy rain, with the severity being the most significant in the northern and northeastern regions of the country. 18. Swelling rainfall across Thailand, spurred by the increasing strength of a monsoon coupled with an area of low atmospheric pressure, has compelled the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) to warn that 47 provinces could face potentially hazardous situations. Over the next 24 hours, it predicts 60% of their areas will face heavy rain, with the severity being the most significant in the northern and northeastern regions of the country. Meteorologists at the TMD have attributed this increase in rainfall to the interaction of a trough of the southwestern monsoon as it crosses Myanmar and enters the northern region of Thailand, toward a pocket of low atmospheric pressure in Laos and North Vietnam. This system is underpinned by a southwestern monsoon, which intensifies over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. The TMD cautioned that these phenomena, once converged over Thailand, will lead to higher rainfall and heavier showers in some parts of the country notably in the east. Altitudes in the north and northeast of the country are projected to experience intense rain and accumulated rainfall. This has the potential to cause sudden floods and forest runoff. People in these regions, particularly near uphill areas, waterways, and lower plains are urged to be cautious of potential dangers. In the upper Andaman Sea, waves are expected to be 1 to 2 metres high and in areas with stormy weather, waves may rise above 2 metres. Fishermen are asked to navigate boats with caution and avoid regions with thunderstorms entirely. Weather forecasts for Thailand from 6am today until 6am tomorrow show that the northern region will experience thunderstorms with 70% of the area affected, with heavy to very heavy rain in some parts, particularly in the provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phrae, and Nan. Minimum temperatures range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius, with maximum temperatures of 32 to 35 degrees. Southeasterly winds will be blowing at a speed of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour. Fitch ratings reveal Thailand’s economic recovery to boost corporate earnings in 2023 By Alex Morgan Photo Courtesy of Freepik Recovery of the domestic economy and alleviation of inflationary pressures are set to bolster the performance of corporations in Thailand this year, suggest analysts from Fitch Ratings during the 2023 Thailand Corporate Credit Outlook & Asean ESG conference, held recently in Bangkok. 23. Recovery of the domestic economy and alleviation of inflationary pressures are set to bolster the performance of corporations in Thailand this year, suggest analysts from Fitch Ratings during the 2023 Thailand Corporate Credit Outlook & Asean ESG conference, held recently in Bangkok. Corporates at Fitch Ratings (Thailand)’s Lertchai Kochareonrattanakul, a senior director, indicated in his talk that a boost in local consumer demand coupled with a resurgence in activities related to tourism should foster continuous earnings growth for Fitch-rated firms in food and beverage, telecom, aviation, and hospitality verticals. While earnings are pegged to enhance for the power and utility sectors, which previously felt the burn of high fuel expenses in 2022, expectations predict an ease in cost pressures. The recovery journey for petrochemical businesses may face hurdles due to softening international demand, escalated cost of raw materials and energy, and new supply that could potentially shrink petrochemical profit margins. A prediction by Fitch anticipates oil and gas firms to experience a plateau in earnings from a previous peak but should still remain comparatively elevated. 24. The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has shown to the media a system to release treated and diluted water from the facility into the ocean. Tokyo Electric Power Company completed the construction of the system on Monday. It has been building it since last August. A gigantic pipe for diluting treated water with a massive amount of seawater has been installed in front of the No.5 and the No.6 reactors. It is about seven meters long and around two meters in diameter. The diameter of the seawater pipe is nine times that for a pipe for treated water. An emergency shut-off valve on the system automatically stops the flow of the liquid if the flow rate does not match prescribed rates or concentrations of radioactive materials are above-permitted levels.
