  1. Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, left, and his daughter and newly elected Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra arrive before the royal endorsement ceremony appointing Paetongtarn as Thailand's new prime minister at Pheu Thai party headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit). Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was officially endorsed as Thailand's 31st Prime Minister on August 18 by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. This momentous occasion took place at a privately-owned hall on Vibhavadi Road, marking Paetongtarn's formal entry into the nation's highest office. The 38-year-old Prime Minister also serves as the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, which is the main force within the current coalition government. Her rise to power follows the recent majority vote by coalition MPs, securing her position as head of the government. Paetongtarn succeeds Srettha Thavisin, who was recently impeached and removed from office by the Constitutional Court due to violations of the constitution and political ethics. Her new administration will feature many ministers from the previous cabinet, ensuring continuity in governance. Under the leadership of Paetongtarn, the Pheu Thai Party, with its 141 MPs, will hold 16 ministerial positions, including that of the Prime Minister. The coalition structure includes the Bhumjaithai Party with 70 MPs, holding eight cabinet seats; the Palang Pracharath Party with 40 MPs, and the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party with 36 MPs, each holding four cabinet seats. Additionally, the Chart Thai Pattana Party with 10 MPs and the Prachachart Party with nine MPs will each secure one cabinet seat. Thaksin Shinawatra, despite not holding an official position, is expected to play a significant role behind the scenes in shaping the new cabinet and distributing ministerial positions among the coalition partners, similar to his influence in the previous administration. Paetongtarn's entry into politics is relatively recent; she had no prior political experience before being named one of the Pheu Thai Party's candidates for last year's general election. Unlike many of her predecessors, she has never served as an MP, held any government position, or even been an official member of her father's party until last year. As Paetongtarn takes the helm, Thailand looks to the future with cautious optimism, observing how this fresh leadership will navigate the nation's political landscape. -- 2024-08-19 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 3. The resignation of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is set to have wide-ranging impacts, while the incoming Paetongtarn Shinawatra administration may find the more liberal immigration and visa policies quite challenging to implement. EDITORIAL By Pattaya Mai The shock resignation of prime minister Srettha Thavisin is bound to reverberate in all sorts of directions. But it’s virtually certain that the new Pheu Thai-led administration will get round to immigration and visas sooner rather than later. Mr Thavisin’s vision was to expand massively the entry and extension opportunities for visa-exempt tourists, whilst creating a new visa for long-stayers with a lawful activity in mind. But the foreign affairs ministry, which pushed through the changes in Cabinet, may have bitten off more than the new government can chew. The latest rule allows visa-exempt tourists to receive 60 days on arrival with a 30 days’ extension at local immigration. Nothing in print prevents these tourists from leaving the country – for example on a border hop – and repeating the procedure indefinitely. That would mean a permanent leave to remain in Thailand, without any visa, simply by briefly leaving the country – even for an hour or two – four times a year. No need to show any paperwork of any kind. When challenged about multiple admissions, the foreign affairs ministry spokesman said that, of course, all entries to Thailand were subject to the discretion of the immigration officer. In other words, you would never be sure what might happen further down the line. One tourist might be refused, whilst another might be hassle-free, a scenario which would create the bad publicity which the Thai government abhors. The obvious solution is for the incoming Thai government to limit entries under the visa-exempt scheme to one or two in any twelve months’ period. 6. Picture courtesy: Thai Rath The trial of Swiss expat Urs Fehr, often referred to as ‘Swiss David,’ is scheduled to conclude on September 3rd. Fehr, the founder of the Green Elephant Sanctuary Park in Cherng Talay, faces an assault charge stemming from a February incident in which he allegedly kicked Dr. Thandao Chandam, a Dibuk Hospital doctor, outside his rented luxury villa in Pa Khlok. In February, Dr. Thandao and a friend were sitting on steps leading to Yamu Beach, watching the full moon, when Fehr reportedly approached them, demanded they leave, and allegedly kicked Dr. Thandao in the back. Fehr, however, claims he slipped while approaching the pair. A widely circulated video of the incident sparked anti-foreigner sentiment among locals, leading to a protest at the beach near Fehr’s residence, reported The Phuket News. Subsequent investigations revealed that the steps leading to the beach were illegally constructed on public land and were later demolished. Officials clarified that Fehr and his wife mistakenly believed their property rights included the steps. Despite an initial March announcement from the Immigration Bureau revoking Fehr’s residence permit, he has remained in Phuket, awaiting legal proceedings. Anuphong Panarat, Secretary to the Governor of Phuket, confirmed Fehr’s continued presence, noting that he is allowed to stay due to the ongoing legal case. "Mr. Fehr remains in the country to face the assault charge. He has not engaged in any business activities during this time," Anuphong stated. Dr. Thandao expressed relief that the case is nearing resolution. "The trial concludes on September 3rd, and appropriate sentencing will follow," said Dr. Thandao. Fehr has been granted recurring 30-day stays under bail conditions, which include residing in approved housing, bi-weekly check-ins with authorities, and refraining from work or illegal activities. "The case is ongoing, but justice is expected to be served soon," Dr. Thandao concluded, thanking the Phuket community and local media for their support. 8. The ruling Pheu Thai Party has announced that the new Cabinet will be introduced within three weeks. Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed this yesterday, following parliament’s vote for the new premier. Newly installed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will have the legal right and duty to make political decisions and hold discussions. Phumtham emphasised that the allocation of ministerial positions will not adhere to the previous quota system, as the former administration has concluded. “There won’t be any old quotas. When the previous government ends, it’s up to the new premier to discuss and negotiate with all the party leaders. “I believe the current situation will encourage everyone to think collectively, and the new prime minister will have to talk with coalition partners to determine what is still appropriate in the current context.” Phumtham clarified that the ministerial reshuffle is not a complete overhaul. Paetongtarn, as the new premier, will require time to discuss the matter with all coalition partners. Sorawong Thienthong, secretary-general of Pheu Thai, stated that the timeline to form a new Cabinet should be within three weeks of Paetongtarn receiving royal endorsement. Following this, she can form a new Cabinet and submit the list of names for royal endorsement. The new leader will then present the government’s policies to the House, as mandated by the constitution, within 15 days of the oath-taking date. Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, head of the Bhumjaithai Party, mentioned that his party has already informed the coalition leader that there will be no proposed changes to their current ministerial positions—four ministerial positions and four deputy ministerial positions. “Everything should remain the same, and the party has proposed its deputy leader Paradorn Prissanananthaku for consideration as first Deputy House Speaker.” Anutin also pointed out that Paetongtarn has served as Pheu Thai leader throughout the last government and has had opportunities to work with all coalition partners. Meanwhile, Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, expressed that the TCC will collaborate with the new government to explore ways to implement economic stimulus measures and provide relief to the public, reported Bangkok Post. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of CNN Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-17 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. The operation took place on Highway 299, kilometres 19-20, in Phai subdistrict, Mueang district, Kalasin province. The convoy, consisting of Hino trucks, was travelling from Somdet district towards Kalasin province when officers flagged them down for inspection due to suspicions about the contents. Upon inspection, police discovered that the trucks were tightly packed with various items imported from China. Customs officials were called in to assist with the examination. The initial investigation revealed that the cargo included electrical appliances without the required Thai Industrial Standards (TIS) certification, counterfeit goods, hazardous materials, foreign liquor and cigarettes, and automobile accessories and electronics. In total, 846 items worth 20 million baht were confiscated. The drivers, identified as Montree, Pongsakorn, and Chanapol (last names withheld), were interrogated following the discovery. They revealed that they had picked up the goods from the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge and were instructed to deliver them to a warehouse in a central province. The drivers stated they were paid per trip and had no relevant documentation for the cargo provided by their employer. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-17 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. The 37-year-old daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was voted in with 319 votes in favor, 145 against, and 27 abstentions, making her the 31st and second female prime minister of Thailand. By Pattaya Mail International media reports have highlighted the challenges facing Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thailand’s youngest-ever prime minister, after being elected by parliament on August 16. The 37-year-old daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was voted in with 319 votes in favor, 145 against, and 27 abstentions, making her the 31st and second female prime minister of Thailand. She is also the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold this position. According to Reuters, despite Paetongtarn’s relatively easy victory in the vote, her lack of political experience means she faces a ‘baptism of fire’ as she takes over from former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who was ousted by the Constitutional Court just two days earlier. Paetongtarn’s entry into politics carries the weight of the Shinawatra legacy, especially after Thaksin-affiliated political parties lost the general election for the first time in 20 years last year, forcing them to make deals with military-backed rivals. Paetongtarn has never held any governmental position before and is expected to face numerous challenges, including reviving Thailand’s struggling economy and addressing the declining popularity of her Pheu Thai Party. Additionally, she will need to push forward the party’s flagship policy of distributing 10,000-baht digital wallets, a program requiring a massive budget of 500 billion baht. 16. With Paetongtarn Shinawatra, elected as Thailand's prime minister during Friday’s special House session on 16 August, much attention has turned to her spouse, Pitaka Suksawat. Pitaka earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. His career initially soared with him working as a pilot for a prominent airline. However, he decided to leave his aviation career behind following his marriage to Paetongtarn in 2019. Currently, Pitaka serves as Deputy Chief Investment Officer at Rende Development Co., Ltd., where he oversees investment operations in both domestic and international markets. His role places him at the intersection of high-stakes investment strategies, shaping the financial landscape within and beyond Thailand. The story of Paetongtarn and Pitaka's relationship begins with a mutual introduction by friends while they were both enrolled in a special academic programme. Their relationship blossomed over two years before they began dating. Within a year, Pitaka proposed, and the couple tied the knot on March 17, 2019. They now have two children, a daughter and a son, whose presence underscores their commitment to balancing high-profile careers with family life. The pair’s emerging influence within Thailand’s socio-political and economic spheres is particularly notable. Paetongtarn’s rise to premiership casts a spotlight on their united vision for the future, blending political strategies with robust investment acumen, embodied by Pitaka. As Thailand embraces its new leadership, all eyes are certainly on how this dynamic couple will navigate their roles, balancing political fervour with financial expertise. 18. The future of the Pheu Thai Party and the Shinawatra family is at stake as they strive to avoid repeating past mistakes and potential exile from Thailand. After several political upheavals, Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been elected as Thailand’s 31st prime minister. The political landscape remains unsettled following the Constitutional Court’s ruling to dissolve the Move Forward Party, leading to a rebranding as the People’s Party. Recently, the Constitutional Court ordered Srettha Thavisin to step down as prime minister due to ethical violations, prompting further legal challenges. Srettha faces additional scrutiny from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), reported Daily News. These developments have led to significant shifts in the government, with Thaksin Shinawatra, the influential figure behind Pheu Thai, calling for a meeting with coalition partners. Thaksin announced the cancellation of the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, Pheu Thai’s flagship policy, due to economic concerns. With Paetongtarn now in power, attention shifts to forming a new Cabinet and potential reshuffles within key parties like Palang Pracharath and Ruam Thai Sang Chart. The upcoming policy announcement on August 28th will set the stage for Paetongtarn’s administration. Paetongtarn now faces the challenge of leading the country, guided by her father, Thaksin. The 2026 general election will be crucial, with the newly formed People’s Party emerging as a major competitor. Paetongtarn, now aligned with conservatives, must find a way to counter the “Orange Camp” representing younger voters. During her heartfelt speech, Paetongtarn expressed thanks to everyone who voted for her, pledging that she and her team would work tirelessly to fulfill their duties. She also acknowledged the efforts of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, promising to continue working for the Thai people. Srettha was dismissed on Wednesday following a Constitutional Court ruling that he had breached ethics rules in a Cabinet appointment. Touching on her future plans, Paetongtarn said she would wait for the royal endorsement before discussing specific policies. In a lighter moment, she shared a FaceTime call with her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who encouraged her to work hard. Addressing the expectations and pressures of her new role, Paetongtarn emphasized the strength of her team and her clear drive. She declined to comment on potential ministerial positions until after receiving the royal endorsement. Despite expressing disappointment over the recent Constitutional Court ruling that led to Srettha's dismissal, Paetongtarn vowed to move forward for the country and her party. Paetongtarn concluded by reaffirming her commitment to serving Thailand, stating, “I will do my best every day. We face many challenges, but I am confident we can overcome them.” -- 2024-08-17 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million.
