Pita’s election as PM and political certainty would be a green light for new jobs and investment
Pheu Thai nominee for PM, Srettha Thavisin, was speaking on Wednesday at an investors conference in Bangkok at which he insisted on looking at the current political situation in a positive light, saying that its resolution in the form of political certainty and a government led by Move Forward’s Pita Limjaroenrat would be a green light for a return of inward financial investment and new jobs created by foreign firms. Business tycoon turned politician, Srettha Thavisin, briefed investors in Bangkok about the current political situation as capital and investment flow out of the kingdom due to rising political uncertainty as the May 14th General Election result becomes embroiled in controversy due to the extremely onerous nature and complexity of the country’s electoral system. Pheu Thai Party Prime Ministerial nominee, Srettha Thavisin, this week tried to sound positive about the current anxiety sweeping the business sector over the murky political situation and growing doubts about the May 14th General Election result. Mr Srettha said he was confident that if a government led by Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat is installed in August, it would lead to a return of investment and capital to Thailand as money continues to flow out of the kingdom. Key Pheu Thai Party leader Srettha Thavisin, a former property tycoon and business empire builder, on Wednesday, told reporters that he was aware of international business enterprises that would like to move plants and production to Thailand but are put off, for now, by the delay, in the aftermath of the May 14th General Election, in clarity emerging as to the nature and substance of Thailand’s next government which is expected to be elected by parliament in August. by Joseph O' Connor Full story: https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2023/06/17/pita-election-as-pm-a-green-light-for-jobs-capital-inflows-pheu-thai-srettha/ -- © Copyright Thai Examiner 2023-06-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Interpol red notices sought for 2 people allegedly involved in extortion of online gambling gang
Thai Interpol are expected to issue Red notices today (Sunday) for two civilians who are alleged to be involved with a group of police officers in extorting about 140 million baht from alleged members of an illegal online gambling gang. Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police chief, who has been put in charge of investigating the extortion case, in which eight police officers, including Chon Buru provincial police commander, Pol Maj-Gen Kampol Leelaprapaporn, are implicated, said today that the two civilians have left Thailand. Kampol and his seven subordinates were transferred to the operations centre of the Royal Thai Police headquarters yesterday, pending the outcome of an investigation. Surachate also said that summonses will be issued for the police officers to acknowledge the charges against them. Thai children losing out on height due to too little milk
Packed with essential nutrients, milk is an integral part of children’s diets and supports their growth. It contains calcium, which is great for the teeth and the bones, and has other health benefits too, among them boosting the immune system, strengthening heart health, and improving the skin, according to experts. Yet despite these advantages, a study shows milk consumption is low among young Thais, raising concerns over their short stature. Thai children tend to be on the short side because they drink too little milk, says Dr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, director general of the Department of Health (DoH). The percentage of “short” Thai teenagers has increased from 9.5% to 10.4% over the past years. And that short stature can be attributed to inadequate milk intake. Dr Suwannachai was speaking at a special event hosted at the DoH’s office and chaired by him to mark World Milk Day 2023. The aim was to raise awareness about the importance of drinking milk. Meeting of eight coalition parties postponed to June 22nd
The eight coalition parties, led by Move Forward, have decided to postpone their meeting to discuss the formation of a new government from June 20th to June 22nd, to await the Election Commission’s (EC) official confirmation of the May 14th general election results, expected on June 21st. An informed coalition source said that the EC’s official confirmation will provide a clearer picture of how many constituency and party-list seats each coalition party has won, which is a key factor in determining how many cabinet seats they will get. The EC is expected to announce the confirmed election results of 100 party-list MPs and 400 constituency MPs-elect, except for the 71 whose cases are under investigation. The 71 “problematic” constituency MPs-elect include 21 from the Bhumjaithai party, 17 from Pheu Thai, 16 from Palang Pracharath, 6 from Move Forward, 3 each from Democrat and United Thai Nation, 2 from Thai Sang Thai and 1 from Pheu Thai Ruam Palang. Thai rice exports set to rise amid El Niño concerns
Thai rice exports have a favourable horizon in 2023, as they are projected to exceed 8 million tonnes. This boost in international demand is linked to global concerns about the possible consequences of the El Niño weather event, resulting in several countries aiming to expand their stockpiles, according to Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit. The minister indicated that the Philippines plans to raise its rice acquisition by 2-3 million tonnes, while Indonesia is speeding up the process to secure considerable amounts of rice from Thailand and Vietnam. Iraq’s imports are estimated to be around 1 million tonnes for the year, matching the same volume as 2022. Jurin noted that Vietnam, in preparation for domestic needs, is lessening its rice exports while shifting its emphasis to growing fruit and coffee. Moreover, he highlighted that the weaker Thai baht is making rice shipments from the country more competitive in the international market. Just last year, Thai rice shipments reached 7.69 million tonnes, exceeding the ministry’s target of 7.5 million tonnes. The goal for 2023 is set between 7.5-8 million tonnes of rice exports. by Alex Morgan Image by Thirawatana Phaisalratana, via Flickr Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/thai-rice-exports-set-to-rise-amid-el-nino-concerns -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Celebrity son of Thailand’s ‘Mr Clean’ engulfed in crypto scandal
Surabot Leekpai, the celebrity son of a man dubbed the “Mr Clean” of Thai politics, has been accused of swindling crypto investors out of millions. Investors in the Crypto Ronin NFT Project have filed a joint complaint with police against Surabot, claiming damages totaling 15 million baht. Surabot has declined to comment when quizzed about the allegations, saying only that his lawyer is handling the issue. What happened? Widely known as “Pleum”, Surabot launched the “play-to-earn” crypto project last year. His credibility earned through family connections attracted many to invest even before the project was fully developed. When the game failed to launch as scheduled in the second quarter of 2022, investors agreed to wait a bit longer. Suspicions were only aroused after the project owner deleted their account on the Line messaging platform and migrated to Discord. The final straw came in recent months when Bitkub officially removed Crypto Ronin NFT from its list of registered projects and Surabot stopped responding to their queries. Thai Immigration Police Crack Down on Two Chinese Fraud Cases, Uncovering Identity Theft and Counterfeit Visas
BANGKOK - Lieutenant General Phakphong Phongphetra, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, held a press conference to announce the significant arrests in two separate Chinese fraud cases. In the first case, officers from the Immigration Bureau's Division 5 apprehended Mr. Jiang (pseudonym), a 37-year-old Chinese national who was wanted on multiple charges related to fraud and money laundering. Mr. Jiang had been impersonating others and engaging in organized transnational criminal activities since 2013, reported Thai Rath. Upon his arrest, authorities seized his Chinese passport, travel documents, and mobile phone, which were crucial pieces of evidence. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mr. Jiang had deceived victims by convincing them to transfer money into a digital wallet that he controlled before his criminal network moved the funds elsewhere. Picture: Thai Rath The second case involved two individuals, both Chinese nationals, who were accused of impersonating Thai citizens and using counterfeit visas and government documents to deceive their compatriots. The suspects, identified as Mr. Ding and Ms. Kulthida (aliases), aged 32 and 27 respectively, were wanted for counterfeiting political insignias, public organization emblems, or the signatures of government officials in passports. Investigators discovered that they had tricked numerous individuals into believing that they had the authority to extend their stay in Thailand. However, their fraudulent activities were exposed when their fake visas and stamps were detected during immigration processes. Picture: Thai Rath Following complaints filed by victims who had fallen for their scam advertisements online, officers from the Crime Suppression Division's Subdivision 4 launched an investigation. The authorities successfully obtained arrest warrants for both suspects. Upon searching their residence in the Mueang district of Min Buri, Bangkok, law enforcement officers found 64 Chinese passports (with counterfeit stamps and visas) and 41 forged government documents. Picture: Thai Rath They also seized multiple mobile phones. The suspects admitted to their crimes, and further investigations are underway. Both cases highlight the increasing sophistication of transnational fraud operations and the importance of international cooperation in combating such criminal activities. The Thai authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to protect the public and ensure the integrity of immigration processes. Supreme Court verdict on former DSI chief and other officials due on July 10th
The Supreme Court has instructed the Criminal Court to read its verdict concerning Tarit Pengdit, former director-general of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), and three other officials within 30 days. The instruction comes after the defendants have repeatedly sought postponements of the reading of the verdict. The Criminal Court has set July 10th for the publication of the Supreme Court’s verdict. The Criminal Court was also instructed to summon a doctor at Phyathai 2 hospital, Dr. Ayuthinee Singhakowinta, for an explanation, after the court found a discrepancy in her signatures on doctor’s certificates confirming that Tarit’s health rendered him unable to attend court. The court has set July 3rd for a special hearing with Dr. Ayuthinee. Thailand remains in Tier 2 on latest US Trafficking in Persons report
Thailand remains in Tier 2 of the latest Trafficking in Persons report (2023 TIP Report), published by the U.S. State Department earlier today (Friday), along with other 104 out of the 188 countries and territories assessed around the world. The report grades countries on how well or poorly they are doing in combating human trafficking, based on the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA). Being in Tier 2 means that the Thai government does not fully meet the TVPA’s minimum standards, but is making significant efforts to bring the country into compliance. Countries in Tier 2 include Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Italy and Indonesia, for example. The report also shares stories of workers who have been trafficked from country to country, including Thailand. One such case was a 20-year-old Uzbek who was recruited to work in information technology in Thailand. He was, however, trafficked to Myanmar, along with many others, and forced to work for an internet scam ring. Another case was a Cambodian man who was lured to fly to the Philippines, but was trafficked to China while he was traveling through Thailand and forced to run online cryptocurrency scams. iTV: Born of Bloody May, trouble under Thaksin, and now Pita’s nemesis?
Though it went off air 15 years ago, Thailand’s first independent broadcaster iTV is back in the spotlight with a central role in the saga that could decide whether or not Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat becomes the next prime minister. In 2008, Pita inherited 42,000 shares in iTV Plc following his father’s death in 2006. Earlier this month, Pita disclosed that he had recently allocated the iTV shares to other heirs of the estate. His accuser, Ruangkrai Leekitwattana, said records show that the embattled PM candidate transferred all his iTV shares to his younger brother on May 25. Pita’s iTV shareholding has become a major obstacle in his path to the premiership despite his party’s stunning victory in the May 14 general election. Move Forward won 151 of the 500 MP seats up for grabs, beating pre-election favorite Pheu Thai into second place with 141. However, the Election Commission (EC) is now investigating whether Pita contested the poll despite knowing he was not qualified to do so because of his stake in iTV. The agency rejected three petitions filed by Ruangkrai, who asked it to investigate if Pita’s shareholding violated the Constitution’s rule that bars anyone from contesting for an MP seat if they are “the owner of or shareholder in any newspaper or mass media business”. Born out of Bloody May The idea of setting up an independent TV station in Thailand was born after the crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in May 1992, which became known as “Bloody May”. Over 50 people were killed and about 700 injured, according to official records, after security forces opened fire on demonstrators protesting the government of General Suchinda Kraprayoon, who resigned in disgrace shortly afterwards. 79 new MPs face scrutiny as Election Commission says only 321 to be declared elected on June 21st
On Wednesday, the Secretary-general of the Election Commission announced that 321 Constituency MPs would be confirmed on June 21st while the election of a further 79 provisionally declared MPs was being examined following complaints and due to a lack of confirmation for inspectors. The result of the May 14th General Election faces intractable uncertainty focused on the Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat (inset), who is the subject of claims that he held shares in a media firm, something prohibited under the 2018 Election law. The delay in confirming the MPs elected to parliament comes with reports of discrepancies in 16 provinces and controversy over the status of Mr Pita Limjaroenrat, the man seeking to become Thailand’s next Prime Minister, as he faces a complex and intractable complaint relating to shares in a media firm. The Thai General Election results faced increasing uncertainty, this week, after the Election Commission announced, on Wednesday, that the status of 79 MPs provisionally declared elected on a constituency basis, was being investigated based on either complaints or unconfirmed endorsements from election inspectors. Earlier this week, the poll agency announced recounts in 16 provinces covering twenty provincially elected MPs. With just four weeks to go before a deadline set by law to certify the 500 MPs related to the House of Representatives in the May 14th General Election, the Election Commission, on Wednesday, revealed that poll results for 79 MPs, running in 400 constituencies on the local ballot and who were initially declared provisional winners, are to be placed under investigation as they were the subject of complaints made against the election result. Last week, the Election Commission announced a recount of votes relating to 20 MPs across 16 provinces as it was found that the total number of votes counted in those areas did not match the tally for ballots issued or people who had voted in the poll. Immigration Bureau Chief says he’s preparing for a possible return of Thaksin who faces arrest
Thaksin Shinawatra (centre), the former premier, according to his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, on Wednesday, is still intent on returning to Thailand on July 26th as previously announced. On the same day, the Immigration Bureau Chief, Police Lieutenant General Pakphoomphiphat Sajaphan (inset), told reporters that his police agency was coordinating a potential response to the former prime minister’s return which would see him arrested on foot of warrants. He said that while the arrest of Mr Thaksin would be controversial, particularly on social media, his officers would strictly follow procedure. Ex PM Thaksin says he wishes to return to be with his seven grandchildren while describing his current exile in Dubai as akin to a larger prison just without walls. He claims he is ready to surrender to authorities. Thailand’s Immigration Bureau Chief Police Lieutenant General Pakphoomphiphat Sajaphan, on Wednesday, told reporters that his officers were coordinating a response to the eventuality of the return of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to Thailand. Mr Thaksin’s daughter, key Pheu Thai leader, Ms Paetongtarn Shinawatra, on the same day, told reporters that although her family was concerned at the prospect of her father’s return on a personal basis, the decision was one he had to take alone. She confirmed that, at this time, he has not decided to postpone his intended return on July 26th next. There are indications that the family of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is concerned about the possible impact of his planned return to Thailand at the end of next month which is due to coincide with Mr Thaksin’s birthday on July 26th. Take Me Out Thailand: American man gets blackout for his male chauvinistic attitude
Thirty Thai women in the popular dating game show Take Me Out Thailand gave a blackout to an arrogant 22 year old American man after he showed his male chauvinistic side. He insisted at the end of the show that he told the truth, thankfully the Thai contestants would not accept a man who appeared to have stepped out of a 1950s time machine. The episode sparked a heated discussion among Thai netizens. In the Take Me Out Thailand game show, which was aired on June 10, the single American man, who introduced himself as Tangmo in Thai, joined the show hoping to win the hearts of 30 Thai women. Throughout the episode, Tangmo expressed his views on married life, leaving many women on the show and netizens alike in disagreement. So, the girls gave him a blackout. Tangmo said in the show in Thai… “I consider myself a conservative person. For me, a man must be the breadwinner, working for the family. A man is a leader while a woman is a follower and supporter. I do not mean to imply that a man is superior to a woman but each has to do their duties.” Continuing his discourse, the American shared his perspective on the concept of loyalty. He stated… “Some women who claim to desire multiple husbands have likely been influenced by social media. However, their true instincts don’t align with such desires. A good woman will desire only one man. The value of a woman is her purity. It is different for a man. Man’s instinct needs more than one woman. “The meaning of loyalty is different from a woman. A man must take care of his partner and uphold his promises. If a man can take care of more than one woman, it is fine. All men want more than one woman. It depends on whether they will tell the truth to the women or not. For me, I want to have many children. If that woman could not give me, so she will have more friends at home.” by Petch Petpailin Photo via Take Me Out Thailand TV Thunder Official Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/take-me-out-thailand-american-man-gets-blackout-for-his-male-chauvinistic-attitude -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Myanmar conflict surge: Over 3,300 refugees seek shelter in Thailand
The conflict in Myanmar‘s Kayah State has led to a surge of refugees seeking shelter in Thailand. Provincial Governor Chettha Mosikkharat confirmed that Thai authorities have rescued a total of 3,342 refugees who fled the border war. The fighting in Kayah State involves the Karenni Army (KA), backed by the People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) and the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF), and began with an attack on Mae Jae police station and three military bases. This escalation in the Myanmar conflict followed a previous KA operation which captured at least three bases near Tambon Khun Yuam in the Khun Yuam district, Bangkok Post reported. Khu Nial, Minister of Internal Affairs for Kayah State, reported that the attack on Mae Jae occurred across from Thailand’s Baan Sao Hin in Mae Hong Son province. Consequently, an influx of refugees entered the province through Mae Sariang and Khun Yuam districts. by Mitch Connor Photo Courtesy of Free Burma Rangers via AP Newsroom Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/myanmar-conflict-surge-over-3300-refugees-seek-shelter-in-thailand -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Pressure mounts on EC to announce May 14th election results
Members of civic groups monitoring the May 14th general election gathered at the Office of the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday to demand a speedy announcement of the poll results. A letter, addressed to the EC chairman, demands that they announce the poll results as quickly as possible and explain the delay. Yingcheep Atchanont of iLaw, one of the demonstrators, said that it has been a month since the election on May 14th and the recounting of votes at over 40 polling stations was completed on June 11th, therefore, there is no justification for the EC’s continued procrastination. Although the EC has 60 days after the election to announce results, Yingcheep said that it is unnecessary for them to take such a long time, noting that, in the previous general elections, the EC took only 16 days to announce the 2005 election results, 29 days in 2007, 24 days in 2011 and 45 days in 2019. The longer the delay, he claimed, the more the people will become suspicious and lose faith in the EC. Thaksin Insists On Returning Next Month Despite Family’s Warning
DE FACTO PHEU THAI BOSS Thaksin Shinawatra has not postponed his planned homecoming from next month despite a desperate warning against it from members of his family. Thaksin’s daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, one of a trio of Pheu Thai partisan contestants for prime minister, said today (June 14) her father has not as yet put off his homecoming scheme and insisted that he will be returning from self-exile abroad within next month though his family members earlier asked him to think twice about it. The Shinawatra family members, especially his ex-spouse Podjaman na Pombejra, have been reportedly worried to the extent that he might possibly be “fooled around” by others again and strongly suggested that he put off his planned return at least until a post-election government has been practically put in place. In reality, Thailand is not the LGBTQ+ paradise like it pretends to be
June is when we celebrate Pride Month worldwide, and of course, many businesses change their profile photos to be rainbows for a month. Some brands would launch a new product serving in all rainbow colours. We’d talk about LGBTQ+ for a bit and once June has passed, everything goes back to normal like Pride Month was just one of those marketing campaigns Lazada does once a month for their 3.3, 4.4, 5.5, 6.6, and so on. Just like democracy in this country, the LGBTQ+ rights are also just illusional (well, at least there’s hope for our democratic system right now). You may think that Thailand seems like the sweetest paradise when it comes to being an LGBTQ+ person, but under this rainbow surface, the country has yet to officially pass any regulations for all gender inclusive. Thailand’s reputation as an LGBT-friendly haven stems from its historical tolerance and acceptance of gender diversity. We have embraced our transgender community who are visible in various social and cultural spheres. Swedish bank notes now useless abroad
Several foreign banks do not want to accept the Swedish krona - which affects travelers who cannot exchange money during the trip. According to the currency dealer Forex, it has not been possible to exchange the Swedish krona abroad for several days. For Swedish tourists, it becomes problematic, as they cannot exchange money for the local currency. According to Dagens Nyheter, Thailand and some countries in the Middle East refuse to buy in the Swedish krona. When Swedish tourists visited foreign banks and exchange offices, they were told that "Sweden does not want the krona to be used abroad", according to DN. Forex has confirmed the information on its website. "Many customers contacted Forex customer service and wondered what to do after they failed to obtain local currencies abroad," says Tom Friberg, head of communications at Forex, to DN. The change happened suddenly and many were taken aback. “It happened quickly. Overnight starting May 31. But it also seems that foreign banks and exchange offices have started to act like this a few days before," says Tom Friberg. According to Forex, it is about Nordic banks no longer wanting to repatriate (buy back) their local currencies from abroad. Since the turn of the year, Danish banks have acted in this way, and now Norwegian and Swedish banks are also doing the same. This in turn means that foreign banks or exchange offices cannot get rid of the Swedish currency that they buy in from, for example, tourists. There is not much information from the Swedish banks about this. Forex writes on its website that they are currently working on finding answers. Those of you planning to travel abroad should make sure to exchange money before departure. Also do not take Swedish cash abroad with you, Forex writes on its website. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2023-06-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai Banks are Starting to Require Facial Recognition for High-Value Transactions
Thailand – Financial institutions in Thailand have begun mandating facial recognition for customers conducting high-value transactions. The move, aimed at reducing fraudulent activities and scams, is expected to provide extra security for clients. Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul announced that all commercial and government banks will implement this new security measure. Starting from July, customers transacting 50,000 baht or more via mobile banking, or whose transactions exceed a daily limit of 200,000 baht, will be required to verify their identities via facial recognition systems. Traisuree explained that this measure is part of broader anti-cybercrime initiatives spearheaded by the Bank of Thailand (BOT) and other relevant agencies.
