Electric Vehicles in Thailand
Our Jaecoo J5 has been almost fault free since purchase in October 2025. Our only issue has been the cabin switch for the tailgate stopped working in the first week of ownership. Otherwise we are very satisfied with the car. Currently averaging 12.1 kWh/100 kl's in ECO mode which gives a theoretical range of 460 klm's. Will continue to work on getting this < / = 10 kWh/100 with more conservative driving. One point to be aware of is the calibration of the energy recovery settings. Ours is set to LOW as it is the smoothest when decelerating, and it is still not as smooth as I'd like. Hopefully there will be an update that fixes this so lifting off the throttle isn't as intrusive. While this does detract somewhat from the driving experience, overall the car is still enjoyable to drive. It offers excellent value for money given the trim and standard equipment offered.

PEA / MEA Earth Rod Regulations for EV Wall Charger
The existing Al cable is 12mm2 - they propose changing it to 15mm2 Cu. The price quoted was, in my opinion, reasonable for what they were proposing but it appeared to include some unecessary items such as replacing the existing cable. Given your reply above maybe not so unecessary after all, but use 10mm2

PEA / MEA Earth Rod Regulations for EV Wall Charger
Thanks Crossy. The shed is on its own feed from the mains. The earth circuit they propose is separate to the supply, from the ELB direct to the ground spike. Also, they contend that the aluminium cable from the mains to the shed should be replaced with copper. I understand that copper is a better conductor but the charger is rated at 43A and the house & shed both have 60A breakers. I don't understand why they want to replace the cable. Seems like they are over specifying the job.

PEA / MEA Earth Rod Regulations for EV Wall Charger
Third party electrical contractor wants to install a 2 m X 2 cm copper earth rod directly underneath the new wall charger located on a wall in the car shed. When our house was built the electicians placed the earth rod 4 metres from the outside wall of the house. Does anyone know whether there is a PEA / MEA regulation stating the location of the earth rod & the distance it is required to be from the building alignment.

Have you ever felt unsafe in Thailand
Only once when dealing with the village "Electrician" and his attempts at wiring an ELCB. His idea of an earth circuit left a lot to be desired...

Further to my earlier tongue in cheek comments, we took our new Jaecoo E5 on a more extended drive yesterday (80 klm's, mainly on highway). The following observations: 1. Wife finds the passengers seat less than comfortable - she had already ordered a set of "booster" cushions that seem to have fixed the problem. 2. The driving experience is good: firm ride and well planted on the road. Steering is responsive and direct in normal mode (haven't tried sport). It won't win any traffic light duels but once mobile the torque surge makes overtaking a breeze. 3. Rough surface roads do create a noticable increase in road noise - there is a lack of sound deadening material on the inner panels (easily fixed). The tyres are also part of the problem. 4. Definitely need window tinting to keep the glare down. Was quoted ฿6,000 by the dealer we bought the car from. When asked to confirm the brand and type of film their response was vague - will source a local supplier (Lamina seems to be a popular brand). 5. Economy looks good so far: 11 kWh per 100 klm in eco mode. Driven very conservatively just to see how low I can coax it. Aiming for single figures to maximise range and despite having Solar PV for home recharging. 6. After market model-specific floor mats work a treat (many thanks Paul). Came with a complimentary fabric shampoo and micro cleaning cloth

Very limited driving since we picked it up from the dealer. Waiting for another chance to give it the "Wife falls asleep test" which was almost achieved on the way back from Roi Et. Villagers are more than a little surprised at the THB599.0K price with most guessing between THB800.0K - THB1.0M. Must be the color.

Foreigners rally against BBC's ‘Thailand: the dark side’ doc
To make an equivalent documentary on the UK would take twice as long.

I was driving, with Bandersnatch sitting in the passenger seat. The step between Level 1 and Level 2 is quite noticeable, with Level 2 regen being quite pronounced. The step between Level 2 and 3 was less pronounced.

Krungthai Bank now doing FATCA/CRS ?
Went to our local branch to complete CRS requirements and found this little gem when about to sign off, "...and provide consent for KTB and/or Relevant Company to debit fund in my account," The Thai language version of this clause has no mention of consent according to SWMBO.

Changed from a retirement visa to a marriage visa last month. Do I have to go through this whole process again next year?
Income proof is most often accepted if it is either from employment in Thailand, or you can get a supporting letter from your embassy. Thank you for your reply BT. Unfortunately Australia, like the US and several other countries do not provide supporting letters. Found another option here: https://pcec.club/Married/Related-to-a-Thai

"Also use only the 400k in the bank, don't even try the income option, some offices won't do it anyway." Is this from personal experience or is it across the board? What have others experienced with the income option? Is it a requirement to have 40.0K THB deposited every month or 480.0K (or more) over a 12 month period?
