  1. Your modern version of Coventry's finest should have the ZF(6HP26)Transmission. As was said there are other makes of cars with that model box and for sure a few here in Thailand. I would try first looking for a compleat replacement from one of the write off cars garages, if your lucky you will get someone who will phone around and find something, it's truly amazing whats around in these garages, the word on the street is the xk8 box is a snatchy squawky beast once theres a few miles on it so don't pay everything up front, good luck.

I think that the later versions use the ZF 6HP26, but the 1998 model seems to list the ZF 5HP24 trans. The ZF 5HP24 is a bit of an odd tranny. It was installed in some of the BMW 7 series as well, I believe it was the E38 740il. The key with this transmission is that is uses a special fluid, and was "sealed for life" from the factory (never intended to be serviced, just replaced). However, you can buy the fluid (expensive and maybe hard to find here) and top up the tranny yourself if you find the correct fill location etc. Your transmission sounds like it is simply low on fluid, perhaps the lining of the torque converter is going (this is a more common failure than a real trans. problem) If it is one of the serviceable ones, change out the filter, replace all the fluid and start form there. have a look here:

  2. It is generally not possible to convert diesel engines to LPG/NGV. While some bus and truck companies do it, it is extreemly expensive. I remember in the UK it cost me 1200 Pounds to convert my V8 Land Rover, a diesel was 10,000 -15,000! You will have to lookout for a rare 2.7 litre V6 petrol Toyota Vigo if you want a pickup with LPG.

I may be mistaken but I thought that Nissan had some petrol pickups as well up to about 2002-2003?

  3. I personally would never buy a used auto transmission, unless it was from a verifiable low mileage wreck. The cost quoted seems ridiculous, given that should cover an entirely new transmission or thereabouts. I had a BMW 7 series with a ZF transmission, and it "needed a rebuild" - turned out that the valve body needed cleaning, and some new solenoids installed and it was like new again for about $500. Jaguar did have a recall for your year tranny, due to cracked gear teeth, but this only affected a few hundred cars total - a bad batch of gears I suppose. It would be more helpful if you mentioned what the transmission was doing wrong. Does the car move, shift, reverse, shudder, etc. Might be something simple, might be the torque converter and not the transmission at all. When I diagnose mechanical problems, I tend to like to eliminate all of the simple items first. Often, relatively inexperienced mechanics like to quickly diagnose (without much consideration) and replace large parts. This way, it can't come back on them. I call this the gas cap approach - if you lift up the gas cap, slide a new car underneath, then screw the gas cap back on, that should fix the problem.

  4. samui doesn't need a second airport.

BKK air needs to have its monopoly powers stripped away from it, and open the current airport up based on landing charges which reflect more reasonable anding charges elsewhere. Currently BKK airways has an effective monoply on Samui, preventing other airlines from landing there.

For consumers, this is a bad thing.

Spot on. The capacity for the existing airport is sufficient, but as a monopoly, BKK airways will only send up profitable flights. Bkk air has to be credited with developing tourism, the hotel industry, property industry, spas etc on the island but we seem to be at a point where the monopoly has to end for the sake of the businesses on the island. The Government (oh yeah, what's that again...?) needs to step in and we need more and cheaper flights to fill hotel beds, more of which are coming online all the time.

  5. They work for a major name ( Hotel, development) on Samui.I will not mention it just in case I'm wrong. But if someone can find out WHO , contact one of the local papers looking for articles & get them to do an expose on them, which I doubt they would as they will probably do not want to endanger their advertisement revenue.

Now let's see if Samui Xpress will pick up on that & run with it.

    check spelling oops.

The problem is that the Hotel and related timeshare company in question is backended by some very powerful and well connected Thais. An expose is likely to get one a lead sandwich so... I hear they cold call people in their hotel rooms, ie: they call some random hotel room in the morning and try to set up an appointment with whoever answers the phone. I had one shout at me from across the street, telling me to cross the road! Unf*cking likely! Scum is right

On the other hand, a different sort of salesman is about, a middle aged european who rides around on a motorbike asking good looking couples (any gender mix) if they would like to be filmed having sex for money. I was with a friend the other day in Chaweng and this turd pulled up beside us...we had a good laugh.

  6. Jai Dee Dental clinic in Nathon is great. They are right around the corner from the Honda motorbike dealer, where the two one way roads meet. Fair prices, with a rate card on the front desk in Thai and English (same prices both) and very good work. The dentist was a former dental surgeon at a hospital in BKK, can do everything there in-house and his mother in law owns the building, so he pays no rent (therefore good rates). I have had cleanings, a filling replaced, 2 root canals, and now he is making a new steel post and 2 new crowns for me, and its all top quality work at prices about 1/10th or less than what I would pay in Canada. call them at 077 420 355

  7. book separately

1.at any thai travel AGENT a return to vancouver. Does that REALLY have to be vis JPn or so?

2.then book online aircanada, or whatever you choose/know for a domestic return Vanc-Toronto

There are no flights direct to Thailand from Canada on any airline that I am aware of, so one has to fly via (somewhere).

I realise that this would probably be the simplest thing to do as you describe, but I'm trying to avoid an extra 5hr flight if possible.

  8. I'm looking at booking a trip back home to Canada for my sister's wedding this summer, and was wondering if anyone has had experience in booking a multi destination ticket. I want to arrive in Toronto, fly to Vancouver and then fly back to Thailand (via HK or JPN) while avoiding as much ticket price rapeage as possible. Any hints would be appreciated.

  9. So...

Cabinet reshuffle official; Chalongphob gets finance

    (BangkokPost.com)

His Majesty the King on Wednesday approved the new cabinet, including the appointment of Chalongphob Sussangkarn as new finance minister and Paiboon Wattanasiritham as deputy prime minister overseeing social affairs.

Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp announced the new lineup, calling it a "complete reshuffle". In fact, few ministers were affected, and none appeared to have been dismissed.

There are two other new faces in addition to Mr Chalongphob, whose appointment was expected.

They include Poldej Pinprateep, the deputy social development and human security minister, and Morakot Kornkasem, deputy public health minister.

Dr Poldej is former social development and human security secretary while Dr Morakot is an advisor to Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla before the royal approval.

Neither ministry had a deputy minister before the appointments.

Mr Chalongphob, a former World Bank economist, replaces M.R. Pridiyathorn who resigned from the cabinet last week.

Mr Paiboon, currently Social Development and Human Security Minister, is appointed to a second post in the cabinet, to help Gen Surayud to oversee social affairs."

Some good news finally, or more of the same?

  10. I think the basic requirements are :

    Company registration

    Passport (copies)

    Work Permit (copies)

    One Photo (passport style)

Even though they call this a "resident" card, they seem to focus more on the business owners, otherwise a passport copy and rental agreement or some such would suffice. No idea if they will do for Tao/Phangan...anyone try yet??

  11. The key is a little cream instead of milk or water, 3 eggs, non stick pan, low heat, cover after about 1 min cooking. When only the top layer is still uncooked, add cheese, wait 30 seconds to 1min then fold over. The cream will make a less fluffy omlette, but richer flavour. It will take you a few tries to get right, as the combination of heat and timing is crucial. I like asparagus and crabmeat too, good with a lil sharp cheese. good luck

  12. Sportsbike vs. Scooter. Hmmmm

Since there are 500-600cc scooters available from Honda, Yamaha, Aprilia that could easily outrace a CBR150, one might easily assume that something like a cbr150 is not a Sportbike. When I started racing motorcycles, I learned to hone my skills on a RS125 Honda - a production race motorcycle that was more sporting and fun, than most litre bikes are. It seems that the poster who thinks a little bike with low horsepower cannot be sporting seems to forget that motorcycles are incredibly good fun to ride around corners. Straight line speed is great, I have ridden everything - and I mean everything. Having raced professionally for many years, I can happily say that the fun of riding - the sport of it all as it were- is pushing whatever machine you are on to its and your own limit. Anyone who harasses other people who are having fun on their bike, and who's main claim to fame in terms of riding themselves are occasional rides on friends' borrowed bikes...err...shut it please. :o

  13. I know there is a service between Chumphon and Samui by boat, but the Hua Hin leg is covered by bus. So, you go Hua hin to Chumphon by bus, then chumphon to samui via Koh Nangyuan, Koh Tao and Koh Phangnan by high speed Catamaran. The boat is fairly new, quiet, safe, roomy - A good service.

  14. I know that at least one of the Songserm boats is 60+ yrs old. Those are wood, some leak slowly, are noisy and I find quite unpleasant to take. The Seatran Boats are decommissioned Chinese passenger ferries, you can still see the Chinese writing on several parts of the boats. The Raja ferry, I think I wont take it anymore because the last one that I took was taking on a lot of water and was riding quite low in the water relative to the car deck. Some scary stuff here for sure. :o

  15. Thanks for the tips guys.

Problem is the mixture is still too rich with the mixture screw hard down tight as a gnat's orifice. Guess it's time to change the carburettor, or at least the mixture jet?

It is likely then that the overly rich mixture is due to the little tip of the mixture screw being broken off due to over tightening, or that the float needle is stuck, or some such problem with your carb. Also, i want to distinguish between a fuel mixture screw and an air bypass screw on your carburetor. Carbs have either one or the other, never both. If the screw that you are adjusting is closer to the engine side of the carb than the air intake side, then the function of the screw is to adjust fuel metering on the idle circuit by reducing or increasing the amount of fuel passing by the orifice which the tapered end of the fuel metering screw controls. Some carbs (like those on 2 stroke bikes and some older design 4 strokes such as scooters etc) have an air bypass screw, which is located on the air intake side, rather than the engine side of the carb. If you turn this one in, you would be RICHENING the mixture, because you would be reducing the amount of air in the air/fuel mixture. Make sure that you know which type of carb you have, and are adjusting it properly. Remember

Air Bypass screw : turn in for rich, out for lean

Fuel Mixture screw: Turn in for lean, out for rich

Now you should be well and truly confused, but this may be your problem.

  16. Hi!

Wondered if anyone knew of a guitar-shop that sell Takamine Acoustic guitars in BKK? I'll be in Thailand in a week or so, and would really like to bring home a new beauty. Some years ago, I bought a Takamine in a shop in World Trade Center, but I don't know if that shop still exist (and guitars are probably more expensive her than other places...)

If anyone has got a phonenumber, or even just a name for a shop,I'd be most grateful. The guitar I'm looking for (TAN15c) is perhaps one they have to order for me specially, so I need to get in touch with the shop..

    Best!

    Tom

A Guitar shop in Central World Mall has a large selection of Takamine guitars, I believe that it is on the 3rd or 4th floor. Any taxi driver will take you there, just ask for "centun word"

  17. Warm the engine up, then turn the idle screw up so that the bike is idling smoothly ( a slightly high idle). Then turn the mixture screw in slowly

until the engine starts to sputter, turn it back out in quarter turn increments until the engine has the highest idle speed (engine will run most efficiently and thus have a higher idle on the correct mixture setting). adjust the idle screw for a nice steady, low idle, and you are done.

I'm really sorry but this is not correct. It will give you the most economical tick-over, but will be running too weak and unable to pull a load and accelerate. Where did you learn to do this?

Well, this is the tried and true quick and dirty method, and works fine. Your method would have an inexperienced "tuner" pulling the plug to check for colour, regardless of whether or not he is riding on the idle circuit, or on the slide/needle or main jet circuit. Pulling a load? He is riding a 100cc honda dream, where he will be on the idle circuit (up to 1/4 throttle) for about .2 of a second until he is WFO just to keep up with traffic, lol. In a former life I was a professional motorcycle mechanic, roadraced at pro level for 8 years and built and tuned hundreds of engines. Since you asked. And, never be sorry.

  20. I just recieved my new Mitsu Triton 4dr 4x4. I drive a lot on crap roads and up into the mountains, and want to buy a set of wheels/tires for general/off-road use that will be functional as well as look good. The wheel/tire package that comes stock on the Triton 4x4 lets down the rest of the vehicle, which is quite robust. Any suggestions as to brand/store, online sources etc? Also, what is a fair (ball park) price for aftermarket wheels and tires here? I'm getting quoted all kinds of prices from local sources, the usual "farang with deep pockets as evidenced by his new truck" syndrome. Note: stock wheel/tire size is 245/70/16 on relatively narrow 16 in rims, and I'm not interested in bling bling chrome spinner 22's with 35 aspect ratio tires. Thanks
