  1. The universal docking station is what you want. To connect to your stereo you need a Mini to RCA cable. By going through the doc you can bypass the iPods volume control giving better SQ. Also import using Apple Lossless Encorder with error correction.

Thanks for the various suggestions. I hadn't thought of the idea of just connecting the iPod to the stereo via the headphone jack.

Being a decidedly un-technical person, Bob's message confuses me. Is the universal docking station (a) truly necessary, (b)somewhat useful or © just another way for me to waste money? I'm not sure what "better SQ" implies or what an "Apple Lossless Encoder" is. Ignorance is not always bliss.

Sorry for the confusion, first "better SQ" means better sound quality, secound "Apple Lossless Encoder" with error correction enabled is one of the encoding options in iTunes(in iTunes Preferences>Advanced) for ripping a CD into iTunes. It is a compression format you can use without loss of any data from the original CD unlike MP3 compression where a significant amount of the data is lost from the original CD.

The docking is not necessary to get sound out, it just will sound alot better.

  2. The best place to look and listen, is at the Hi Fi Center in Bangkok on Ratchadamri Road (next to Big C). It's like an audio/video shopping mall.

Also closer to Pattaya there is Piyanas in Siracha (038-325-701).

In the Bose price range look at Denon Receiver, Oppo DVD player, and NHT Classic Three speakers.

If you want to hear how a "good" system sounds - go to the Hi Fi Center.

  3. I am interested in buying a Bose Lifestyle Home Entertainment system. I have been to Numchai in Pattaya but i don't get that much confidence about their ability to install the system to a good enough standard, plus their prices are very steep. Does anyone know of any other supplier within Thailand that comes recommended? I am aware that there is an in country direct dealer but when i go onto their web site all the information is obviously in Thai, so i am at a loss as to their location.

Do some research on the Bose system first.

  4. Good to hear you are expanding and working on improving with your staff. I have been to the Soi 14 location a few times and am happy with the quality of food. Last time I was there (early July) I ordered 1 borrito and 3 tacos (of the same type) on a single order form (using one column for the burrito and one for the 3 tacos). The worker who made the tacos seemed a little confused when reading the order form, and when I opened the order up at home discovered I had 3 differently prepaired tacos: one correct as ordered, one made with the burrito toppings in the first column, and one without any meat! The borrito was made correctly but was prepaired by a different worker - delicious. Anyway, the food still satisified our craving but I would suggest providing an order form at the restaurant more like the fax form on your website which I think is much more clear as it uses rows rather than columns for each item ordered and has a clear list of all the topping options.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Have not been in Thailand or in the stores the last three weeks. I have been on vacation and it seems the stores numbers have not gone down much. Some days I could see they miss me. :-)

Will be making some changes to help the staff even more. I like your ideas.

The funny thing is, its so easy at all the Taco places I visited in the States even when they don't speak English just Spanish. Then again its just the meat, onion and cilantro and some salsa on the tacos. No sour cream, cheese, jalapenons or guacamole option.

I feel our meat was better than most of the places I visited in the States with the exception of Chipotle. I visited 23 taco stands and no one came close to Chipotle burrito. It was pure heaven and better than even our burrito. The problem I had with the meat at most places was it was bland and greasy. So much that I would get a headache after eating it. IMHO, a close second to the best taco and burrito was Robertos Tacos, which was very good. Even after the $26.00 taxi to get one taco and a burrito from there, I was happy.

Some new changes will be happening but not with our meat. IMHO we have nailed it. What we also are the star in is our guacamole. My God some of this stuff they call guacamole in the States, they should be ashamed. The only place that came close to ours, I paid over $10.00 ( 300 baht) for and they made it at my table in front of me. Chipotle is a distant second to ours. You come to Sunrise Tacos, try our " Stephanies Guacamole." It's the real deal and at a low price. I'me very proud of this signature dish.

We've had a number of reviews on websites and magazines, newspapers that we are the best in Thailand and I want to step this up a notch. Please continue to give feedback. Remember you guys ( Thaivisa members) are 10% phantom shareholders. Your comments will continue to help us improve.

  5. Hi All –

I want to buy a new turntable with a good-quality arm and cartridge.

Unfortunately, I only know one shop in Pantip Plaza, is there anyone out there who knows some other suppliers in the Greater BKK area?

    Many thanks in advance.

We had refried beans for inside the burrito for a week at the Suk 12 location. We gave it as a free option and simply found not much demand for it. Haven't given up on it, in the future we will automatically be putting it on the plates in Emporium. On a burrito plate, I just feel it should have refried beans.

So does this mean you will not put refried beans inside the burrito at the Emporium location?

  7. I think in Los Angeles if you are a passenger in a Taxi you are held legally responsible for any thing that happens. the logic goes that the Taxi has been hired by you so therefore the driver has become your employee.

Do not know if this would play in LOS but a falang passenger might be seen as fair game.

    What nonsense

  8. Hi,

Ive done a lot of online reading a searching and think I've found the answer to this question but would appreciate it if someone could confirm.

I had a failed disc fusion on my back in the USA and take Vicodin ( hydrocodone) for pain. I came to BKK and went to Bumrungrad to see a doctor to fill my prescription. He was a nice fellow with passable English but had no idea what hydrocodone ( or percocet aka oxycodone as a replacement when he didn't know hydrocodone). He pulled out his medicine book and couldnt find them under either brand or generic names. i thought this very odd but he handed me the book and browsed thrugh the pain medicine section and sure enough couldn't find it listed under any name. He ended up giving me para+codeine to try as a replacement.

I go back to see him this week as a follow-up and was certain Id find some thai specific name for vicodin or percocet and everything I see seems to indicate they are not available here at all. Is this correct??? It sure seems strange to me. I know some drugs still under exclusive license have their sales restricted but i thought these were old, well known and now generic drugs.

Is there a name Im missing I can use to refer to these or is para+codeine indeed the strongest available pain killer a doctor can prescribe in BKK?

para + codeine seems awful week just to me, I can't imagine what people with cancer and very very bad chronic pain are doing if they are forced to use para + codeine ( setting aside the liver issues with the para if someone were to take many pills to try to get a stronger dose of codeine for relief).

    Thanks for any insight!

Can anything be done about the failed disc fusion or is long term vicodin the only option?

  9. ain't no such thing as 'good mexican food' outside of East LA so get used to a closest substitute...

someone said that Senor Picos at the Rembrandt was acceptable but I say no...it is junk and a disgrace to mexican cuisine worldwide...Senor Pico is a worldwide chain... there was an outlet near my place in Bahrain...sum folks seem to think that 'fajitas' represent the best that mexican cuisine has to offer...bullshed...never heard of 'fajitas' except in the last 20 years. The test of a restaurant was always how they did their chiles rellenos...

there is large scope for an enterprising individual to set up a GOOD mexican restaurant in BKK, but I don't see it happening in my lifetime...

Senor Pico, Bangkok, and Senor Paco's, Bahrain, are not related. Nor are they part of a chain.

They say they are from Los Angeles. I have eaten there and won't go back.

  10. Such as local chili's, onions etc

One I can use to put on tortilla wraps, nacho's etc

Has anybody modified their fave Mexican one yet?

I can't think of anything that's not available in Thailand for a genuine salsa.

Tomatoes, chillies, onions, fresh coriander (cilantro) etc.

This straight of the 'net after a 2 second google.

A fresh and chunky salsa with tomatoes and chile peppers and onions, also known as Pico de Gallo salsa recipe.

    INGREDIENTS:

    * 4 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped

    * 1/2 cup finely chopped onion

    * 2 fresh chile peppers, mild or hot, seeded and finely chopped

    * 2 tablespoons chopped red or yellow bell pepper

    * 1 1/2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh cilantro

    * 1 teaspoon lime juice

    * salt and pepper, to taste

    PREPARATION:

Combine ingredients in a glass or other non-reactive bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

    Makes about 2 cups.

Here's a hot one I picked up in, of all places, Kunming China.

Saute onions and garlic in a little butter or olive oil until soft, add as much finely chopped chilli as you can stand. Add chopped peeled and seeded tomatos, heat through, DO NOT allow to cook. Stir in fresh coriander. I had this with roast chicken originally but now serve it with the German style bratwurst I get in Big C.

    Same as above except:

    -Grill hot peppers first

    -no bell peppers

    -add oregano

    -add balsamic vinegar

    blend in food processor

  11. Today, I applied for my 1 year retirement extension at Siracha and was told I needed a certificate from a doctor. I told them that I thought this was no longer a requirement under the new regulations. They said it was and provided me a one page list of documents required.

    1. TM 7 with photo

    2. Passport with copy

    3. Embassy letter showing pension not less than 65,000 B/M or

    4. Bank letter with not less than 800,000 B or

    5. Combine No.3 and No 4. not less than 65,000 B/M

    6. Certificate from Doctor

  12. Google is your friend. Do a search for reviews on these items before you buy. Also, why a 7.1 system? How many DVD's have you seen coded in 7.1? (more is not better)

For a reference point, go to the Hi-Fi Center in Bangkok and listen to several systems in the shops there.

After you buy a system, make sure it's setup right. (Room accoustics, speaker placement, and speaker calibration)
