  1. I left Thailand over two years ago. I didn't think I would even have to listen to the annoying Thai Tv child like sound effects again. Then we got a Smart TV. Now we have Thai TV again, but it's even worse than before as they have discovered an even more annoying sound than the 'boing' noise. It's like a child crying or an old man whining, and it is of course over used. It's driving me mad! Boing, ping, zip, whaah, boing, zip, whahhh, ping!!!

Do not buy a SMART TV if married to a Thai and outside Thailand, or if you do don't let on that it's possible to get Thai TV :)

  2. Great. I just bought a new Tv which has 3D. I didn't but it for that reason, it was just a bonus. I am however impressed with the few 3D movies I've watched. Mainly kids movies with an underwated Imax movie too. I did find that the 3D effect needs fine tuning quite often to optimise it. Once done the moves are quite fantastic.

  3. Reopening this thread as I am now in the Uk having a bathroom renovated. I thought the information I need was in detail on this forum somewhere but I can't find it.

How do I go about having a functioning bum gun installed? My plumber has never fitted one and has no idea how to over come the water temperature problem. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  4. Hi,

I've been back in the Uk for a few months now and not got around to claiming family allowance. My kids have passports, which we obtained whilst in Thailand, but no British birth certs. Has anyone any advice on how I go about getting them so that I can claim? I remember that when I was in Thailand it was said to be cheaper and easier to do in the Uk I just can't remember how to go about it.

    Thanks

Please move to the appropriate forum.

  5. We relocated to the Uk a couple of months ago. We brought a lot of useful things with us and have found almost everything else is available here. However we forgot to bring the metal pot and wicker hat thing for making sticky rice. I'm sure it must be available somewhere I'm just not sure where. Has anyone any idea where i might find one? I'm sure London will have them in China town, but living in the north east I won't be getting there any time soon.

    Thanks.

  6. I plugged my Thai laptop in the other day and heard a crackling sound and smelt burning. I then saw smoke coming from the plug at the wall. I quickly turned off the power at the socket. Oh dear. I'm in the Uk but the adapter was from Thailand. Just when I thought I'd escaped the poor electrical system I realized that I'd actually bought a little part of it with me. :D I bought a replacement for a pound and all is well again.

  7. Just down wind of me if a chimney that rises up about 60 feet, everyday they get up a good head of steam, everyday its expanded polystyrene(thse little trays you get takeaways in), it stinks and when I say to the G/F they should not be burning that she says to me, you not worry!!!!!!! I tell her it very poisonour gas that it gives off ( cyanide). I tell her it kills Thais to you know not just westerners, but, life goes on here, the burning goes on, maybe its a religeous thing, nothing I can do maybe one day someone important will croak and then maybe.

Round the corner there is a communal fly tipping area, an ahrdly get the lake now, authorities came and put some blocks in front to stop people, they even sat about to deter offenders, had a few cigs then went for tea, never been back, if they did they would see the other side of the road is the new dump, but, then again maybe they would not see it. Maybe we expect to much, I think we would all like the best of the west with best of LOS and it aint going to happen anytime soon is it.

It's the same everywhere. Oh no, sorry it's just where you and me have been. Or that's what others tell me. :D

  8. My wife had a similar thing with Hotmail. They wanted to send a text to unblock her. The problem is the text never came. We just opened a new account with Gmail.

Buying a cheap new SIM is probably the only solution.

  9. I signed up for the quarter marathon today. I got a list of all prizes on offer.

    Marathon

    International Thai

    Men Women Men Women

    200000 200000 70000 70000

However there was only a Thai category for the Half and Quarter marathon. So, they are giving a bigger prize for the full marathon to International runners and nothing for internationals in the other races. It seems they expect a none Thai to win the marathon.

Also, they let me pay Thai entrance rate since I'm married to a Thai. 300 baht entrance for the quarter marathon.

  10. It gets burned regardless here, all I can suggest is you show the woman how to get a hot fire and incinerate it.

Skip ahead to a few days later. Walked down to the tiny beach where I'm building a house. Usually one or two days a week the beach will be littered with garbage (to be washed out by the next high tide) mostly from fishing boats--or fishing boats. There is always bottles and disposable lighters. Sometimes some hospital trash.

    This day was unbeliveable.

Plastics, lighters, shoes, cups, bottles, oil filters, hospital waste such as syringes and vials, a TV--yes, a TV--huge amounts of styrofoam and more. It was impassable. It was in the water, too.

    *sigh*

I took to cleaning a local beach a few years ago here. I found similar things littering the beach to you. The number of tooth brushes, flip flops and straws was amazing, but so was the amount of strange things like electrical components ie started motors, bulbs etc. I gave up in the end.

  11. Getting back to the original question (even though its far less entertaining ), a few couples retire here and remain happily married.

Most retired couples (in my experience) separate fairly quickly once the husband realises he is incredibly attractive to far younger, local women.

However, more often than not (again, in my experience) the wife stays here for whatever reasons.

A tiny number of young Western women come here and stay here, compared to men. Additionally, a fair number of older men come here after a bad divorce - not something many Western women are likely to even think about as Thailand is not known as a wonderful place for women.

Consequently, there are FAR fewer Western women than men that remain here. I'd be suprised if its even 1% Western women to 99% Western men.

I agree with that. Although I said I'd seen a few older women that look like retirees I guess the number is actually about 4 or 5. The number of men I've seen is probably about 4000.

  12. That's terrible. Can you not sit them down and try to talk sense to them?

Hey -- welcome to Thailand. Deal with it.

Listen Thai's will remain stuck with their nonsensical superstitions unless someone teaches them otherwise. You might think it's quaint but it is doing them no good at all.

Yeah, why don' t you start educating the natives, hang on a minute , you married one didn't you ?

Jeez mate, what happened , You come across as a guy that hates all things Thai, yet you live in Thailand and married a Thai. Good planning mate, wish I could plan my life like you.

We have no superstitious paraphernalia in our house, or pictures of he who shall not be discussed in anything but the most glowing light. We don't have a shrine in the garden either, nor do we give any time to the monks. You'll not find a crucifix either though. Nothing bad has happened to us yet.

You are kind of right though about planning. My plans haven't quite worked out, but at least I gave it a go for a few years. If I hadn't tried it I would always be wondering.

And before anyone says it, the door is very soon to hit me on the way out. :D It has been a long time in coming.

  13. I saw a terribly shocking one the other day. A motor bike and home made shop/side car with one man riding the bike and a tiny tiny child sat on the very front edge of the side car with absolutely nothing securing it. As the contraption went over small bumps the child jolted up almost leaving its seat. The kid was probably about 1 year old. I know this does not sound unusual for Thailand and I've seen similar many times but this was much worse. I felt like following them and doing something, but what can you do. I guess they probably got to where they were going in one piece anyway.
