To give a wider, albeit different perspective about the toll of the Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989) & the War in Afghanistan (2001–2021), refer to - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet%E2%80%93Afghan_War https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Afghanistan_(2001%E2%80%932021) In the Soviet–Afghan War, it should be noted that it is estimated that the Soviets & the Mujahideen lost less than 100,000 fighters each killed in action. However, guestimates of civilian casualties (no-one will ever know) are – · Civilians killed ≈ 1-3million · Civilians wounded ≈3million · Civilians displaced externally ≈5million · Civilians displaced internally ≈2million In the War in Afghanistan (2001–2021), which lasted about twice as long, it is estimated that the Coalition lost less than 100,000 fighters, whilst the various Taliban, al Qaeda, ISIL & local Afghan groups lost over 55,000 fighters. Civilian casualties – · Civilians killed ≈ 70,000+ · Civilians wounded ≈200,000 Conclusion: The ones who got their bums booted were the civilians. Do not go to war with the Russians, or the Coalition, in Afghanistan. The ones who made a “killing” (pun intended) were the weapons manufacturers. Note that there is also a very lengthy Wikipedia site devoted to wars involving Russia, & a much shorter one for Thailand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Russia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Thailand I cannot see the point of the Russian visit, who will “engage in joint naval exercises with other Indo-Pacific forces, focusing on enhancing regional security and strengthening maritime partnerships” in an endeavour to emphasize “the importance of maritime security and regional stability” when they are doing nothing of the kind in their Russo-Ukrainian War. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Ukrainian_War It would seem to be a perfect example of hypocrisy at the international level.

Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense: The Path to Lasting Peace
Lapun replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Putin became Prime Minister in Russia from 9 August 1999 – 7 May 2000. Since1999, according to - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Russia . . . there have been wars involving Russia under Putin Dagestan (1999) Chechnya (1999-2009) Georgia (2008) Ukraine (2014-present) Syria - a civil war between Russia, Iran, Hezbollah & Syria versus ISIL, Ahrar al-Sham, Tahrir al-Sham, & the Syrian Opposition (2015-present) Central Africa - a civil war between Russia, the Central African Republic & Rwanda versus the Coalition of Patriots for Change (2018-present) Mali - a war between Russia & Mali versus Al-Qaeda & Islamic State (2021-present) Burkina Faso - a war between Russia & Burkina Faso versus the Jihadist insurgency of Al-Qaeda & Islamic State So Russia will willingly go to war for whatever reason they deem fit. NATO expansionism may have been only part of the reason. But states close to Russia may well have feared for their sovereignty. Strangely enough, the Charter for Eropean Security was adopted on 19 November 1999. Russia was one of the signatories, as was Ukraine I believe. This charter - "reaffirmed the inherent right of each and every participating State to be free to choose or change its security arrangements, including treaties of alliance, as they evolve." See - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Ukrainian_War Russia has not always followed this Charter - 4 violations have been listed under the section "Significance of the Charter" at - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter_for_European_Security Therefore, IMO it would be overly simplistic to blame NATO expansionism for the Putin invaision of Ukraine. -
Why are there so many farang lefties in Thailand
Lapun replied to susanlea's topic in Political Soapbox
You are totally confused by the term "socialist" in the official name of the Nazi Party which was the National Socialist German Workers' Party . According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazism, "Nazism is the far-right totalitarian socio-political ideology and practices associated with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party (NSDAP) in Germany". . . and is "a form of fascism, with disdain for liberal democracy and the parliamentary system. It incorporates a dictatorship, fervent antisemitism, anti-communism, anti-Slavism, anti-Romani sentiment, scientific racism, white supremacy, Nordicism, social Darwinism and the use of eugenics into its creed." I don't think there are any people that could be even further right of that ideology. But I may be wrong. -
Thai Rice Department Scandal: Five Charged with Extortion
Lapun replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I'm confused. Are they accused of extorting money from an official they accuse of being corrupt? If he is corrupt & paid it, why isn't he charged with corruption? The kettle calling the pot black. Why aren't they all charged? -

Wow - a lot of misinformation in this thread. People should really check facts before showing how misinformed they are > The UVF are anti-IRA & were formed to keep Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_Volunteer_Force > The UVF were rather indiscriminate in their actions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Ulster_Volunteer_Force_actions > The Shankill Butchers also had a similar reputation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shankill_Butchers > As did the Red Hand Commandos https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hand_Commando > Northern Ireland is considered part of the United Kingdom & they are entitled to travel under a British Passport - as are many former colonies - as there are different types of British nationality & different types of British passports to match https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_passport Also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Ireland > I presume he did his time for the crimes he was convicted of, & being a suspect in other crimes does not make him guilty of those crimes. So he is a free man - whether or not he is a good or bad man is another question we cannot answer based on the article. > Finally, who cares how old they are? -
Prachuap Khiri Khan ranks 4th for Malaria infections in Thailand
Lapun replied to webfact's topic in Hua Hin and Cha-Am News
According to - https://www.makatimed.net.ph/blogs/malaria-vs-dengue-how-are-they-different/ - the only common factor between the two is that they are both spread by a mosquito bite, albeit from different types. Malaria is spread by an infected female Anopheles mosquito, whereas dengue is spread by the Aedes mosquito. Also, malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite, while dengue is a viral infection. There is a vaccine available for malaria, but it is limited in its use - mainly to children. Refer - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaria_vaccine The tablets referred to by Photoguy21 are prophylaxis. They work by killing the malaria parasite present in the bloodstream. In other words, they only work when you are infected with the malaria parasite. It doesn't stop you from getting malaria (you have to stop an infected mosquito from bitig you to do that), but by killing the parasites in your bloodstream, it reduces the chances of developing full blown malaria. Refer also - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaria https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaria_prophylaxis Dengue is NOT a combination of, or a variation of, any form of malaria. There is no specific cure for dengue. However, according to - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_fever - there are two types of dengue vaccine that have been approved and are commercially available. Again with limited uses. Just to reiterrate, dengue is completely different to malaria. Getting back to the article, it would be helpful to know the percentages of the types of malaria in Thailand, as there are 5 species of Plasmodium that commonly infect humans. The 3 most concerning are P. falciparum (responsible for the vast majority of malaria deaths), P. vivax, and P. knowlesi (a simian malaria that spills over into thousands of people a year). -
Blinken Warns of Chinese Election Interference Amid Tense Relations

Of course I know that. I didn't say the US invaded North America. However I should have said the British, French, Spanish etc. invaded North America as the US didn't exist until later. My mistake for your misunderstanding. But then there are plenty of other colonial powers throughout history. The Right of Conquest is how the invading countries justify pillaging other countries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism -

China has had it's fair share of wars & battles as well . . . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_wars_and_battles -

I suggest all those who believe in the US bulls**t of not interfering in other countries politics read the following: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_regime_change https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_regime_change_in_Latin_America Note that these are only the known involvements. The CIA, other US organizations & businesses will undoubtedly have interferred in many other instances. US expansionism has always been a driving force of US politics since invading North America & stealing it from the local inhabitants. But then that is the way of all colonialist powers. You only have to look at Australia for a perfect example of land theft. -

It would be preferrable to read this before further comments on the Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel at the Christ the Good Shepherd Church. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-16/who-is-bishop-mar-mari-emmanuel-wakeley-church-attack/103728808 The service was being live streamed - hence the immediate response of people rushing to the church. However, the numbers in the news.com.au appear to be exaggerated. Also there were women & youths there as well, but the males were the main violent attackers. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-16/violent-attack-crowd-sydney-church-stabbing-terrorist-incident/103728308 What is sad is that it gives fuel to anti-arab/muslim groups in Australia & around the world.

Australian governor-general to visit Thailand, strengthening ties
Lapun replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
That is an old photo. Julie Bishop (2nd from Right) was Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2013-18 & Marise Payne (4th from Right) took over from 2018-22. Penny Wong is the current one. All they had to do was Google - this is the first image that came up. But really, with the current housing & rental crisis in Australia & exhorbitant rents, allowing "former" resident pensioners to retire gracefully (hopefully not otherwise) in Thailand like pensioners from many other countries would benefit both countries. Then again, stupid regulations are sometimes the hardest to change. After all, the Dept of Social Services is responsible for the Robodebt debacle that went from 2016 to 2020 even though the Dept & Govt knew it to be illegal & with 470,000 wrongly-issued debts which had to be repaid in full. And who was held accountable - not one politician. Only a few public servants. So no, there will be no change, & Chinese vegetables will continue to fill the supermarkets of both countries. But maybe Australia could sell Thailand some of their old submarines, soon to be replaced under the AU$368billion AUKUS agreement (1st subs available 2040 - maybe). This may help recover some of the AU$2.4billion it cost to break the submarine deal with France. Emmanuel Macron famously said when asked if he thought the then Prime Minister Scott Morrison had lied to him (Macron) replied "I don't think, I know." So no, no ex-Australian submarines for Thailand either. Think that covers about all the threads in the above comments. :-)
