  1. I'm wondering how the monorail would be supported while going overhead on Second Road.

Are the going to put big-ass pillars in the middle of the road, like the ones supporting BTS SkyTrain? If so, that'll make it an interesting one-way street.

Are they going to put the supports at the side of the road?

    Or, what?

I haven't seen any design prototype photos.

  2. Sorry, but every time I see this thread on the forum list, I think it says: "Anyone Know Where To Get High"

The first time I saw it, I thought: "Hmm. This thread won't last long." And, now I just had to read it after seeing so many replies.

  3. I read someplace that after the first feeling of awe when you start using a system with an SSD drive, you get used to it to the point that when you subsequently use a system with a standard HDD, you can't believe how slow it is. I've found that to be quite true. My SSD on my home desktop system has spoiled me. And, it's a low end Kingston drive.

  4. The "contention ratio" on what was called "Indy" with TT&T, i.e. the lower-priced non-Premier consumer plans, is 40 or 50. The contention ratio on the Premier plans is 10. I switched from a (at the time) B1000/month 5Mbps Indy plan to a 3Mbps Premier plan for the same price. Difference was night and day. No slow downs on Premier. Only the usual (sadly!) outages on 3BB. When the line is up, it is fast.

When I first got TT&T Indy about five years ago, it was snappy, and I got full speed. Then about two years ago it got slower and slower. My guess is that even though 40 or 50 people (I forget which, now) could share my line, that for the first three years or so, there were far less folks on my line and that finally TT&T got around to adding more and more people and/or people that turned out to be large downloaders? Anyway, that's when I switched from Indy to Premier.

  5. It seems nobody here knows where on Soi 4 this minivan departs or the schedule?

I've currently got a bum back and injured leg, so outdoors exploring is at a minimum. However, I do have an upcoming appointment with my doctor in BKK, and it would be nice to take a minivan from Jomtien direct to Bangkok.

  6. Read in Pattaya today, the guy that says how to fix things, and he said put a tennis ball over the hole, it will float slightly and let the water drain, but will seal the hole when no water present. I thought That was a good idea

Okay, I'm missing something. *Where* do you put the tennis/pingpong ball? Do you remove the drain plate and just let the ball sit there on the naked drain pipe in the floor? Doesn't it float around the shower stall?

The ball definitely wouldn't fit under the drain plate, hence I need some guidance.

  7. How sensitive are you to sounds like, say, a small waterfall in the room, or some other form of white noise? Would they help cover the outdoor noise, or would they make problems with their own noise?

My condo is on the fifth floor facing inward to a garden/pool area. Mainly in high season, but sometimes other times, there are parties that last way past the stated deadline of 1000pm. I turn on the air con on the "fan" setting. It's just enough white noise to cover their party noise.

  8. When I refurbished my bungalow I opted for aluminium fixed frames, that is to say, there are no opening windows, see the pics. By the way since the pics were taken the roof has also been replaced.

Interesting design choice: no opening windows. What was the driving reason to decide that? The only fresh air ventilation is opening the doors?

I'm not criticizing/condemning your choice, I am simply curious why you chose to not have any windows that open.

  9. I probably should have mentioned this when I first asked, but the more likely scenario will be that I will buy a townhouse. Do the same options/benefits apply as they would for a house?

I do not see how a leaseholder of a piece of land can build his own structure that is a townhouse...

Hey, don't laugh at me!

So, with a townhouse, I cannot own the physical structure of the unit I want to buy in my own name (legally), and then lease the ground under it?

I've been curious about townhouses. Those that have a single roof with an open space above all the units -- who is responsible for the "common area" roof? Do you own the structure from the center of one wall to the center of the next wall? Who owns the land the townhouse is on?

  10. Sheryl, I want to do the right things, and safeguard my health. But I'm also a bit of a nervous nellie about hospitals and in particular invasive procedures, including having one done away from my home country where the reason is purely preventative...

I realize you may be apprehensive about someone sliding something up your backside, but there apparently a few options:

    (1) you can be sedated, but still conscious, so you won't freak out

    (2) you can be totally knocked out with anaesthesia, and won't know a thing

    (3) you can do the test un-aided by drugs/anaesthesia and survive to tell the tell

I included option 3, because that's how I did it at BNH Hospital about 5 years ago (which means I'm perhaps over due for another one). I hadn't read these message boards to hear tales of terror from people who had colonoscopies. I was ignorant, just went in, took my trousers/underwear off, put on the hospital gown, laid down, and away the went. They even have a monitor so you can watch the little camera's imgages live. They only disconcerting part of the entire transaction was when they inserted air bubbles. But, after a minute or two, I even got used to that.

That all said, I'm a big sissie with pain. I'm surrently taking 5 types of pills daily for a few things, including a herniated disk. I hate pain. I also squirm at the sight of someone else's blood. But, the colonoscopy was not a bother at all.

    And, of course, YMMV.

Perhaps option (1) might be enough for you?

Oh, I almost forgot: The *worst* part of a colonoscopy is the laxative you have to take 2 or 3 days prior. Boy, does it clean you out! Plan on staying in, because when the urge strikes you *have* to get to a toilet pronto.

  11. My thanks to the OP for asking about IMITREX (Sumatriptan). I don't often get headaches, but when I do, they tend to be doozies. In the past I used to get aspirin or paracetamol with codeine. Canada used to sell "222's" across the counter, and the 222 was the amount of codeine (mg?). Hong Kong also used to sell OTC aspirin/codeine tablets. But those sources dried up, and since then I just suffer my headaches.

    This Imitrex/Sumatriptan is something I might try. <fingers crossed!>

  12. I've used the train Airport-to-Phaya Thai and return several times now. Two suggestions that I have not seen earlier in this thread:

    (1) They should make markings on the floor of the train platforms in Phaya Thai station to indicate where the train doors will be. Right now, with no markings, it's a random mob of people rushing around once the train stops so they can see where the doors are. What I'm talking about is the more organized platform markings on the BTS Skytrain platforms.

    (2) Ventilation on the Phaya Thai platforms is non existent. This past week when I was there, it wasn't even that hot outside, but on the platform the air was oppressive. Way too muggy. I can't imagine what it will be like in May during the hot season.

  13. Just curious, when you had the problem with Cap One, did you show a U.S. address or Thailand address as your address of record on the account? And do you mean they canceled your CO credit card, or CO bank account debit card???

It's been so long now, I'm not sure, but I think it was just a Capital One VISA card, with no savings or checking account. Whatever I had, I got it because it didn't charge a fee for overseas transactions. I don't often have use for a credit card now that I've settled in in Thailand, so I didn't use it within whatever was the required time, and they canceled/close the account. (I do a SWIFT transfer once a year to deposit funds in my Thai bank account, and then pretty much live on a cash basis in Thailand, just using ATM withdrawals from the Thai bank when I need cash.)

As for Schwab, maybe I'll try again. ("If at first you don't succeed...")

I currently have a Fidelity 401k account (which cannot be moved, of course) and a separate Fidelity investment account. When I first tried to open a "Brokerage Link" for my 401k account, i.e. an investment account to play with my 401k money, instead of just the pre-determined mutual funds, they declined my application since I lived overseas and had no USA address. This past spring, I decided to just print out the application form (from their web site) and mail it in. Voila! About a month later, I had a Brokerage Link. Go figure. But, based on that experience, I should try Schwab again. I'm not very satisfied with Fidelity.

  14. Double crikey! I missed the part where he banned members from bringing their own water. At least that's some compromise. Wonder what he'd say about me bring a 5-litre bottle with me?

  15. Has anyone seen the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive in Thailand? Looks like pricing in the USA is down to about $100 for the 250GB version. Looks like a decent fit for a notebook drive, and I've read several favorable reviews for the drive.
