  1. The most important visa is your work visa, as long as you get that ok you will be fine.

The depandant passes are issued very quick and I doubt you will have trouble for the wife or her child.

Your wife would not be able to work on a depandant pass unless she has a letter of consent which your work could probably get for you.

BTW - all the visas in Singapore can be obtained quickly especially if you register online. Whole process online can be done in days!

  2. Looking at the website recommended it looks like the depreciation is better that 50,000.....

I see a 2009 vios for 460,000. Brand New the Vios start at over 600,000.....

Vios starts at 499,000 according to the Toyota website.

    You are right..

However I can see from the picture that this one is the basic auto which starts at 549,000. So the saving is 90,000. Depreciation should be bigger than that. This dealer looks to be expensive.

On the new car side I was offered the free insurance and I think 10,000 off the price and 10,000 worth of extras. That was on a Toyota Vios 1.5G A/T from the Pearl Toyota dealership which has a list price of 664,000. Any ideas how much further they would be willing to drop to make a sale. Without finance. I did not think it was a great reduction, as the insurance would be offered nationwide I think and so they would get a good rate from the insurance co. The extras 10,000 is not great and only 10,000 cash!!!

But I don't know where I should be countering, top of my head says I should want a discount package of probably 50,000 but not sure if I am way off the mark on that....?

  3. Depends on what you want to buy?

If it was a small Honda or Toyota then a 1 year old would make little scene........ maybe you could save 50,000 baht..

new you would maybe find one with extras free even 1 years insurance free, so would cancel out the 50k savings + you would have a new 1st owner car.

  4. Anyone else find these on going land issues boring now?

I mean over the past 2-3 months there has been blowups in the press one day and then next day someone else says no problem.

Someone claims 90% of beach land owned by farangs. Next day land dept says it's all owned by Thai.

Next day some governor says loopholes are being exploited, oh boy really! Next he makes amazing claim that 30 years is along time!!

But in all the only thing is either you remaining owning 49% of the company or you actually get married not buy a fake document. Apart from that it is all legal........There is no news in this story...

  5. Does it exist?

I am thinking about buying a car, but might go for 2nd hand if I can get something decent.

Say 1 yr old, sold with a warrenty for a year at least.

Is it possible or are all the 2nd hand cars deathtraps?

Anyone who could reccommend a dealer?

Is there a car breakdown service in Thailand, silimar to AA or RAC?

    Thanks

  6. I hate that Tourism makes up only 6.5% of GDP arguement. Industry makes up 49% GDP but only employs 14% of the workforce.

Tourism is probably the biggest employer in Thailand (directly or indirectly) I am sure the real number is not know. Thailand Tourism also makes up the largest contribution to the economy than any other Asian nation.

Tourism is a major benefactor to the economy in Thailand and revenues are projected to be down 22% compared to last year.

Closing bars for a weekend when only 2,000 locals can be bothered to vote helps no one!

  7. I see plently of people buying in Phuket for one.

The market is tiny compared to the US and as others have said why should a trend in the US housing market apply to Thailand. I just brought cash in Phuket and all around me all the other new builds were sold before they were finished. All sold to Thai's. Not sure how many mortgaged how many cash, but they all went quick sharp.

The resell market does look pretty dead, new builds still appear to be selling (at least in Phuket).

I think really you just have to save some more money mate

  8. There is not much there at all.

Best bet for nightlife would be head to Hat Yai......neither Songkhla or Hat Yai are any more dangourous then anywhere else, although I would not fancy going further south....

4-5 days on Songkhla, well I have managed only a couple of single overnight stays there in the past and unless I have too, won't hurry back

  9. The island is surrounded by white elephants and dreamers projects..

The shells that look out over Kata south.. Another one on the Kata / Chalong hilltop.. Thats without ones that simply are bad investment plans and go bust.

One man's bad investment could be another man's opportunity!

  10. In one room I have my computer etc, stuff I consider valuable.. I want to be able to put some basic cheap peel on the windows so that I can see out yet no one can see in (or at least not clearly) and hopefully lets a good amount of sunlight through as well, the window of this room faces out to quite a few other houses so if I can avoid advertising that this would be a good place to rob all the better. Anywhere sell this? or can suggest something else pratical?

This room has no air con unit. In bangkok in one of the guesthouses I seen a portable freestand plug in air con unit (say 1m height by 20cmx20cm), do they sell them here? what price?

Is there an office depot or staples or something on the island, for stuff like whiteboards, monitor stands, etc.. I've had a look at Big C & Tesco but not impressed.

Portable Air Con- look around but they are hard to come by.

Why do you want portable? You tend to be able to get a wall unit cheaper and installed cheaper and the don't take up all the space.

  11. You don't need a 4x4

If you want to go off the island on the ferry you need to check with the renter that it is ok. Budget rent a car you can do this for example but a lot of the jeeps you cannot.

If you want to stay on the island then a jeep is fine and can handle the conditions. Just take it easy around the bikes in the built up areas. Spending extra won't necessarily get you a better car. I once paid extra for a nice looking SUV and the steering was shot to bits!

and remember - nothing handles better than a hire car! opps bit reckless I know!! :)

  12. As has been said it only works if by live in Thailand you mean Bangkok or Phuket. Both of which have daily budget flights that you can do this.

I have a house in Phuket and live in Singapore and fly between the two everyother weekend. Family travel with me for the most part but at times are in Thailand and I am in Singapore.

Advantage of Singapore is it is easy to get a job with most being able to speak English, they 'Welcome' foreign talent and the money is good compared to LOS. Disadvantge is it is not very big, pretty expensive and you have to fly to LOS.

But if by LOS you mean anywhere but Bangkok or Phuket it is just not really workable.

  13. If flying from bangkok you can do Tiger, AirAsia or JetStar

AirAsia would be my choice, but they are all much of a muchness and what you see is what you get. So go with the cheapest, and if they are both the same price then AirAsia.

I have travelled all 3 loads of time without issues, although Tiger can be late on occassions.

  14. From the BBC:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8108859.stm

Thailand's exports slumped by more than a quarter in May - a record fall - as demand for Thai goods overseas continued to drop during the downturn.

Exports fell by 26.6% compared with a year earlier, to $11.7bn (£7.1bn). Imports dropped by 34.7% to $9.3bn.

"Exports to key markets were all lower due to weak demand and intensifying competition," the government said.

The Thai economy, which is suffering from its worst recession in decades, is heavily dependent on exports.

And analysts believe the country's exporters, which account for more than 60% of Thailand's entire economic activity, will continue to suffer.

"It is less likely there will be a strong rebound in Thai exports in the near future as demand for imports of raw materials has not picked up yet," said Suara Wilaipich at Standard Chartered Bank.

The Asian economy has been hit hard by the global economic downturn but also by political unrest at the end of 2008.

  15. It's in out out Multi Entry for 6 months, these are what are issued and you can use it anytime in the 6 months.

No need to tell anyone at the embassy anything.

However keep your dates etc of all the trips and put them on the next application, I also put a copy of previous applications and entry stamps in the new application to add a little weight.

I just got the wife a new fmaily visa. No hassles and was done in 2 days! :)

  16. samuisole - if you go the company route a lot of people have and had no problems. however there are pitfals. You need to file accounts, hold meetings, etc. etc. you need to have an accountant who you can rely on to run this company. Also a company needs 7 directors and 51% ownership is Thai. it is not a perfect solution, although plently of people have done it and not suffered a problem.

If you want to be safe, buy a Condo, You can own the freehold as long as no more the 49% of the entire Condo block is foreign owned.

If you want a house on land you can buy a lease for 30 years. Anymore than that is nonsense. the 30+30+30 is not legal in thailand

If you are not happy with 30 years then just rent. Your advantage is you can walk away!!!!!
