  1. I am planning a trip down to Oz and need a bit of advice over which hotels in Syd and Mel are decent for reasonable amounts of cash (between $100-$150 per night)? Ones preferrably that won't be filled with backpackers!! :o

I want central hotels not stuck in the middle of nowhere - I know Sydney pretty well but not the hotels, but I've never been Melbourne.

    Any advice greatly recieved..

    Cheers

This site www.wotif.com is apparently offering special room rates for the Clarion Suites Sothern Cross on Darling Harbour

  2. When there's nothing else to talk about talk about the weather. Actually, I'm curious as to what the weather is like way up there nowadays. Are you getting any rain or is it bone dry. Bangkok had some rain over the last few weeks. We've got lots of clouds but little is falling. They say will lots of dust in the air rain tends to take longer to fall but when it does it really comes down. Although I've lived in Thailand for quite some time I'm a bit confused as to where the rain comes from. In central thailand it seems to come from Burma or the Andaman. I would think that the clouds over Bangkok would head east to Cambodia or Esarn . Where does Esarn get its rain from?

The rains in SEA at this time of year come from the Indian Ocean Monsoon which runs from May to Oct and travels in a westernly to east direction, however maybe this year it's gone the other way as England has just recorded the wettest June on record! On a serious note it could have something to do with El nino or the other one La nina for more info on this read here (Reuters)

  3. See if you can grab yourself a bit of fat ass farang why your out here! :D

why grab a "bit of fat ass farang" in the UK when there are plenty fat ass, flabby assed, beer-bellied men in Thailand he can choose from here already? :o

Men? Oh sorry I didn't realise.

Nothing wrong with me liking shapely women is there?

Liking women is a very good idea, but is there any particular share you are referring to? "Sack of spuds" shape for example?

Oh lord no! I'm not one of those blokes who likes large women. I was speaking of just western women in general, if you was coming back to England after a long spell in Thailand and you was single and not happily married like your avatar suggests then you may fancy a change like.

  5. I've checked on all of the 'deals' that are being offered and it's frustrating, here on the airasia site: air asia 'deals' it says flights are B199 from BKK-CM but they're not, they're actually just over B3,000 for a return ticket...

Now I'm not so stupid as to think I'd get a flight for B3(as advertised by Nokair) or B199(advertised by airasia) but I do find it a little bit offensive that the 'deals' being offered are complete bullsh1t :o

    Why are these lies allowed?

Check the air asia site in the link above and tell me where I can actually purchase the ticket for that price, any ticket!

Sorry to piss on your chips like but every mid week flight I did a search for Bangkok to Krabi in Sept. was costing 199 baht!

It's one way and before tax of course but otherwise it is still very cheap.

Edit: Likewise for Chiang Mai aswell!

My chips taste a bit pissy now..

After further investigation I am now inclined to agree with you. A 400 baht fuel supplement on a fare of 199 baht is a bit much. It is safe to say that we have all come to expect paying airport tax on top of a "base fare" but when it comes down to having to pay an extra fuel supplement which is double the basic fare.. now that's farking cheeky. There shouldn't be such a thing as a fuel supplement anyway as all that should be calculated into the basic fare..

  7. We are not into nightlife - somewhere quiet and reasonably priced is preferred.

    Peter

well, then forget SAMUI immidiately and book your 99 Baht -flight with AirAsia to Krabi :o

There is other beaches on Samui other than Chaweng and Lamai ya know!

There's plenty of reasonably priced quiet places to stay on Samui.. Anyway I'd recommend as you say krabi, 2 weeks should be about right if include koh lanta, koh jum, au nang, hat railay, koh poda and not to forget koh phi phi. If you decide on visiting phi phi which you should as its magnificant, a good option for a beach to stay is hat yao (long beach) which is away from the developed ton sai area but close enough if you fancy a night out. There is great snokeling straight off hat yai, and I can recommend Phi Phi Hill Resort for large bungalows with excellent views over ton sai bay and phi phi lay. I have to mention the steps here though as there is 200 or so but if you have no waking difficulties and take your time it's not too bad.

  8. not for me

    >dangerous drivers in the extreme, falling asleep at 3/4am and wandering into oncoming traffic a number of times with me the only one awake yelling at the driver, all the thais in slumberland, me a nervous wreck.

    >time warp 300ks in 8hrs? zigzag? once we were on a dual highway and for no apparent reason the driver would travel at 40kmh for a few ks then speed up to 130 and then repeat, had me baffled, no traffic good roads etc..

    >horrible dirty airco blowing, you seen the black crap around the outlets, blow your nose after 8 hrs on one, soot factory.

    >blarringly loud TV music, nothing new there!

planes or trains or cars or bikes even

I hate flying, especially short distances where you end up spending ages waiting around in airports not traveling anywhere. If your ever thinking of flying from BKK to CM I would seriously consider taking a V.I.P bus instead which I almost found enjoyable!

The seats are massive and you have loads of space, they also recline enough so you can sleep easily. The food on the bus is not as good though so make sure you stock up before you leave the bus terminal. Half way you stop and get off the bus for a stretch and some great Thai food which comes included in the ticket. The Long routes are nearly all overnight so you can have a good sleep and not miss any holiday time.

    Jake

    back ot

    long haul is ugly

Melb to Bkk is as far as I want in any one trip.

Bangkok to Chiang Mai, it's deffinetly got to be a first class sleeper on the night train. Can never get to sleep on the bus, the roads too bumpy, air conditioning is to harsh and that tv show they always have on (5 buffoons on a stage) dont know what it's called but it farkin cracks everone up, what's it all about and getting woken up from pretending to sleep to go and buy something from the bus drivers sisters shop in Pitsanulok or wherever? Nope, it's got to be the gentle rock of the night train.

  9. I'm going to stay home for a couple of years. I've used up my FF miles anyway, and it's not worth the hassle. I'm glad we took the trip to Angkor Wat by land, even though it was rough and lengthy.

Make your mind up, after your Angkor Wat escapade you told us you wish you had flown instead!

  10. My wife educated, was 22 when we first met and got married when she was 25. She was a virgin, educated from a good Thai university, holds a degree, and now works for Thai Airways. She's from Rayong. The family demanded 100,000. I paid 60,000 and she paid the remainder. Because I wasn't going to pay more than 60,000 no matter what....

These are roughly the current prices:

100,000 for an educated virgin with a degree.

60,000 for an educated virgin with a degree who works for Thai Airways and is from Rayong.

60,000 for a shop girl with high school and also a virgin.

30,000-40-000 for a divorced single mother

0 for a divorced single mother (ex bargirl)

0 for a non-virgin bargirl or ex bargirl

    Your menu needed amending :o

  11. A big zero for you I'm afraid. It is possible to go to Siam Reap from Si Saket via Kantharalak but this is very much a pick up ride and a rough one at that. Khao Pra Wihan just over the border is a much less visited Khmer ruin as its almost inaccessible from the Cambodian side...google it, good trip from Si Saket. Your not going to find any organised trips from where your going to Ankor, and certainly not on the net, and your best route in would probably be from Aranya Prathet, easy to catch a bus there and continue to Ankor.

Thanks for the information, I was already suspecting that we would need to take the route v

ia Aranya Prathet. Didn't know about Khao Pra Wihan, will look it up.

Take the bus to Chong Jom and then hire a taxi at the border to take you to Siem Reap see Tales of Asia for accounts of this journey.

Actually I've done this and also emailed it to Tales of Asia above. reason I didn't recommend it was the OP said he was going in Summer and wanted a comfortable trip. Its far from comfortable at the best of times but it can be a nightmare during the summer (rainy season) with many bridges washed out. I was that way last summer also and the tout situation has worsened (and that was with 2 Khmer speakers with us). Up to the individual I guess.... :o

Roamer, did you do the trip on August 22nd last year by any chance?

No. It was around the end of July if I recall correctly. So it wasn't me you met!!

Reading the accounts on Tales of Asia I could only see one from last summer and that was from a guy who did the Chong Jom - Siem Reap trip on 22-aug-06. Apparently his journey took him 5 hours on a muddy pot-holed dirt road which is what i'd expect from Poi pet aswell (in summer)? He does end his write-up with "all in all the trip was very nice" but as you say it's all up to the individual isn'it?

  12. At the moment I am on book 14 of a series of 21, written by Patrick O' Brian, about the lives of Stephen Maturin and Captain Jack Aubrey. The first book being 'Master and Commander'.

    Patrick O'Brian....absolutely marvellous.

I never read anything in a particular order, but have read "A Wine Dark Sea" and "H.M.S. Surprise" and others by him. I'm not a sailor, could care less about the difference between a mizzen and jib sail- but the way he crafts a story, creates tension, and resolves it, all with an overlay of perfect historical accuracy, is breathtaking.

Probably one of the finest historical novelists ever! :o

    McG

I'm just ploughing through 10 of his books now. Once you start reading one you seem to travel back in time to his era. It's a bit unnerving when you put the book down and find that it's 2007 :D

Agreed, it's great coming across a Maturin/Aubrey when I'm in Thailand.. I've tried reading them back here but it's just not the same without me hammock and a sea breeze!

Another good historical novel with nautical theme is English Passengers by Matthew Kneale.

  13. Actually, I read on the Manchester thread that the local Manchester folks have taken to call him "Frank," on radio talk shows after Frank Sinatra, because they can't pronounce any of his names.

    Shinawatra - Sinatra.

Narrgh, it's because he resembles Frank Sidebottom :o
