  1. Cheers

    Appreciate help with this question.

My Non Imm "O" visa from Thai Consulate in the USA to visit friends/family expired August 15th. I made an exit/re-entry on August 14th and am on my last 90 day stamp that expires November 11th. I would like to extend my stay based on retirment.

I deposited over 800K BHT in a passbook savings on July 27th this year and meet the age qualification for 50+.

Can I apply for retirement visa extension now ?

    Thanks

    DD

  2. Is this just for cable user's and not those that can only use a satellite dish as my understanding is that if you have cable you currently get 11 HD channels where as with satellite we only get 3 of which 1 is Thai and what about gold subscribers what do they get !!!!

I have just seen a message on my TV from Truevisions that says BOTH 'platinum' satellite and cable users WILL receive all 17 channels free of charge!!!!

The wife jus got back from the True office in CR and they said if we sign up for Platinum package it includes HD channels at no extra charge for as long as we sucribe. There is a refundable deposit of 2K BHT for the box and we get one month free. Gold package you have to pay 290 BHT/month extra for the HD channels.

We are up country on Satellite and True office in CR said Satellite customers will only be able to get the currently availalble 3 HD channels for the forseeable future.

  3. Yes you can get a new 90 day stay with any entry prior to expiration. You could also extend any stay for 60 days at immigration without financials on basis of having Thai wife (she would have to go with you). Retirement is much preferred and less paperwork for everyone if you can use those financials to qualify for extension (but you can not work on such extension).

Thanks for your help with this and for all the great advice over the past 10 or so years.

  4. Hi

I have a one year multi non-O issued from Thai Consulate in the USA for visiting family/friends. It expires August 15th 2012. If I exit and re-enter Thailand just before visa expiration and get a fresh 90 day stamp that will be good until mid November, can I then apply to extend based on retirement or marriage in November before the fresh 90 day stamp expires ? I am married to Thai, over 50, and have the funds for either marriage/retirement but in a Certificate of Deposit that matures in July, so do not have enough time to season the money in a passbook savings account before Visa expiration on August 15th.

    Cheers and Thanks

  5. I have used my Thai drivers licence many times when crossing into Burma with VIP pass. Last time was about 3-4 weeks ago. For some reason Burma immigration will not accept US currency $10 dollars when entering with VIP pass but they will accept US currency when officially entering the country with passport/stamp Etc. A few months ago the Duty free shop on the bridge renovated the interior and now have a wider selection of single malt whiskeys, Etc.

BTW, Have bought many bottles of excellent wines and spirits in Taichalek for years and never once had a problem with a knockoff.

  6. Hi Gent and Ladies

I am arriving in Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight from Manila on Friday afternoon and have a connecting flight (3 hours later) on Thai Airways to Chiang Rai. Question. Would like to check bags in Manila through to Chiang Rai and transit BKK clearing customs at Chiang Rai. If I do this will I be able to buy Alcahol at BKK Duty Free and hand carry it on the domestic flight to Chiang Rai. I have three hours between flights so I have time to clear immigration/customs in BKK, purchase Alcahol at Duty Free, pack it in my luggage and check at domestic counter for flight to Chiang Rai. Would rather not have to clear customs in BKK but will if I have to in order to get a few bottles of scotch. Cheers and thanks in advance if someone can advise.

  7. Hi, I would like to extend a one year non-o visa based on retirement. Current Visa expires on May 3rd. I understand all the requirements except the criminal history record. Been a few years since I did a retirement visa and not familiar with this doc. Just got in the country on May 1st and do not want to waste a trip to Mai Sai on Tuesday if i cannot provide all documents as visa expires on that day. Is this form required or is it discretionary? Will be going with my Thai wife and son for the family effect.

    Cheers,

Try Han's deli behind DaVinci. He has a nice Gorgonzola for I think a reasonable price. The only problem is my son loves it and wolfs it down b4 I get a chance. Back to the mall. I Ike it and look forward to the Cinaplex getting some decent movies, not to mention the incredible scenery that is all free.

  9. It is helpful to keep your old passport if you have visas to other countries. I have a new passport waiting to be picked up at the US embassy. Current pp has 3 years left but is running out of pages and have already had the maximum allowed page inserts. I have active multi-entry visas for both India and China in the old passport, was told by Chinese immigration to bring the old passport with visa (and new one) and will be no problem to enter China. Not sure about India and not sure about current Thai one year visa. Does having your old and new passport help with the following issues.

-Does Thai immigration transfer my one year visa from old to new passport? Multi-enty non O issued in the USA by Thai consul in Boston. Expires in May and plan to extend based on retirement ?

-Do I need to have my Thai car and motorcycle liscense changed to reflect new pp number?

-Do I need to have green books changed for the motorcycles I own ?

-Do I need to visit Thai banks ?

Thanks for the good info in this thread as my new passport is currently waiting to be picked up in CM consul but was unsure about what I have to do after the new one is issued.

  10. Hi Mates

This is a strange one and very much appreciate any advice since time is short.

My 6 year old son was born in Thailand and holds both US and Thai passports. He has never travelled to the USA, but my 86 y/o Mother is ill so I booked tickets for him and I to fly to the US departing on January 21st for a 10 day visit. The R/T tickets are booked and paid for and today while getting some things together I noticed that my sons Thai passport expires on the day we depart BKK, January 21st. Will we be able to depart and return on his US passport and sort out the renewal of his Thai passport when we return in 10 days or is there a problem. Since I just discovered this today we only have Tuesday-Thursday to try and resolve issues if any. Is there a problem or are we good to go? Air tickets are non-refundable and my Mom is not well and would like to see her Grandson for the first time before things get worse. Any advice or help is very much appreciated in advance as I do not have experience travelling abroad with my 6 y/o son. BTW, am married but my Thai wife is not going on the trip with us since this was all done on short notice.

    Cheers

I bought a new (chipped) Wii game system for my son at Central in Chiang Mai last December. It was modified (chipped) so it accepts all games, regardless of where they are bought or if they are copied. Very happy with the system. I think it was about 10,000 BHT with a bunch of games including the sports package. If you need the name of the shop I could probably dig up the receipt with name and phone number.

  13. Does anyone know what king of bike Dennis? was riding to Mae Chan the other day. Could put my feet on the ground, so I may want to take a look.:whistling:

Garry have a good one. See you on the flip side.

    Hi Scorpio

Concur with Sven's reply and have to say the Honda Degree is the most fun for the money item I have purchased in Thailand to date. Although after seeing Dave's BMW on the Sunday ride I am keeping my eye out for a BMW 650GS to add to the toy collection.

    Cheers

    Dennis

Dennis maybe what you should have said is that its the best fun you can have with your clothes on for the money :licklips: although i have seen you have lots of fun for a lot less money, OK it may involve the odd Tequila or two but fun non the less.

Jubby i have a KLX, if you fancy a blast to see what you get for the money you are welcome.

    BSACBOB

Surely you must have me confused with another Dennis.

BTW. I dont think you can go wrong with either the KLX or the Degree. Both are fun bikes. Part of my decision was based on having done business with ST motorcycles for years. Reliable local shop in CR. If anyone wants to take a blast on the Degree let me know.

I've hired the degree and xr250 and they are both fun bikes but for the same price as a 8-10yr old ex-hire bike with many km's on the clock you can get a nearly new KLX250 with low km and for just another 25k baht a brand, spanking new one with 2yr warranty. Worth considering if anyones looking.

I hear you Stu and I looked at the K but did not hear good things about performance so I opted for the rebuilt Degree imported from Japan with a one year warranty from the local shop in CR. JMHO

  16. Hi Cobra, here're the steps to generate an installer for Mapsource from compiled IMG:

    1. First you need to download and install GMapTool and cGPSmapper (both are free).
    2. At GMapTool Options page, point to "cgpsmapper.exe" (refer image below).
    3. At Files page add IMG file.
    4. At Split page, browse and select folder to split files to, select "Create: files for Mapsource", tick "Compile preview map", click "Split selected".
    5. IMG should have been successfully split with all necessary files saved at the selected folder (check log for errors, if any).
    6. Browse to split folder and run "install.bat" (and follow the instruction to proceed with installation) to install mapset into Mapsource. Once installed, the folder/files should not be moved/deleted. Later if needs to be uninstalled, run "uninstall.bat".

    gmaptool-o.gif

    Note:

    • However, by using this method, "Find Places" feature (in Mapsource) will be disabled, and only "Find Nearest Places" (for POIs) would work when using this mapset.
    • If you are using a locked IMG file (which I assume is associated with a legit unlock code), the same unlock code for device needs to be used in Mapsource to unlock the mapset.

    Hi DVPRO

Worked like a charm for loading SEA NT into mapsource. Have been wrestling with this for awhile. Many thanks.

  17. There's seems to be more to the story than what has been described thus far. It's the responsibility of the airlines to ensure that passengers have a visa for the country they are travelling to and/or to ensure that the destination country offers VOA to the passenger, this is pretty much universal and would be unlikely to involve the police. Having previously lived in China for a few years I have arrived and departed a number of their airports and in China, just as in many other countries, the process of passport inspection and ticketing/visa check are very separate. So you say that Immigration Police prevented her from boarding so that suggests that she was issued a ticket and by default, passed the test for having a visa for her destination - the fact that the IP got involved after the ticket was issued suggests there may be other factors involved here.

Agreed. I lived and worked in China for 4 years and travelled on numerous occasions to Thailand with Chinese nationals for both business and pleasure. There was never a problem for my Chinese friends to travel without a visa. There is definitely more to this story. Just a comment about Chinese immigration, they are much more consistent than Thai immigration when it comes to obtaining residency visa and work permits.

  18. Hi All

Have been living/working in Shanghai past 4 years and just had knee reconstruction surgery for torn ACL and meniscus in October. I have been seeing an excellent physical therapist in Shanghai but will be moving back to Chiang Rai after the new year. Physical therapy is key for recovering from this type of surgery. Can anyone recommend a good physical therapist in either Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai ? Not worried about cost since I am covered by Cigna International, more concerned about the quality of care and knowledge of recovery from this type of surgery.

    Cheers and thanks in advance.

  19. Have seen no specific reports about Non-O visa from this consulate, but another poster had no difficulty obtaining Non-B visa some time back. Suspect as as Shanghai resident you will not have difficulty obtaining single entry Non-O visa. Suggest you take with your marriage certificate, copy of wife’s ID card plus bank book showing some funds and also a short letter from wife addressed to consulate requesting the issue of the visa.

Once in Thailand you can obtain re-entry permit (1,000 baht single entry; 3800 baht multiple entry) from local immigration office which will preserve your 90 day permission to stay obtained on entry. If you are staying in Bangkok you will need to visit the new immigration office at Chaeng Wattana

If you need more information on documents/process to apply for extension of stay then let us know.

Thanks Thaiphoon. Will probably exit to Burma and Laos from Chiang Rai Province so I assume Mai Sai Immigration will be where I apply for the re-entry permits. Cheers. Will let you know how I make out at Shanghai Consul. Since technically Shanghai is my home country of residence I am going to try for a multi one year non imm O based on family but will settle for a single 90 day.

  20. Have been a resident in Shanghai for 4 years and plan on returning to LOS next month for long term again. I plan to get a 90 day non imm O single entry visa in Shanghai. I am married to a Thai national and will extend my stay based on marriage or retirement but need to season money. Meantime my son is visiting and we plan to visit Laos and Burma. Can I get re-entry permit/s to protect my 90 day O visa? If so where do I get the re-entry permit/s? Cheers.... Have never dealt with Thai Consul in Shanghai. If anyone has would appreciate comments. Cheers...

  21. Start charging for plastic bags. Problem solved.

Yes, the move was extremely successful in Ireland, where it went nationwide many years ago. Nowadays, everyone has carrier bags in their car. The only people you see actually paying for plastic bags are usually embarassed to be doing so.

I have very strong doubts the Irish model will work here in Thailand!

It's worked very well in Shanghai, China. Since charging .3 yuan for a plastic bag over the past year vitually everone carries their own re-usable bags when shopping. :o
