  1. Thx for all the replies guys. I understand that when an OP says it is a friend who wants to know, we assume it is the poster who is the real one with the problem, but in this case it really is a friend and when I told him its risky, he left it with me, gave me 100$ and asked me to mail it to him. So now my question isn't about taking it in the baggage, it's about mailing it. Lol

Removing any Buddha image from Thailand without the proper paperwork is a criminal offense. Wether it is taken by you in luggage, or mailed, you are taking a risk and breaking the law. If the officer on duty and dealing with your luggage or posted parcel is in the right mood, and does not get the paperwork, you could go to jail.

well, we all know that this is thailand and THAIS get differential treatment in many areas - for instance, my friends thai wife with american passport, who chooses to stay in thailand as a USA citizen, when she goes to immigration to do her 90 day report and yearly renewal, gets much faster and easier processing of her documents... anyways... i suspect that given the numbers of Thais who go to reside abroad for any period of time, that the taking of family buddhas (talking SMALL ones here, not big interior/exterior home "decorations") would be permitted, formally or informally.

I was just looking to see if there is some official position on the issue.

finally decided to open the horse's mouth and count the teeth, instead of speculation.

Called up the local authority here in CM and they said the wife needed to certify and get certificate for her 3 main (about 6-8 inches each) house buddhas, but all the amulets and smaller icons that she has gotten from temples all over thailand, do not need to be submitted for certification.

so, taking pictures and going to the national museum to get clearance. End of drama for the wife and me

  3. any more news of availability of Harvoni in thailand? CM in particular?

I checked many online HepC blogs and some folks are purchasing the two components out of China, but as powders and then having

    to mix into capsules themselves.

Still no news (that i can find) re: generic harvoni out of india...

PM me If u still looking for Generic Harvoni in Thailand. i have contact details where can get.

thanks, but i flew to Bangladesh on Nov 5, got my 24 weeks of generic Harvoni, completed my 6 months of treatment and am happy to report the virus is undetected in my system - so my 48 yr love affair with HepC has come to an end!

What does the total course cost there compared with the 100,000 USD plus that jaideeguy quoted?

Cost of medication for 24 weeks (most tx is 12 weeks, but mine was longer) was 1800 USD for all the meds. For average user (12 weeks) cost was 1,100 USD total...then air fares, one night hotel.

I have helped 2 friends, since then, purchase the same meds (twinvir) in BKK for about 54,000 baht for 12 week course...

  5. when we moved to US from BKK about 15 yrs ago...the wife put her "family buddhas" in her carry on... they are a few small statues, none over 6 inches tall. She is Thai and has had these her whole life. Also several amulets given to her by her brother, a long time monk.

anyways.. i know there is a lot more signage about this issue these days. The wife says it is crazy for her to have to go to a govt. building and get her personal, family, small buddhas "certified" so she can take them out this time, as we are moving back having been here for 7+ yrs this time round.

anyone care to comment on their personal experiences with a thai taking small personal buddhas out? I think she will be OK.... but TIT>..

  6. a few years ago i was standing in line to check in at SFO for a flight for my daughter's wedding in Italy. All of us were going to Paris first with Air France and had our tickets. While in line to check in, they announced the flight was cancelled. NO refunds... but they would get us out the next day on available flights and paid our hotel. So we lost a very expensive night in Paris, got a cheap ass motel near SFO and the next day, the whole wedding group flew out on 4 different airlines, thru 4 different cities (non of them air france) and eventually we all arrived in Paris very late into the night of our second expensive hotel.

I fumed, raged, wrote letters etc... contacted IATA and so on... and got nothing... was quoted chapter and verse of the damn agreements and was told since we did not claim refund of ticket and had accepted their alternative bookings (it was summer and we were lucky to get out to paris the next day at all for a reasonable price ), since taking a refund and paying full fare on another airline was just throwing money away... i tried to get them to pay for our lost nights in Paris... no such luck...

it's a dog eat dog world out there and you are just a bone that gets chewed on..

FWIW... voted with my feet and never taken Air France again...

  7. I just ordered an office chair from Bangkok: the Herman Miller Aeron ergonomic office chair. I spend a good deal of time (probably much more than others) sitting in front of my computer, and I am determined to invest in the very best chair available. Others have different priorities and different budgets. Just my thoughts.

i agree. the aeron chair is 'the' best chair ever made and has a price tag to match. I'm sitting in one now. i bought mine wholesale 17 years ago and it's followed me from the states, to bali and now here.

    attachicon.gifhero_aeron_chair_3h.jpg

I also bought a herman miller aeron chair... like 12 years ago in USA and brought it with me here to Thailand. Never had a problem with it (not the chrome model featured). I am leaving back to USA in June... and will be selling then. If you are interesting and can wait, give me a shout and you can come over and see it. Brand new in BKK they are pushing 40K for the lumbar support ones like mine. I will be selling for 20K or best offer... in mid june

  8. We've had this discussion this week already. You can ship a new Kindle from Amazon to Thailand as long as it is not the ad-supported model. You can ship an ad-supported brand new one for less money using a seller on Ebay selling brand new ones. Postage on ebay includes taxes in Thailand. The ad-network doesn't function in Thailand.

what is meant by "ad supported" brand. I have a kindle (as does my daughter) and both show book ads every time we turn it off. The ads change regularly, so i just assume it is doing it thru the wi-fi connection.

is there some other ad based system that i am successfully avoiding?

  9. I scanned the photo page (both sides) of my passport into my computer and reduced it in size with Photoshop to credit card dimensions.

I printed it out, laminated it, rounding the corners so it looked a bit more 'professional,' and have since used it at least three dozen times when asked by police, as well as banks, rental agencies, even airport and bus ticket counters, etc., etc., everywhere OTHER than immigration, and never had a problem being accepted.

Apart from a copy of your passport, you would need a copy of the TM7, visa stamp, 90 day? Anything else to cover all of the bases?

Will all of that info fit on 2 sided reduced page and still be legible?coffee1.gifwai.gif

To date, I've never needed to show anything other than the photo page. However, you may wish to copy and carry more.

To be sure, I haven't run into very many Thai police who can read and understand English. They seem to be satisfied seeing something that looks 'authentic.' I used to carry a photo copies of the relevant passport pages, but stopped that years ago when I switched to the small card. As I said, I've used the card at least 30+ times with police, and more with others that requested a passport. It's never been questioned. I wouldn't try to use it at Immigration, but it seems to work well. Even my bank, which has a sign stating that an 'original passport' must be used, accepts it.

SK Money Exchange won't accept it.wink.png

sk money exchange accepts my thai drivers license every time... surprises me that they won't take a photo copy of passport... maybe they just like my handsum face

  10. don't know if this is much help... but we did ours in Nakhon Sawhan (Lad Yao) about 10 yrs ago. We also had to go to BKK to Foreign Affairs office. It was a protracted bit of business actually.

When i went for extension in November, 2015, for the first time, immigration asked for the Kor Ror 22. We went to Amphur in Sansai (where we live) and they checked the computer system. Because we had done it so long ago - it was not in the system.

Fortunately, the wife never throws out anything official and we had a certified copy in our files. Wife says that originally there were 2 official copies, one kept by amphur in Nakhon Sawan and one given to us.

    Don't know if that helps.

Other friends living here who have to provide the Kor Ror 22 just go to amphur and ask for a copy and that satisfies Immigration... but none of them are dealing with Hang Dong Amphur.

  11. I went to Dhaka and bought 24 weeks of Twinvir for 1850 USD... am 2 months into my treatment. worked out to about 11 USD/pill

First month was a month from hell for side-effects... even picked up a case of Bells Palsy outta nowhere... but most/all of early side effects are gone and starting to feel really healthy again.

Had some liver tests done a couple of weeks ago, but not a viral load. All liver functions are within normal ranges now - whereas they were 2-300% above normal before treatment.

For the record... i had stage 4 Fibrosis (did a fibroscan in chiang mai), had a viral load of 8.9 million, genotype 1A and was diagnosed in September 1967. I underwent interferon tx 10 years ago and it failed and let me miserable.

There is a gentleman selling authentic twinvir in BKK for around 55K baht for 12 weeks of tx. A pal purchased down there from him and he works with Greg and Dr. Freeman out of Australia.

I also spoke with Incepta Reps yesterday and they informed me they will now ship Twinvir directly to an individual in thailand and also that they intend to lower prices a bit starting this month.

All in all.. some real progress being made in availability/options of meds.

  12. I went in mid/late november to renew extension to stay based on marriage...

Went like last year... 2 copies of every thing... every page in my passport that has a thai stamp in it, lease for the house we live in, notary statement from US consulate, documentation to prove income (copies of warrants from my pension fund), pictures, map, etc.

One new wrinkle was that we were required to prove our marriage. Never been asked for this. I mean, we always had to provide copy of our marriage certificate (from USA), and a translation of said copy, but this year, for the first time, they said we needed a paper to prove that said marriage was recognized in Thailand... as in registered at the ampuhur, the officer said.

So, off to the amphur to see if we could "register" our marriage.

Upon arrival, the amphur clerk told my wife that since she had changed her last name to my name, she had to have filed appropriate documents already. Back home, my wife dug thru her copious files and remembered that indeed, we filed some documents many years ago and they were stamped and signed in BKK and sent off to the Foreign Ministry and stamped again there and our marriage was then officially recognized here in Thailand.

So other than this speed bump on our highway of success, it went smoothly, just like last year.

For proof of married in Thailand, they want a copy of a Por 2 from your Amphur office. I generally get one dated within 30 days from that date that I apply for an extension.

yes, but we did not have one and there is a lot of stuff to do to get your first one... fortunately, the docs we filed when she changed the name on her thai national ID card also fulfill this function... and it does not have to be dated within any time frame

  14. About 5 weeks ago, i traveled to Bangladesh and purchased 24 weeks of Twinvir - generic Harvoni, sold by Incepta. Returned thru BKK and on to CM with no hassles. Cost in Dhaka was 1860 USD for 24 weeks of pills.

Have been told by liver docs in CM that expectation is that Thailand will be getting supply from India, hopefully by end of first quarter in 2016. Problem is that Gilead (so i hear) wants it available only to Thai nationals and cost might run about 60 USD/pill... i only paid about 11 USD in Dhaka, but still, way cheaper than 1100/pill in USA.

Gilead has a real hard-on for Thailand, so availability and pricing may suffer because of this.

If you check with the buyers club out of Tasmania/Australia, secure and reliable generics are supposed to be available thru their friends in BKK right now, at a much cheaper price than $60/pill...

  15. 2 weeks ago missed out at 6AM, next

day got ticket No.3 just after 5AM

What do you mean you "missed out"? ... You were too late to get a ticket for that day?

I'm similarly curious as the OP as info on marriage extensions at CM now is very scarce. Any more comments from others?

i would like to know what he means "missed out" also.. that sounds kinda scary... to arrive at 6am and be told the queue is full
