  1. i use these folks, once or twice a year, for the past few years... it helps that they are right down the street from us and we

can just drop in and talk to the owner...

anyways... very accommodating, safe drivers and modern and safe vehicles. If they are in your budget, i suggest you call them.

BTW..they often have other vehicles available than what they advertise online.

  2. we were there again today and opted to no go out on the ice. Still not much supervision and the thai way of ice skating is too close to

    their version of driving...

and yes, the rink is looking smaller and smaller all the time... especially when so many people are on it.

Anyone know if the Promenada ice rink is open yet?

I had read here on TV that supposedly the "official" ice hockey team was renting the promenada rink for practice so logic would say

that the promendada rink would need to be bigger?

    logic?

    thailand?

    oh well...back to my book

  3. Wife was there today, for the 3rd time with our kid. Other times it was all good. However today was pandemonium.

Overly full and poorly staffed (as in no safety precautions or care being taken), our child was knocked down by a clumsy and aggressive teen.

Ok... that's all right... stuff happens...

but after an hour, the wife could not take the tension anymore, waiting for an accident to happen. Pulled the kid off the ice

    and headed for the door...

and then it all came to a head and apparently, 2 teenswere taken to the hospital, one with a broken leg.

I imagine/hope that this will lead to better supervision by staff and more responsible managing of the number of people on the ice

    at any one time.

but then... who am i kidding?!?!

Long story short... we will be going during the week and not on weekends... and bonus is that wednesday is 90 baht/hour for kids!

  4. Just wondering where this movie with a coup is supposed to be set?? Sounds obviously Thailand and with them using CM as a backdrop with all the Thai signage everywhere, they won't be able to fool many who have seen it and know the recent [and ongoing] coup history here in LOS. Any clues guys???

My bet is on it being the nation of South-East Asiana, that might as easily be Thailand as it would be Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia or the Philippines.

Sure if you're from Chiang Mai or Thailand you'll recognize it, but let's keep in mind this is an Owen Wilson movie; the target demographic doesn't own a passport.

And of course there will be some mild ripples in Thailand, more because hollywood movies are such an irresistable opportunity for some self-aggrandizing Thai journalist or politician to get his 5 minutes of fame, with maybe even an article in Salon.com written by an American travelling blogger-chick that nobody reads. (Cue: The Beach, The Hangover and all the others.)

Then Owen & Pierce will smile their prettiest pretty-boy smile and lavish some praise about the wonderful experience they had in Thailand, and people can go back to other things that also don't matter.

(Between you and me though I'm personally hoping Thailand comes off as a seriously dodgy place; people will then think I'm cool and adventurous again to live here. smile.png And maybe Thai people might realize that coups aren't necessarily happy bloodless events where Bangkokians stick flowers on tanks, but I'm really stretching it here of course.)

i heard from some extras that the signs on the stores were all replaced with burmese script... so i thought the movie is being "shot" in burma...

  5. they can do it at panthip for you...you have to leave HDD there and depending on size of the drive, can take several days.

However, if you have a good computer available that you don't need to turn off and can leave on for a couple of days, you can

do it yourself if you get the right programs.

I tried Stellar Phoenix (which is the one many folks at panthip use) and had very modest success and it took a LONG time.

I also used icare data recovery and had very good success with it and much faster too.

I was recovering data from 2 very burned out/overused 1 tb harddrives and got over 80% of my data recovered.

  6. we went there opening day hoping for some good bargains... really, none to be had.

the wife is in the mood for a new samsung note 3 and we went to about 10 different shops at Central Festival and

none would even match, let alone beat, the price we have been quoted at Central Airport Plaza.

oh well, i really do like the new mall, believe the noise level will go away as the newness wears off and now i

have an Aeon ATM closer to me than superhighway tesco/lotus!

  7. we have 3BBB and getting some issues also.. funny thing is... my chrome browser won't access TMZ or an asian movie site...

but Firefox will access it, thru an anonymizer plug in... however my torrents to the asian movie site are dead in the water...

  8. we had an outbreak of bedbugs in our men's shelter in the city of berkeley. Of course, we had to find the most humane and politically

correct way to solve the problem.

At the end of the day it was infrared heat lamps... focused on the walls to get rid of bugs living in the walls and the mattresses we had to toss (homeless advocates would settle for nothing less).

good luck...as mentioned, first step is to correctly identify your problem.

  9. my wife and a friend worked as extras yesterday and Owen was onset, but Pierce was not to be seen.

How much are they paying per day for extras ?They could not tell me ,but i guess its only pocket money ?

for thais, it was 600 baht ... she had to be there at 5am and got let go at 6pm.. heard that they pay more for falangs... but don't know...the day she went, it was only thais and burmese and hill tribes that they had brought in

    ... from the hills

  10. made tamales with this product tonight. Defrost first, put in mixer, add salt, warm water and some liquefied pork fat (lard substitute).

mixed to consistency (added a very small amount of regular white flour to stiffen it up), got out my corn husks which had sat in warm water for about an hour and went to work.

added cheese and chopped jalapenos for stuffing, as i just wanted to get a sense of tamale texture.

Steamed for about 45-1hr... still were not really firm, but jumped in as i was almost foaming at the mouth by now.

Heated up some enchilada sauce wife had made and frozen last week (with real dried chili peppers from USA)...

Poured over it and WOW... i mean, it was not EXACTLY what i was hoping for, but better than anything i had tried yet in CM.

anyways... a work in progress, but have a feeling that i can get what i want out of this product, including some great corn tortillas and

maybe i will even try and work out some columbian arepas! haven't had those in about 25-30 years!

  11. have not seen it yet, but in theory, you can make corn tortilla from it... masa harina is commonly used for flour tortillas... i am most anxious to try it for some REAL tamales! I have the corn husks and real mexican

    chili powders... can't wait.

don't know where they are getting it from, but it might be from BKK... i asked John (owner of Salsa Kitchen) where he gets his from (masa) and he said a company out of BKK....at any rate, will stop by this

    afternoon and pick some up...

  12. I use UNBLOCK-US for VPN. It's about $5 a month (there are free VPN's as well) and it lets me access Hulu, HBO and Netflix as well as let me connect to Netflix in any country they operate. I got "Breaking Bad" from Netflix UK.

Question: When you connect a computer direct to TV with DVI cable, don't you get the full desktop display? All the annoying nonsense at the top and surrounding areas of the desktop when you're trying to just watch a movie in 2:40 aspect ratio...? If so, that alone is worth a one time $99 purchase to me...

hmmm... since you are using DVI cable, it might be your computer resolution and/or your TV settings... why not HDMI? Make sure both are full HDMI, 1080p... if so, and still getting awkward aspect ratio, that would be coming from the source...meaning HULU or Netflix...

  13. Apple TV. Got it. Love it.

Stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, news, sports, weather, music and tons more..... and of course you can buy entertainment from iTunes.

You can also download movies and entertainment from your favorite torrent and stream it from your computer to the TV wirelessly through Apple TV.

Of course you can do all this stuff with memory sticks, cables from your computer etc... but at only 99bucks for an Apple TV, why would you?

How to you convince Hulu Plus or Frontline, etc. that you are in the US so you can stream or download?

VPN, ultrasurf, OpenVPN,Mozilla with the right plug-in, hotspot shield... etc etc

Which of those solutions are legal?

not being familiar with TOS from Hulu, etc... i am not sure which are "legal". It might be that Hulu says you MUST physically be in USA.. don't know.

anyways...all those solutions are legal to USE for many things... but as i said, various sites might forbid them in their terms of service
