  1. wife's mom said it rained in Nakhon Sawan last two days... sister in BKK says is "smells" like rain... keep your fingers crossed

    and your umbrella handy!

  2. in part, a recommendation would be dependent on what you use your computer(s) for and how far they are from the modem itself.

New modems recently came out that provide a lot more bandwidth - if you need it. Obviously, newest and greatest are the best and most expensive.

Modems with more/better antennas have been available for awhile and again, you pretty much get what you pay for.

cisco has long been an industry standard and also one of the more expensive... we use a d-link at home, have 5 machines (3 computers and 2 tablets) hooked up

and are pretty happy with it. Only reboot it once a month or so to refresh the connection/IP and it keeps chugging along for 2 yrs now.

  3. that looks exactly like an ad placed on many FB CM pages... the person who places the ads on FB has been banned from just about

every group (secondhand CM, I love CM, etc)... for a variety of different reasons... some claiming he did not provide services as stated,

other sites banned him just cuz of his personal "style" , for lack of a better, non-liable phrase...

as the saying goes... protect yourself at all times ....

  4. speedtest.net is one... some folks say this is not a true test .... to each their own...

trueinternet speed test, ... several pop up for me in google and none require installation of anything... just click and zingo/!

  5. did it last july... fly to don muang then picked up by hired van and driver ... who took us all the way to hotel on koh chang...

3 families sharing roundtrip cost of the van, so it was not too expensive... took about 4 hrs if i remember correctly.

Picked up at hotel for return trip and since we had the time, asked driver to meander along the coast, enjoying the sights

and stopping for a leisurely nice seafood lunch on the way back... turning it into a very nice 6 hr return trip... cuz that is the way we planned it.

  6. many facebook pages, dedicated to chiang mai activites... what,where,when-chiangmai lists a lot of events that may appeal to you.

where you live in town, your ability to get around town, your personal preferences in activities... hell, there are folks begging for people to play

softball on weekends, other folks joining up at small clubs/bars... and most of that info will be found on the FB pages

  7. Has anyone seen Pinatas around town? You know, those mexican party thingies, that hang on a rope,

you blindfold (or not) a kid, and let them swing with a stick till the Pinata breaks and the candy falls out.

Looking for one or two for a kids birthday party.

    thanks

  8. Being here for 7 months we can't bring that much cash! 12000 baht a time is the most we're allowed to withdraw from an ATM in a day. On the one occasion we went to the teller and asked to withdraw 20000 baht, she just escorted us to the ATM (where we could only withdraw 12000). She just shrugged her shoulders and went back to her desk.

Sent from my GT-I8552 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Open a thai bank account and transfer required funds as and when.

Unless you transfer a large sum, the fees for an international transfer are worse than the 150 charge.

if you use Bangkok bank, then have transfer done thru your bank to Bangkok bank thru the new york routing codes... then it appears in your Bangkok Bank acct here, with something like a 50 baht service charge (very small, at any rate) from the NY branch office... many expats (me included) been doing this for years

  9. i mostly was using Chrome, switched to FF when i discovered how easy their Anonymox plugin made it possible to have a US or UK ip.

then 2 days ago, updated to 27 and BAM... FF is freezing often (particularly in "private" mode) and making a mess out of grabbing

torrents... so back to Chrome... might just uninstall FF completely and do a clean install...see if that clears things up

  10. Pimuk 1, Pimuk 2 and Emperor 2 are all within walking distance of RuamChok intersection and Tesco/Lotus/Rimping, fresh market etc.

Since you see Rob at sausage king, ask him what living in Pimuk 1 was like, as that was where i first met him. I have other friends who have lived

over there and opinions vary, as it is a large area and soi dogs are more troublesome in some spots, but not others, etc..

Pimuk 2 currently has at least 2 vacancies that i know of (we live here) and it is very small and quiet (and closer to Rimping by foot/bicycle).

Emperor 2 is closer yet still, but more expensive then the 2 Pimuks, in general.

  11. did not look thru all the back pages on this topic... but did anyone mention the old olive oil and pressed/chopped garlic..

slightly heated... poured into ear and left for 10-15 mins...

i know this worked for me... many many years ago and i have not had a re-occurrence of the problem.

also used it for ear aches with my kids

  12. i have been getting massage (originally at school behind Nim center) from same two people - a brother and sister... Khun Sert and Khun Phet.

Sert specializes in nerve massages and everyone i recommend to him has appreciated his skills. His sister Phet is a deeper muscle type of massage person.

Both pay close attention to the needs/requests of the customer.

They have opened their own shop now...Sutis Thai massage... phone 0895560210

Going around the moat, like you are going to Wuluwai (silver) Street... but go past Wuluwai to next traffic light, turn left.

About halfway down the street, on the right is a large parking lot, next to GSB (pink bank)... there are some newish offices at the back of the parking lot...

    First office, far left.

I have had many aches and pains over the years and they folks always fix me up.

  13. first off, there are at least 2 or 3 cost effective brands there and i don't remember the names.. my "dongle" is M-tec, i believe and onscreen comes up R-box or something.... that is the cheapest/leanest one they have...

to answer the other question... it hooks up to TV, yes... does it replace a computer? depends on what you use a computer for... cannot put MS office on it, do spreadsheets or video and photo editing... can browse the net, watch youtube, access googleplay store, play games, etc... all the ordinary simple things that a computer might do for someone, yes, that is why i bought it... to give my kid another "computer" without having the size and cost of a real laptop

do you know the brand of the 3x3 box yr friends have bought ?

    Thanks for the feedback.

nope, don't remember... but it is the one they are using for the display at the shop in Panthip... if you know Rob (sausageking) give him a call... he was one of my pals that i took down there and he bought the droid box, wireless mouse and keyboard, 500gig external, etc...

BTW.. my dongle and robs box both play everything and anything we have throw at it (including showing subs)... sometimes i get a bit of buffering on some channels (via XBMC), but most often, the device buffers a bit first, before starting play...

they have utorrent for android, so i imagine you could install that and download and play as needed.

personally, with this newer dongle (4core graphics and dual core processor and a few gigs of memory), i have no problems watching anything or with skype.. have a usb camera/mic combo from Logitech and it works seamlessly

  15. i did not buy the egreat... i agree...overpriced and not that great... simple android dongle was the way i went and i have no complaints. The next step up is a small 3 X 3 in (approx) box, which has the LAN and multiple ports.. again, 2 friends who bought it have no problems

  16. What exactly are you talking about? A set top box that has HDMI output, that sends signal from a typical Android OS system unit to the TV? Sounds interesting?? What firmware do they use? 4.2 ? Can you root, etc?

well, not exactly sure what you mean by a set top box, the one i bought is the size of a large dongle/usb stick... others (more cost) have multiple USB ports and LAN connection.. mine has HDMI out, wireless internet connection, and only one USB out, which i attach a powered hub to. That way i can run skype camera, additional harddrive with stored movies, wireless keyboard and mouse, etc...

not sure which version of android it is running... 4.x for sure... can it be rooted? well, that is a question for forums...

considering the cost (think it was like 2200 baht for mine), it substitutes for a laptop quite well...

Interesting, indeed--I must investigate--you say upstairs at Pantip Plaza has similar-and the shop that you bought from has a subsidiary in PP--any name? I presume it attaches via USB to a flat Screen TV or similar?

i forgot the name of the company.. it is the only one with them on display upstairs and yes, they have a sister company in BKK... attaches to flat screen via HDMI...

  18. upstairs at Panthip...they have several models, several price ranges, available... i bought one there and have several friends who have purchased them also... everyone is very happy with their purchase... mine allows the kid to use our TV for youtube, playing minecraft, etc.. and whenever i want, i play games and also watch tv/movies from USA... great bargain IMHO.

BTW, our first purchase (bought at sister store in Panthip BKK) was defective and the shop here in CM replaced without any problem..

you might want to make sure they install XBMC for you... many models do not come with it...
