Wikipedia also mentions the custodial sentences handed out to dog owners whose pets attack. Under the Dangerous Dogs Act in the UK that came in in the 1990s many people have been jailed, some for as long as ten years.
Obviously in this case the family are suffering but relatives and carers of this dog had many warnings. There should also be a law that allows for them to be jailed.
Thailand is far, far too lenient when it comes to dogs. People face jail for taking the matter of strays causing annoyance into their own hands.
This has to change for the protection of innocent family members and the wider public.
People who say carte blanche that Thais have no responsibility for the care of dogs are mostly Thai bashing, however. Have they ever been to a dog show in Thailand and seen the dedication that people have? I honestly think that most responsible Thai dog owners would welcome changes in the law to stop the bad apple owners who raise dangerous dogs and/or mistreat them.
For starters the dog in this story should be euthanized - but is that even a legal option given the bias to dogs in this country? I do wonder.
I'm the opposite of a dog lover but I translate these stories in good faith, trying to be fair to the original source and adding some bits where necessary.
Frankly this one beggared belief.

Thanks for the tip. It's always irksome when one has to put one's diamond encrusted gold Rolex in carry on.

For those who think Thailand is expensive:
Collisions with laceration wound at forehead, no loss of consciousness (so no x-ray or CT), cleaned, 5 stitches, sent home with antibiotics.
Small govt clinic (part of a well-known 'chain') in two non-tourist places.
80 baht a time....21 stitches in forehead total after slipping at Sai Yok waterfall and another day head butting my son on a banana boat in Rayong.
18K is only 18K.

I'd be more worried if they were 18.

Mind you, if I was a younger female and minor celebrity who was trying to get my name out there in print and to attract attention, my experience might have been different.
I've been here twice as long as you and it's never happened to me. But I know plenty of people who have been shaken down, especially in Thong Lo and tourist areas. Experiences of long term residents are not necessarily reflected by tourists and/or those who have been here just weeks or months and especially those who can't speak Thai.

It is insane to get on a motorbike in Thailand as a rider or passenger.
I'll grant you that riding a bike in Thailand should only be done by good riders and there are many deaths.
But since I started working for TV/AN in 2016 I have translated 20,000 stories from the Thai press and IIRC not a single one involved a fatality on a "win".
They provide a great service here in Bangkok, the last thing they and the public needed was Bolt and Grab who are largely unregulated.

Whenever I read "Thaksin coming back to Thailand" I think of Benigno Aquino at Manila airport in August 1983.
Forty years on I wonder what might happen here in Thailand.

Third on the list is Premchai Karnasuta, the chairman of Italian-Thai Development, one of Thailand's largest construction and engineering firms. With a net worth of $7.2 billion, Karnasuta is also involved in real estate development and infrastructure projects......and shooting defenseless animals.

I find the easiest way to sidestep all these u-turns is to stay at home in Bangkok clutching my residency book, denying reality.

As pointed out it should say Thailand had 36,000 deaths in a ten year period.

I just missed this guy's killing era in and around the Malaysia Hotel in Soi Ngam Duplee. And I'm glad I never got anywhere near him. A real danger to people he befriended, drugged and murdered on the hippie trail. If he ever came back to Thailand he'd be held on a double murder charge. He slipped out of RTP fingers before and would not be allowed to do so again. He wouldn't dare come to Thailand.
Beware elsewhere though no matter how advanced his age.
