Dan the post where you described Retox Game On as being in "some Soi in Central Pattaya" had me wondering exactly how well you knew the place.

This post is having the same effect.

i was referring to the main tourist areas, like soi buakhao. what i saw was foreign tourist eateries where the food was junk (over priced for what it was).

to give a concrete example, the ever present "western breakfast" consisting of a hot dog that should be a sausage, a slice of toasted white bresd, scrambled eggs, a thimble full of oj enough to put in my eye, some beans, coffee, usually priced around 150-200 baht. that's about 5-6 usd. a tourist scam imo.

It's possible relocations may mean less rent to pay, thus better product and service can be offered to customers.

Probably rare for a tourist location like Pattaya where people are just passing through. The business model is more like offer window dressing, serve over priced cheap <deleted>, and draw in the next customer who won't ever return.

  3. i have been afraid of this sort of thing for awhile now.

my other concern is whether a vaccine card with no direct contact info will be accepted everywhere or not, possibly necessitating one be re-vaccinated in the country they are entering, or be refused because a booster of your original vaccine type is not available in that part of the world.

one could possibly be pumped full of vaccines more then required if your crossing borders through necessity, which i usually am. i would need to get another shot in that situation. who knows what this will do to our bodies. it's strong stuff. i had a reaction during my 1st pfizer jab, dizziness and some nausea.

It's interesting to read how many are so desperate to be vaccinated against a virus they are extremely unlikely to contract...

i don't wear a helmet or have health insurance because i never get in accidents and i'm still under 60 blah blah blah...

  5. how do you get a sim card for your phone if they usher you through at the airport and your stuck in the room?

sounds like your asq stay was a real ball breaker, and not a luxury stay, like on the brochure..

Here's another point for those who say, just fly back home.

    Oh really?

    Suppose that's realistic.

Has anyone considered what a waste that is? For many thousands of expats to fly half way around the world taking trips they otherwise didn't intend to take just to get a vaccine?

Consider how much more EFFICIENT it would be for these lame excuse making embassies to simply SHIP IN the jabs.

if you can't afford a ticket home you are already in an emergency situation. Your just waiting for a curve ball, could be anything. Getting a vaccine would be low on my priorites.

I suggest looking at cheaper countries if your still healthy and mobile, for example Cambodia. Otherwise, re-establish ties to your home country if you can afford it. You can live on almost nothing in Cambodia or Vietnam if you try. Gov't building in Hanoi were around $60 a month, my real estate agent lived in one.

Take action until you have a ticket home expenses banked and don't touch the funds. If that goes it's time to bail to your home country and throw yourself into the government assistance arena if your lucky enough to be from somewhere that offers it.

  7. will add to my post above...

if it's the kind of thing you like to do anyway, or are retired and money is not the primary objective, i could see going ahead with just one cheap place, meet people in person and see how it goes.

it could be an interesting retirement project or way to meet people, if you have the right mindset. if your not stretched financially the problems that do arise have a way of working themselves out given time.

  8. feels like a disaster waiting to happen ????

    1. my 1st thought is how do you get people out who can't pay or who pay late? or handle safely keeping deposits for damages?

    2. how to do vet people creditwise?

    3. are you able to pick up nuances of a reference or employer conversation on the phone in a culture that won't obvertly give out bad info on somebody?

    4. best case scenario imo would be hire a management company to do it, but i have had problems with that even in my home country where i had full rights and had to cut them off for various reasons.

    5. there is also airbnb who holds the money and your both bounded by their contract, but it's monthly or daily, pretty much a full time job. it also has reviews, with a grain of salt. this could work but they do BOW OUT if something serious happens. in other words all you would get back at best is the payment for the month, nothing more.

    5. what happens with my rentals is i find someone who looks great initially. soon after they start asking for things to be repaired or replaced to a higher standard. you go ahead and do what they ask because you want them to stay and be happy. their demands increase the more you comply. after awhile you start feeling like you want them out. (your experience may differ of course, perfect tenants are out there ????).

people who are renting have all sorts of problems and they kind of get linked to the landlord in a way. with a sale your just one and done, everything is pat settled and it becomes someone else's problem.

I flew to the UK on 22nd April and had my first dose of the vaccine the following day. Get my second dose tomorrow and then will plan my return to Thailand in mid July. Job done.

i'm hearing chatter about needing a booster next year. you may need to go back again for a booster of the same type of vaccine.

Yeah I'm happy being in Pattaya for the foreseeable future, but i realise things can change so I wouldn't spend too much on a condo or house that may end up being just a holiday home or if married end up giving to the wife if get divorced

what are you going to do there long term?

it's just a bunch of bars and restaurants.

are you happy visiting the same places for months/years on end?

kasetsin is a no go zone, wild dogs, probably dingo's too, it's too isolated, no quick access to town. I'm close to Pratumnak hill near the top which means i can walk to Thepraya in 5 minutes and 2nd road 10 minutes so can catch a baht bus, but 99% of the time i use a motorbike or walk. 30 mins walk to walking st. Pratumnak is all about location, you want to be walkable to baht bus in case you need one. Much of Pratumnak is too far

are you really happy with a permanent residence in pattaya?

is it somewhere you want to grow old in, or just a vacation property?

Own off Pratumnak hill on one of the sois, glad i bought there, still easy to get to town and when it opens i walk to Walking st

do you go down kasetsin rd by the park? ????

that's the worst area i have scouted condos at. its an isolated enclave with construction everywhere and you need to taxi out unless your inhuman. the area has a lot of condo listings that look great on a brochure and are really cheap, i checked it out on foot first and did not even bother to see the condo.

are you in that isolated area near the sea and the pattaya sign? or more over by buddha hill where unixx is?

  13. when i lived in mexico the toilet did not work in an airbnb i stayed in for a month. there was a female flight attendant who holed up in a hidden bedroom living there when i was suppossed to have rented the entire apt for myself. she would leave early for work in the morning.

one night i took a dump in the toilet and just left it there because it would not flush. i was <deleted> about it. in the morning i heard her plunging the toilet and when i got up later it was sparkling clean. that's how i found out she was using the other room, coming in unseen late at night, and leaving first thing in the morning.

You may be able to visit Phuket in July, but the details haven't been announced yet.  Everyone is waiting for the announcement.

Don't get too excited about it until they announce all the costs and restrictions.  I would expect it to cost many many times the typical trip to phuket and you may have very limited freedom.

imagine what the taxi mafia is going to do to the few tourists that arrive at the airport. your a sitting duck.
