Have a look at XE https://www.xe.com/mt/au-money-transfer

Their rates are not quite as good as TransferWise but they don’t charge a fee so the net cost is about the same. They make physical transfers via NZ so it should always appear as an overseas transaction in your Thai bank book.

I should have mentioned that XE transfers usually take 3-4 business days whereas TransferWise transfers tend to arrive within 24 hours.

  2. “Phuket Governor in an interview aired today (Apr explained that by Monday all 17 subdistricts in Phuket will be under “lockdown” orders.

However, he added that people still allowed outside their homes, but must stay inside their subdistrict.

The Governor has repeatedly urged people to stay indoors to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

This still applies during Songkran, The Phuket News has been told.“

Thanks for clearing that up Governor.

  3. 92% of people who have died from coronavirus in the UK are over 60.

Couldn’t the lockdown be restricted to over-60s (& also under-60s with pre-existing conditions) allowing everyone else to get back to work? This would create herd immunity amongst the healthiest sector of the population. Those stuck at home could be incentivised to stay in by being given free broadband, free food deliveries, etc. In return they would have to agree to being monitored to ensure they comply.

You would just put that as the reason on TM.7 and your normal passport/copies and arrive with account paperwork, wife, extra photos that are required for marriage extensions (normally 3 or 4 with one sitting on bed and another together at entry with house number), her ID/Home Register and copies and whatever your specific office may require.  Normally not much different than normal retirement - but someone has to return in a month to get the final stamp.

Thanks for the information. Does this mean that I should apply 1 month before my retirement extension expires?

Since you should have all the necessary information to set it back up (stored in the AC68) then a factory reset is the easiest route. I'm not even sure if 3BB can deal with it once it's bridged, you could give them a call.

Meanwhile is your AC68 running Merlin? Upgraded firmware may address your issues.

  6. Does anyone know how to switch out of bridge mode. My ISP is 3BB & I have a Huawei HG8045A modem which I changed to bridge mode myself although I don’t remember how! Attached to that is an Asus RT-AC68U router which I’m not 100% happy with so I’ve order 3 Google WiFi devices but they require the modem not to be in bridge mode. Can I do a factory reset or do I need to ask 3BB to do it remotely?

  7. Bought a couple of these from 7-11 & pleasantly surprised. Not seen Cambodian beer in Thailand before so I was curious. Despite the name it wasn’t sweet, instead it had a nice rich dark flavour. However the bad news is it costs B99 for a 330ml can which is too much for me.

  8. My UK bank doesn't charge for overseas transfers & is quick, usually within 24 hours. The downside is I don't know what the exchange rate will be, my Thai bank charges around B200 & the request has to be made by phone.

Transfers via TransferWise are very easy using their app & you know exactly how much you're going to receive but it is slower, usually 2 to 3 days. Their transfers are from their Thai bank to yours & I asked them why it takes so long since bank to bank transfers within Thailand are almost instant. Their explanation was that their Thai bank account is some kind of business account & therefore doesn't work like normal customer accounts. My suspicion is that their business model includes holding on to customers money for 1 or 2 days as explained in a previous post.

Having said that, for non urgent transfers I will continue to use TransferWise.
