The simple conclusion is that if a strict reading of the 2nd amendment coneys an absolute right to unfettered gun ownership then that isn't how it's been applied in practice. There are many guns which are not permitted outside of the military, including machine guns and sawn off shotguns. Furthermore, contrary to such a strict reading, many people are prevented from owning guns.
