  1. well... well... well... after spending a lazy sunday with my [multilingual] dogs at a secluded beach ~80km from Sin City i feel compelled to make a short  statement as specified hereafter:

-all of us enjoyed the day as the vegetarian :bah: Mrs who abhors the non-vegetarian food we three enjoy very much did not accomany us.

-the thai owner, chef and waiter of a small seafood joint located at said secluded beach was full of joy when we arrived. we always have a lot of fun when jointly emptying the bottle of [good] wine i carry to his "restaurant". he also plays his role well when my [multilingual] dogs ask for a menue written either in Mandarin or Kanji and he always shakes his head in sorrow but smiles when they order "halal slaughtered cat roast on a bed of kosher garlic prawns and prikh naam pla in a rather big bowl".

-i am not yet abroad where unaffordable roaming charges apply. but i will leave Thailand thursday evening leaving my beloved Bee-Emm-Dubbelyew behind.

what else is of interest to report? that it is fun imagining the dripping of saliva from the mouths of some self-proclaimed lawyers  who are full of frustration because they liaise with uneducated natives and can't afford multilingual servants nor BMWs in Thailand? stating the correct language skills of our domestic staff (finally i know that our gardener is fluent -reading and writing- in three and can make himself understood in two additional languages)? posting a picture of an S6 (the car Dr Somkid drives in Thailand)? that the left wing mirror of my wife's Benz sometimes folds and sometimes doesn't? that i am not a car salesman?

i wonder when one of the Right Honourable Moderators decides to close this thread. for some of them it must be an eyesore.

    :jap:

  3. Surely it's extremely hard to guess.... depends on lots of things :(

Thailand wants tourism so I guess it's in there interests to make it affordable - otherwise all the farangs will go home saying 'forget thailand, the good old days are gone'.

i wonder why PM Abhisit is hesitating! a phone call would solve the problem. all what he has to do is order Ms Tarisa Watanagase or (from 1. oct onwards) her successor Prasarn Trairatvorakul at the Bank of Thailand to flip the THB-exchange rate switch from "not affordable" to "affordable". as simple as that... or do i miss something?

  4. "When taking the dear doggies 'for a spin', do you advise putting them inside the car, or just tie their leashes to the bumper & trust that, under the doctrine of 'survival-of-the-fittest', any decent hound will either run fast-enough or 'Klingon' to your car ?"

my dogs are inside and enjoy all the scents they are passing. but if they could they'd jump out of the windows. sizewise they are not really fit to pull a 2-ton car.

  5. i wouldn't miss the buttwasher because i am using bidets since decades. what i would miss after leaving Thailand are the four seasons. snow and icy roads from january till march, then a beautiful spring with comfortable temperatures, trees blossoming and the big fun one has during Songkran. then summer when one fills up the pool and frolicks in it and last not least the foggy november and december days when everybody prepares and hopes for a white Christmas with a lot of snow and the Thai neighbours bring cookies to the Farang neighbours.

  6. Dr. Naam, please educate us with some of the more significant points on your list. There are apparently thousands of people worldwide working on this.

Is there a better way to cheap safe power?

there is no doubt that worldwide millions of people are working in thousands of various research sectors. but that is no conclusive evidence that positive results can be achieved.

generating energy with thorium reactors is much safer (hardly any dangerous waste) but not cheap. as far as "cheap" is concerned nobody can fathom the cost of building reactors. conventional reactors cannot be modified (as opposed to some publications) to use Th as fuel. replacing existing reactors with those using Th cannot be financed, except if it is done step by step lasting decades. BUT as of now (and since decades) we are only dealing with theories and assumptions. fusion experiments (like CERN in southern France) are generations ahead; not only in theory but in practical experience. a couple of decades ago "fast breeders" were supposed to be the solution of all our energy problems and the fact is they could be... if there were no safety concerns. my home country spent billions building a fast breeder. alas, it never even went online to produce one single kWh.

in my [not so] humble view :jap: discussions about energy problems and their solutions are extremely interesting. but even if there were solutions they couldn't solve any financial crisis (which is the topic of this thread), prevent fraudulent banksters to fleece investors and taxpayers or prevent incompetent politicians to waste the money of the taxpayer.

  7. Ever heard of Thorium ?

Sounds like it could solve a few problems !

Obama could kill fossil fuels overnight with a nuclear dash for thorium

If Barack Obama were to marshal America’s vast scientific and strategic resources behind a new Manhattan Project, he might reasonably hope to reinvent the global energy landscape and sketch an end to our dependence on fossil fuels within three to five years.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/comment/7970619/Obama-could-kill-fossil-fuels-overnight-with-a-nuclear-dash-for-thorium.html

    Fascinating topic!

There is an intro video, etc. here from the Thorium Energy Alliance

    http://www.thoriumenergyalliance.com/

I wish Thailand would wait to construct this type of reactor to generate energy. It sounds like a much cheaper and safer alternative to uranium reactors.

    1. Sounds too good to be true - doesn't it -

    2. Are there any negatives ?

    3. and why aren't governments rushing to develop ?

    1. it is

    2. too many to list (take that from a physicist)

    3. because governments are not that stupid and believe in the wacko theories of a few wannabe scientists.

    thorium case closed.

    next!

  8. If he escaped now, Thailand's reputation with the world would be in the toilet...not that it isn't already! :whistling:

some people think if he is extradited Thailand's reputation with the world...

    "1 Criminal conspiracy in committing murders, provision and supplying of weapons and terrorist training with intent to kill US citizens;

2 Criminal conspiracy in committing murders of US government employees and officials;"

sure! he had nothing else in mind then killing US citizens... my àss! :bah:

Ronald Reagan, Oliver North and "Iran Contra" send their greetings!

  9. Jim Rogers now lives in Singapore. He was pretty up on OZ till he visited. He wrote a scathing article on the country that focused on ownership rights but then swept into hassles to stay, visas and even racism. Was not a pretty picture from one of the worlds smartest people.

if Jim Rogers ever considered Oz as residence he must have been out of his freaking mind. in Singapore he doesn't pay a penny of income tax, the Aussies would fleece him for millions.

  10. He borrwed my screw drive to unlock the tank cover and - well yes - it was due to be emptied sometime soon.

you obviously don't know that you can't check visually whether a septic tank is "due to be emptied". simple reason: a septic tank is always full. only if the amount of solids exceed a certain height (which means the septic system does not work) the tank has to be emptied. a properly designed septic tank does not need to be emptied for up to two decades.

this advice is free of charge!

depends on activity within the septic tank as well of course, kill the microorganisms with bleach etc, and even a properly designed septic tank will need emptying...

    ditto FOC :D

...because it is nearly unavoidable that non-biodegradable material is flushed down the toilets, washbasins and sinks. if people would only add pee and <deleted> to the system it would become "perpetuum septicissimus"

  11. but the activities of The Right Honourable Osama bin-Laden, Esq., :bah: various other terrorists, drug dealers cum money launderers, etc. made that nearly impossible nowadays

Its ok your among friends..... you can just tell the truth... they used Bin Laden as an excuse to fleece us even more than usual ;)

the GUTA (Global United Taxmen Association) has ordered already end of 2005 its members to prostrate themselves flat on the floor before they go to bed and pray:

"dear <insert deity>, we wholeheartedly thank you for providing us with al-Qaeda and its associates, drug barons and their money launderers as well as the arm twisting and blackmailing power of the Greatest Nation on Earth™, the latter paving the way to look into any drawers and pockets worldwide where our citizens might hide something valuable to protect it from our greedy claws."
