  1. If I have overseas rental income but I do not bring the income into Thailand but instead leave it in my home country to accumulate and pay tax there.  Do I then still need to file a tax return to declare overseas rental income in Thailand assuming I don’t intend to bring the income here in the tax year it was earned?   I have no other income source in Thailand aside from a small amount of local bank interest.  Can I then opt not to file a tax return even though I have a tax ID in Thailand?  Thanks.

You have the relationship between Thai tax ID and tax filing wrong.  Getting a Thai tax ID doesn't obligate you to file a Thai tax return.  Not having a Thai tax ID will require you to file a Thai tax return if you want the tax withholding on bank interest returned to you.  If you have a Thai tax ID you can ask the bank to forego withholding tax on the interest until it surpasses 20K ฿.  If you are successful at getting the bank to stop withholding you won't need to file a return unless you have other income.  Some staff at the banks/branches understand their bank's rules and procedures well enough to stop withholding and some don't.  Good luck.

That’s very useful to know.  Thank you for the additional clarification.

  3. Hi,

assuming your living in Thailand as a retiree is there any legal requirement in Thailand to obtain a TIN number here.   I have a tax ID from the country I moved from previously and my existing banks seem ok with that for now so don’t really want the hassle of doing a thai tax return which I understand I will have to complete if I apply for a Thai TIn.   Hoping it’s not necessary.  Thanks.

  4. I have recently relocated to Bangkok on a retirement visa and updated my new address details with my bank account overseas.

As a result I am now being asked for a tax iD number for Thailand.  As I am not working here and have no income in Thailand am I still able to apply for a tax ID and just submit a tax return each year here thereafter with nil income?

I plan to go to the local tax office here next week and apply for one and see what they say but any insights from other members on this topic as to how they deal with overseas banks or brokers requiring a thai tax ID when you move here would be appreciated.

Also if there is a link to the form to complete please can you provide it.

    Thank you.

  5. Hi,

am planning to do my 90 day report at CW and would also like to obtain a residence permit to enable the opening of a second bank account.  I also want yo use this for obtaining a Tax Identification Number and to apply for a Thai driving license.   I understand that an accepted reason to put on the application form is to apply for a driving license but can I use this residence certificate for the application for a bank account and TIN as well?  Also does anybody know which counter at CW to approach for this please?   Thank you.

  6. I understand you can obtain a residence certificate at MTT.  I am planning to do my 90 day report in a few months there and wish to apply for the RC whilst I am there.  My reasons for obtaining one are to open a second bank account as they require it, plus I plan to apply for a Tax Identification Number after 6 months of residency as well and I plan to obtain a thai driving license.   As this will be my first time at MTT can someone advise if there is a particular counter or area in the building I should go to apply for this please?   Also do I need to do an antigen test to get into the building or just proof of vaccination is enough?  Thank you.

  7. I would like to obtain a Residents Certificate in order to then obtain a Tax Identification number for banking purposes.   Could someone tell me if I need to go to CW Immigration to obtain this or elsewhere?   Also what form is required and which area in CW should I go to?   Also wondering if I can obtain this when I do my first 90 day in person report at MTT instead as it would be easier if I can do it there at the same time.   Thank you.

  8. I am a UK citizen and a permanent Hong Kong ID card holder so I have the right of abode to live and work there.   Am non resident in the UK for tax purposes and the shares were purchased whilst in Hong Kong.  The private company is UK domiciled although as I am not tax resident in the UK I don’t envisage any UK tax liability on any realization as long as I am still non resident in the UK.   Have now relocated to Thailand on a retirement visa.
