  1. Just a quick update for people in a similar position.   We did finally get the insurance.  The staff and service were amazing.  But it took nearly two weeks for my husband to clear underwriting due to pre-existing conditions.   I am not recommending this but (as we have no intention of claiming on the policy) I did wonder whether we'd have been as well being less honest...    Basically it ended up that we signed a disclaimer for the conditions and got the policy at the base price - perfect.  But recommend you leave a bit of time and don't get your bank statements / medical etc. till the policy is in place.   But thanks to all that came up with this for us - you saved me a fortune ????

  2. We went to Samui Immigration today to renew our retirement visa for the first time.   Having jumped through the hospital and bank hoops and taken great care with paperwork I was confident.   But our application was rejected as our insurance was not Thai.  My bad - I must have missed the memo.   But it looks like my 74 year old husband will be a problem.   Any magic wands?   We have 1.5m in worldwide BUPA cover so it really is just lip service.   But the forms and medicals on my first look over are very onerous.   Help.  I am writing this before investigating too much on the forum - forgive me but the clock is ticking now ...

  3. So I read up online and thought I had it sussed *hysterical laughter*.  I have my passport,  passport copies, bank stuff, medical insurance, house book and headed with some confidence to the immigration office.  Before just going up to the desk I asked what I needed to double check before handing over my precious 1900 THB.   And the list given bears little relation to what I thought I needed.

Most important is item No 4 on the list - a letter from Embassy showing personal pension or proof of pension.  I don't yet have a pension as I'm only 59.  Is this (as I thought) an and / or with the 800K (Item 5)?   It certainly does not say this on the form.

Item 6 is a Google Map for our house which I guess I can do but Item 10 is a Drawing Map - is that as it sounds same as Google map but drawn?

Item 8 is a medical certificate but we have insurance - do I need this too?   Went to hospital and involves an x-ray and blood test which seems a lot...?

Item 11 is a document for Notification of the Residence of Foreigners which I assume to be a TM30 but we (our company) owns our house...

Any help with this would be fantastic.  I gave myself a couple of weeks to sort out so not currently stressed but it would be nice to have it done.   Thanks so much.

  4. Thank you Guderian - really.  I guess most Brits here are way better off than they would be in the UK so there is no big appetite to go back.   I just feel there is injustice and little or no logic to UK returners from Thailand having to quarantine / isolate when you can hop straight home and back into life from say Hong Kong or Vietnam.  To others thanks for all the advice on quarantine which I didn’t ask for or require.

  5. Thanks to everybody who replied.  Europe it is - unless the UK relent in the next few weeks.  The only direct flight I can find from BKK is to Paris which is not my preference (want to be more south).    There are some options with transit in Europe which I'm guessing will be fine however I wondered if there were any implications to quarantine if transiting in Doha or any of the Emirates?   Will do the research myself but if somebody knows or can point me in the right direction I would be appreciative.   Thanks.

  6. I want to get back to the UK for early / mid September so I don't lack time to plan nor (for this purpose) money.   I have a small apartment with no garden in England and 14 days with no going out (particularly coming from Samui with no covid) seems severe.   Hoping that there is a chance that the UK govt will change this silly policy but if not ...  I wondered where I could have a fourteen day holiday en route home?  That is a country which will allow me to arrive from Thailand without quarantine and stay for fourteen days that the UK will then accept me from without need to stay home.   Very open and looking for lovely options with good weather.   Any ideas please?   If there are any countries ...

  7. We've had a home in Thailand for 15 years but never spent more than 90 days here.  The new visa rules meant we could no longer get the multiple entry visa with 90 days allowance we are used to but needed to get an annual retirement visa - all done.  With the changes in the world we are planning to stay here six months for the first time without leaving.  I know I have to report to immigration every 90 days but I believe before leaving the country I need to get a re-entry permit.  Question how long in advance (flight is booked) can I get this permission - i.e. we are reporting for the first time in June for 90 days - can I apply for the re-entry permit at the same time for leaving in September?    Also the visa lapses in January.  I believe we can only extend in Thailand not the UK - is this correct?  If we are still in the UK will we need to jump through the same hoops again?  Thanks so much in anticipation and also any other advice for managing this visa would be appreciated.

  8. I have read the relevant advice on the site however still have a doubt and wonder if anyone could give me comfort. My husband and I are moving to a house we are having built in Thailand. We will not work and are entering under the 6 month tourist visa program. Our entire income is derived from UK dividends and our subsistence will be paid for by UK or offshore credit cards. We would like to stay in Thailand for around 8 months a year over 2/3 visits but not if it means we will be resident for tax purposes. We are non resident for tax in the UK. Can I stay more than 180 days without incurring tax ?
