  1. Any word on METV? It expires in late Sept. The initial plan was to border run for another 2mos in Sept and extend that 1 month to get me to Dec. but now I’m here on amnesty. Also what are my chances of changing my METV to Non-O guardian without going back to my home country? I’m parent to a half Thai child who’s enrolled in school already. Thanks I know there’s no concrete answers but any guesses? I’m in Chiang Mai

  2. I'm well aware of the different stories etc as to why all caucasians are called farang here and that it usually isn't used in a derogatory way but it does annoy me on occasion, how about you? To have a specific name for people based on skin colour is frowned upon in most countries yet here it is accepted. It wasn't so long ago that all people of African origin were labelled as n*****s and there are specific words to describe Asians and South Americans too but they are seldom used these days.

I was recently called Khun Farang in a government office even though they knew my name, similar story on a recent hospital visit. I hear it at schools, shopping centers, restaurants and even on the daft TV shows my wife likes to watch. It really doesn't bother me that much but on occasion I'd rather be called by my name if they know it or be asked my name so they can call me by my name instead of just 'farang'!

I'm mixed, African American (as brown as Obama) and I'm referred to as farang just as much as any fair skinned Swede or Brit. So it's not about color. And please educate me…when did "we" refer to Africans as n****rs?

  3. There are 5 McDonalds. drunk.gif

Because contrary to what you see on tv, we are more conservative than Europeans and the like. When we take our family's on vacation we're not comfortable w the in your face prostitution like you see in Phuket. We also come for the culture and I can't think of another area w as many temples and national parks as CM. So I guess you can say we are Thai like in that way. I also noticed the average European getting just as big as their American brothers. They must love McDonalds as much as the next "bloke". Just my observations.

  4. What is interesting about watching two big men punch each other to a pulp? I've never understood

They are 2 small men. They are boxing not beating and for the great ones, it's more like a chess match where you have to be able to execute your plan not just move a piece. But if it's not for you, it' not for you. For me personally, I enjoy watching the greatest athletes do there thing, be it tennis, racing or boxing.

  5. Thanks!

I heard channel 7 have their own boxing stadium, and entry is free. Do you know anything about this? Don't really fancy paying the 1000+ THB farang entry fee!

    cheers

Correct, Ch 7 is out beside Mor Chit BTS, Sunday afternoons only, action starts about 13:30 and usually have 5 or 6 fights.

Watching the bookies in action can at times be more fun than the boxing.

Get there early as it fills up quickly.

Hey, I hate to hijack but I was planning to do the same with some friends from back home while in BKK. So when you say get there early, what are we talking about, noon? Does it help to tip the doorman to guarantee entrance? Also is Morchit the giant weekend market? It would be nice to see both in one afternoon. OP, maybe you can chime in on your experiences at ch7 Stadium. It's funny to watch the fights on tv cause they love to give farangs in the audience lots of air time. Thanks in advance.

  6. Over the years I have accumulated 12 tourist visas in my passport (mostly from Vientiane). Im on my 2nd TV this year w extensions. Any advice on where to go for 1 more TV? I read Penang has a 3 TVs in 1 year rule so technically it sounds like I qualify and Im in Phuket so it's a cheap flight. Anybody have 1st hand experience there w a passport full of visas? One more visa should do the trick for me as I will be changing my status in the near future. Also if Im denied can I do back to back border crossings by air for 60 days? Thanks in advance!

  7. I seriously doubt you can travel upcountry without a passport and I would not even be thinking about it. But it has been about 35 years since I was last there so perhaps things have changed a bit. :whistling:

I would expect visa to be available on next workday afternoon if submitted in morning. The one time this happened to me (in Penang) they processed everyone the same day as a holiday goodwill gesture. But I would not expect that.

Lucky you. OK I'll stick w my original plan of Wed morn drop, Thurs aftn p/u and take a hit with the airfare changes. Thanks!
