  1. Should not be a problem if you qualify for a tourist visa - normal is submit morning and pick up next afternoon.

One more scenario, since I'm having a hard time changing my air ticket. What if I drop my documents off on May 4th, will they be ready May 6th, the day after the holiday? And if so, would it be safe to travel (w/o passport) outside of Vientiane, maybe Luang Prabang? Thanks in advance.

  2. I need to go for a tourist visa run before May 7. The problem is Monday May 2 is Thai Labor Day(observed) and Thursday May 5 is Coronation Day. So is it possible to drop my passport off on Tues May 3 and pick it up the next day May 4? In theory I imagine it's possible but I'm curious what others have experienced in getting stuff done around the holidays. I really don't want to get hung up in Vientiane for an extra day or weekend. Thanks

  3. I couldn't get a confirm on some of the places mentioned but I got a definite answer from Dribbles Bar on Tanai Rd in Kata. Nice lady named Get runs it. She's got a Super Bowl banner out front...said she'll open at 630a w American breakfast too. There's also an American owned cabana style bar down the street that will be open.

  4. So where are the EVs and conversions in Thailand? Is it not cost effective (I have solar panels)? Is it a D.O.T thing? How do they treat EVs? I would love to convert one of these old Beetles, Toyotas or even a Vespa that you see all over Chiang Mai; a classic with reliability and performance. Does anyone know the fees and logistics to bring parts in from China? They sell lithium batteries there that can get you 250 miles on one charge and won't cost you a fortune.

  5. I second the Coffee Pot, good breakfast, Aussie style. For many years the Karon Cafe had been my regular breakfast point, but seems to have gone downhill this past year or so (and no nearby parking). Now I go to the Coffee Pot. Kata main road just past the traffic lights and before the PTT gas station.

I just tried The Coffee Pot based on what I read here. I enjoyed the Aussie style part of my breakfast with baked beans but I will NOT be going back based on service. No substitutions ok no biggie so I got a side of hash browns but they were frozen from another day(confirmed by waiter) and they wouldn't give me a glass of water to wash the crappy potatoes down with(only bottled) even though a fresh pitcher was already out nearby nor would they give my friend extra ice for his beverage. In fact the waiter and owner(I believe) started barking across the whole empty place at me about Everything Not Free Free. So I finished my breakfast, went to 7 eleven and bought the cheap scape a bag of ice. Don't they know Americans tip big? Go'day mate.

I miss Don's breakfast in Nai Harn.

  7. So the 135cc Nouvo has been out for a couple years now and I'm wondering if there is any talk of a new model in the works? I'd hate to buy one now only to have a new model come out later this year. Seems like styling and performance updates would be needed in order to compete w the Honda PCX.

  8. :) I have parked my motorbike there for up to one week, no problem. This is sample textis iThis is sample texts sample text[/b]

Thanks. I just got back from my trip with no parking problems. For scooters it's free, secured, overnight parking but not covered. If anyone is worried about the elements, you can find a spot under a tree.

  9. Loads of great info..thnx everyone. I have a 4:50p AirAsia flt to Phuket from Undon on the same day I p/u my visa. Where exactly do I find the mini van at the border back to the airport? Everyone describes in detail where it is at the airport but what about the times and location for coming back? Would you go direct from the consulate to the border or go to the bus station in town to get a bus to Udon or what, Im not sure but know I wont have time to mess around. Also off topic, has anyone parked a motorcycle at Phuket airport overnight? I called, the airport and a lady told me it was free but Im not confident in her answer that she meant long term parking. FYI- yes there is a new direct flight from Phuket to Udon..nice!

  10. I just got delivery of a package I ordered to amazon but could not retrieve it because I didn't have enough cash at home for the duty and VAT charged. Total value is 22,759 Baht including shipment and insurance and they seem to apply 30% flat rate on everything (CIF) and with 7% VAT it ended up being over 9,000 baht. DHL's shipment details says the contents to be "blue ray discs" but there are 11 items in the package and only 1 is BR, there's also 1 DVD box set and 9 others are music CDs. It's not the first time that I received packages in a value totalling 20,000 baht but I never had to pay duty + VAT in excess of 2,000 baht and never paid anything when the items consisted of only music CDs or books. Is there really a import duty on music CD and can they really apply a flat rate of 30% on the total value of the package?

Optical media (CD's DVD's and BluRay) should all get 30 + 7% anyway..

Books are free.. But if you put one DVD in the box of 20 books you pay the rate on the entire invoice.. Thats how they they always billed me anyway.

I have never been dutied when I only had CDs to receive. Other times I received some 10 box sets of DVDs but no duty or VAT, nothing. And when they did, it was a negligible amount (like a thousand baht on 20,000 baht total). Was I just lucky? It seemed so random before.

So I shouldn't mix even one disc of DVD when I have 10 books to order to amazon?

When you order multiple items (new and/or used) are you paying shipping on each item or is there some way to get combined shipping? Thanks

  11. Do any of the major department stores in Thailand have websites to shop online ie BigC, Central, Carrefour etc? I was hoping to create a baby gift registry online. That way friends and family from back home can buy gifts easily with out all the hassle and expense of post. What about gift cards for in-store pick ups? Any info would help. Thanks

  12. I can't get any news on Tiger Woods on Thai tv re his late night accident. Of course I can find lots on the net but I want to see how the story unfolds in Thailand. He is the number one most recognized athlete in the world, making more than double the #2 athlete. Why is he not a mega star here in Thailand? What do you think?

addendum: ok it's 4 days after the incident and I'm just starting to get snippets on sports programs, not regular news and even then it's a 2nd segment story.

  13. I just made a 1 mo reservation at Hillside 4 for a studio facing Doi Suthep. I arrive in the middle of the month and leave in the middle of the month. Are they going to try to get me for 2 full months even though I'll be there 30days? Ive heard this happens in CM. And what about getting my 1 mo deposit back, is that going to be a pain too? Any other warnings, room selection and recommendations welcome. Thanks

  14. Hey,

I'm going to be making a similar trip to Chiang Mai myself in December to get a break from high season in Phuket. I've narrowed my choices down to The Dome and Hillside 4. Both are condotel types in trendy neighborhoods favored by expats and CMU students. Not my taste for long term but perfect for being fresh off the plane. Good luck.
