  1. Hello to you all,

I help run a visa company in Thailand and because of all the recent changes, amendments to the new regulations I feel the need for some much needed staff training. I am looking to put a short quiz together about the present visa rules in Thailand and require some suggestions. Nothing to complicated as the staff are Thai. Some examples being:

How many border runs can a person do in a 6 month period?

A man enters Thailand on the 1st October and leaves for England 10 days later on the 11th October. He returns to Thailand on January 14th for another holiday and comes to our office on 13th February to do a border run. The man has been in Thailand for a total of 40 days in 180 days. How many days will the man receive at the border?

Add questions (and answers if you like)

    Many thanks in advance

  2. You guys crack me up. I wasn't thinking about setting up a window cleaning business myself, I even mentioned that in my post, some of you need to take greater care when reading. Stop w**king, that will improve your eyesight at least.

I was merely putting a suggestion forward that someone might be interested in looking into. Surely it makes a refreshing change from someone posting "I want to set up a beer bar, any advice?"

Fair enough it may not be the most desirable job in the world but surely you guys didnt think that the person setting up the business would actually clean the windows, when a thai would do that for 200 baht a day. What planet are you on?

I think some of you really do need to spend a little bit more time outside and not in front of your computer

  3. Hello to everbody,

Anybody thought about setting up a window cleaning business in Pattaya, I know we have tip top but don't know much about them, have they got a window cleaning round going on? Set up costs wouldn't be a lot but there are a few major factors against it that I can see, 2 of them being:

    - most people have bars on their windows making them very hard to clean

    - and window cleaners generally clean windows once a month often when people are not home, don't know if that one would go down too well

Its not something that I would set up but it just came to me and thought somebody might want to give it go

  4. Hello to you all,

My reason for posting this blog was because as a professional golfer myself and having played golf in Thailand for a number of years I was looking into starting a mini professional golf tour running before the main seasons start in Europe, American, Oz etc but it seems that work permits would be a major problem a may need to rethink. However, Sunbelt if you could come up with a reasonable solution I think I will go ahead with it. The tour would run for approximately 12 weeks.

  5. I would advice her to buy the books of B.P. Becker and read them. My Thai wife also has real university degree but she can't teach me Thai, because she doesn't know the problems foreigners encounter when studying Thai.

The books explain the tones rules. Thai people don't know what rising tone or falling tone is, they use other names for the tones and other ways to remember or explain them. The books provide a logical way to structure her courses.

Not all Thai people with a "real" university degree are good in English. if she doesn't have a masters or bachelor degree in English it might be useful if she studies a bit more English (for explaining the grammar, not the vocabulary).

I've followed a Thai course in Pattaya and I was a bit disappointed. The teacher only seemed to have experience with teaching abosulute beginners. She couldn't put any structure into the course.

Thanks for the replies so far, she is only looking to teach conversation at the moment but maybe progress to teaching reading and writing later, we'll see. Oh and she is reading the becker book atm, very useful but any others any of you know?

  6. Hi to you all,

My girlfriend is wanting to teach thai to forgeiners in pattaya. She has a university degree (yes a proper one before anyone comments) and obviously speaks reasonable English but she has no prior teaching experience. Does anybody have any advice regarding books to buy, sample lesson plans etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  7. Take your blinkers off, there are more than 3 shelves of long term visitors in Thailand.

    Here is another.

Here is another... those that have work back in the UK for 6 mths of the year (during summer - one is a farming contractor, another is a tour bus driver, another is a builder), that work hard in the UK for 6 months of the year so they can blow all their hard-earned cash in Thailand for the other six months of the year (typically Oct-Apr). I know at least one of these guys has already had to book his ticket home before Christmas this year due to these rules and won't be spending half as much money there this year as the years before.

Well he is an idiot then, he should have got a tourist visa from the UK before he left. People have no pity for the unprepared. This blog is for people with real issues, who require advise.

  8. I think the value of the western farang is about to be understood.

The value of the western farang who comes here to do legitimate business or has the financial resources to obtain a retirement visa or comes as a tourist is already understood and Thailand continues to welcome them.

The western farang who hasn't the resources to do anything other than scurry across the border every 30 days before returning to some work that generates minimal income but no foreign exchange is also understood, which is why they want them to go home.

    YOU ARE WRONG WRONG WRONG

The only people the Thais can view in this light are the old or the working.

I am 37, not married to a Thai, Independently wealthy, do not work here in Thailand. I return to my home country, wish to stay here for 11 months of the year. There are no provisions for this situation.

Take your blinkers off, there are more than 3 shelves of long term visitors in Thailand.

    Here is another.

My friends is retired here and married. His daughter recently from the UK has had problems, so my friend has invited his daughter to stay with him here in Jomtien so she can take some time out of life. The only visa she can obtain is a 3 month tourist visa.

Her father is wealthy and can keep her financially. She will not be working, But after 3 months will need to return to England. Where is the provision for this.

This new rules will cost more than Thailand ever imagined. It will hurt many individual Thai families, local economies, business both small and large, government Tax.

    Here is another.

Wealthy travelers, between commitments (maybe redundant with cash) in the west visits southeast asia with the thought of traveling throughout. Get to Thailand and decide to stay and not visit the other countries. After three months has to leave. Cannot be bothered to go back to their home country so just continue with their travels around asia taking spending money in other countries.

    Here is another

Student 12 months traveling, same as above

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE WORLD HAS MANY DIFFERNET PEOPLE WISHING TO TRAVEL THAT CANNOT NOW STAY IN THAILAND LONG TERM. And the biggest loser will be Thailand

Surely that is a contradiction in terms, how are you traveling if you are staying somewhere for a long time? However Id like to offer you some advice, if you are independently wealthy, use your wealth and knowledge to explore ways of legally staying in Thailand. I will never understand people that stay in this great country and refuse to do I little work to make their stay legal. It is very easy to set up a company and obtain a work permit. You don't even have to do anything just pay someone to do it for you.

You can look into this, which is very simple or go home and deal with the red tape which your own country has to offer. Can anybody please let me know if there is any other desirable country in the world that will allow you to stay indefinitely without a visa?

    Regards

  11. To you all,

Im sick and tried of employing unskilled staff, can anybody help me find information about where I can recruit university graduates. I am based in pattaya so it seems to be very difficult here.

    Ruds

About 500-700 students graduate from our university English Major program every March. Many of them minor in business or computer-related studies. I think I could recommend some exceptional candidates from that pool. Since they are from Isan, most would be thrilled with a 10,000 baht monthly salary. (Twice the salary rate paid in Isaan). If you think I can help you, PM me with type of work available, company history, and skills required.

Toptuan I emailed you a few days ago but I havent had a reply. Just wondering if you are still interested in sorting something out?

Sounds very promising. How would I go about recruiting from your university. I am looking for someone with knowledge and mircosoft excel, word etc but I have many friends with businesses who would love to employ university graduates. I actually have a friend who has a recruitment agency and he would love for you to help him with recruiting university qualified staff. We are all falang owned businesses so we dont really know how to recruit decent staff.

  13. To you all,

My girlfriend is looking to come to malaysia with me on my next visa trip but she hasnt got a passport. Where can she get one? and how much do they cost? how quickly can she get one?

    Ruds

Best place is the main passport office at Chaeng Wattana in BKK.

I think it takes 48 hours and costs approx 1000 baht.

Here is a link with details of offices and what documents she needs....

  14. To you all,

I am currently working in Thailand with a work permit but I am in the process of setting up a business. I am looking to work in my current position, which is for somebody else but also assist in my new venture, my question being is it possible to get 2 work permits?

    Ruds

If it is inside the same province. They use the same work permit but put two different locations of work.

The work permit for the second job will be the same as the first application. Everything is the same steps.

Ok but what if the nature of the work is totally different?

  15. Thankyou to you all for your comments, very interesting. Im am still going to go despite the expense. Its safe to say I will not be dining there every night but I dont think that is the intent of the owners, from my understanding this is classy place where you would expect to pay top dollar. If the quality is good I dont mind paying.

    thanks again
