  1. From what I have seen the PADI dive school use the promise of employment as a way to draw more funds from their students and sell them on becoming dive masters. There is rarely a promise of getting a work permit so the students stay longer to get the required dives in work on the cheap, drink their beers in the divers round circle debating deep dive and best coral dive sights then eventually leave and the cycle starts again.

  2. IMO land is not all the same even if it is 1600 square meters. Chanote title with Water, electric, government roads, sea views, and location near beaches, golf and shopping results in a rai of land worth 4 to 6 times more than a
Plot of land in the middle of a pineapple grove with no infrastructure or chanote land title.
  3. By vertue of size Phucket has running cost that the smaller Samui island does not. By its close location to the mainland and Bangkok Phucket offers savings the Samui does not match. Food, entertainment are on par price wise.

  4. I can sympathize with the OP, chances are his GF is also a major part of his social network, guide, translator, and lover. His heart wants to believe her and his gut tells him she is not being honest. This is a cross roads for most travelers that can determine our success as an expat. Do we learn to trust our BS meter or override it and see what happens. I over rode mine and I got bitten the good news is from that mistake I learned to trust my instincts from that point forward and in the process grew to know that i could trust my alarm system and my judgment.

  5. I'll pipe in on this because quite frankly the OP described how I felt about Thai men, Thai govt, Thai life most of the 14 yrs I lived there. I lived in Bali for 4 yrs and never felt the contempt for Indo that I felt for LOS. I often times felt in prison by my own design ie heavily invested, beautiful wife and family yet it all came with the daily hassle that I knew as Thailand. Finally my children reached the goal age to study abroad and I was set free. I have been away for 18 mo's and quite frankly I can not make myself get on the plane to join my family for even a short return trip to Thailand. I'm worn out and really don't need the hassle when life is so easy in the west. I'm out I'm gone and I don't know if I will return. IMO there are too many choices in the world that offer good weather, good food, friendly natives and beautiful women to return to a place that frustrates me at every turn.
