  1. On a recent 3-day trip to Nan in the North I did not see a single plastic bag or other litter discarded anywhere. Early one morning outside the Guest House in a small Soi in Nan where I was staying, there was someone sweeping the Soi with a jacket saying "Volunteer" on it. Everything was neat and tidy.

Compare that to the situation near my condo at Cha-Am to the South. Plastic bags and rubbish in large amounts strewn everywhere beside the roads. It's a disgrace.

Maybe the North/South divide is more than just politics.

By the way, I was pleasantly surprised by the general prosperity of Nan and even (surprisingly) in the remoter areas in the vicinity like Pua and Chiang Klang. There was even a Tesco-Lotus in the latter town. Many road works in progress in the area. I don't believe the support for Phua Thai is due to the alleged vote buying to any significant extent. No doubt there is poverty in the remote areas, but even at the end of the road near the border with Laos I did not see any extreme poverty.

I do not support any political faction - I'm only reporting my observations.

just drive a little south of Cha am to kiri kan and the sois are spotless
  2. For all those posters who appear to be from the occupy Wall Street clan. When you think if foraign policy and greed history proves thet spoils have always been a factor in expansion and exploration. Roman Empire, Genghis khan, British Empire, French, Russians, Dutch, Swedan, India, China come to think of it has any country ever done anything for nothing?

  3. Hua Hin is a great family friendly holiday destination if you stay in a star rated property such as the sofetel and don't go on the cheap. Golf is arguably the number one reason people travel to HH it has some good sea food, horse riding on the beach for the kids, the palace and some hidden beaches a little south.

  4. Ok I'll confess I typically paint a few characters with the same broad stroke of a brush and I am sure there are some really nice honest people in the groups I slagg having said that I believe it would be best to simply avoid them than try to find the good apples. Thai beach boys, bar girls, lady boys, too name a few.

  5. Honestly it seems to be any bodies guess with almost all of the Asian currencies. The indo ruphia has moved from 8700 to 10,000 to the green back for years now the Thai baht has moved to under 30 and almost over 40 and my best guess is it will settle in at around 29 to 31 sooner than later.

  6. Once you open an account in the USA Bank of America seems to be one of the quickest and least costly I have found. I think I pay 15.00 US dollars regardless of the amount. The big hit is on the conversion from baht to dollar which is also known as currencies trading and I do not have a Midas touch for picking the right time for this. I have had the baht get strong minutes after I had converted and before I had transferred.:(

  7. I had some rental properties and always held my tenants to the terms of the agreement if they'd end early because for whatever reason and I was able to rent their unit I gave them a refund. If they left someone to mind the property while they were away I had mo problem but I was not going to chase anyone else for utility bills. Any unpaid bills and damage came from the deposit.

  8. Yes, although i like to watch real football, you know where they actually use the foot rather than the hands, i am sure that Premier bar will find what you are looking for if you ask for John or Ian.

it always amuses me when the topic of football and soccer comes on line from time to time, it seems too many islanders get their panties in a bunch over such a simple name for a sport. Gridiron or football makes perfect spence to me as the player must foot (run) the ball down the field. My sons soccer matches are full of people screaming "kick" the ball so IMO soccer would be better served by calling it "kick ball"
