  1. UPDATE Death Toll Rises to 18 in Prachinburi Tour Bus Crash, 32 Injured Pictures from responders The death toll from the bus crash in Prachinburi province has risen to 18, with 32 others confirmed injured, following an update from emergency response centre. Initial reports confirmed 17 fatalities, but another victim succumbed to their injuries at 08:34 bringing the total number of deaths to 18. A temporary mortuary has been set up for relatives to collect the dead. According to authorities, 19 of the injured passengers are being treated at Nadi Hospital, while 13 others have been admitted to Kabin Buri Hospital. Some victims are reported to be in critical condition. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with preliminary concerns focusing on the steep descent, potential mechanical failure, and driver fatigue. Highway 304, a crucial connection between the eastern and northeastern regions of Thailand, is known for its challenging terrain and history of accidents, particularly on the mountain section where the crash occurred. In response to the tragedy, the Prachinburi Provincial Road Safety Centre has urged relevant agencies to intensify road safety measures, including stricter vehicle inspections and additional warning signs on hazardous stretches of highway. Officials have also pledged to work closely with transport authorities to try to prevent similar incidents. -- 2025-02-26
  2. UPDATE Bus Crash on Thai Mountain Road Kills 17 Picture from responders A devastating bus accident on Thailand’s Khao San Pu Ton mountain road in Prachinburi province has claimed the lives of 17 people, with many others injured. The bus, carrying a group from the Phran Charoen subdistrict municipality in Bueng Kan, overturned in the early hours of the morning due to brake failure. The crash occurred at approximately 03:00 on February 26. Local police, emergency responders, and rescue teams arrived at the scene to find the Scania bus overturned on its side, with its roof torn apart and severe damage throughout the vehicle. Authorities closed the downhill section of the road to manage the rescue operation. Initial reports suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure. The tour group was part of a study visit on waste bank management, travelling to Rayong province. The convoy consisted of three buses carrying around 200 people in total, with the ill-fated vehicle being the third in the group. According to eyewitnesses, the bus struck road barriers along a 100-metre stretch before crashing. Emergency responders discovered several victims trapped beneath the wreckage, while others were thrown from the vehicle. Of the 49 passengers on board, 16 died at the scene, with another succumbing to injuries at Nadi Hospital. There was also a driver and bus boy onboard at the time of the crash. Medical teams transported the injured to several nearby hospitals, including Nadi Hospital and Kabin Buri Hospital. Some passengers suffered severe head injuries, fractured bones, and lacerations, while others complained of chest pains and back injuries. One witness, a lorry driver following the bus, recounted how he saw the vehicle struggling to control its speed before the crash. Authorities suspect that the driver may have skipped a mandatory stop at a designated checkpoint, which could have contributed to the brakes overheating. The Khao Pu Thon descent is notorious for crashes, with frequent reports of crashes on the steep and winding section of road. Authorities have repeatedly warned drivers to follow safety protocols, particularly in checking their brakes before descending. Local officials, including Nadi District Chief Somchai Phutthasena, confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine whether negligence or mechanical failure was responsible for the tragedy. -- 2025-02-26 ScreenRecording_02-26-2025%2007-47-41_1.mp4

  6. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Thai waters when a Vietnamese fishing boat deliberately rammed a Royal Thai Navy patrol vessel after being caught illegally fishing in Thailand’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The incident led to the arrest of five crew members, while several other illegal fishing vessels managed to escape. At approximately 17:00 on 25 February, the Royal Thai Navy’s HTMS Thepha and patrol boat Tor.246 towed seized Vietnamese fishing vessels into Khlong Yai’s multipurpose pier in Trat province. Rear Admiral Apha Chaphanon, Director of Thailand’s First Maritime Enforcement Command Centre (Thai-MECC 1) and Commander of the First Naval Area Command, held a press conference alongside Rear Admiral Chaiyanan Chumai to detail the operation. According to Rear Admiral Apha, Thai-MECC 1, in coordination with the First Naval Area Command, the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Protection Command, and the Navy Intelligence Department, had been monitoring the activities of a group of around ten foreign fishing vessels since 22 February. These vessels, which included pair trawlers, purse seiners nets and light squid boats, were detected repeatedly entering Thai waters under the cover of darkness before retreating southward during the day. On 24 February, intelligence reports confirmed the presence of these illegal fishing operations. Thai authorities deployed HTMS Thepha and Tor.264, along with aerial reconnaissance, to intercept the vessels. During the operation, one fishing boat was successfully seized along with its four-member crew. The remaining vessels accelerated and fled beyond Thailand’s EEZ. However, in that desperate bid to evade capture, one Vietnamese fishing boat turned and rammed the side of HTMS Thepha, causing minor structural damage to the naval vessel. In response, Thai authorities fired M16 warning shots in accordance with international maritime procedures before successfully detaining the boat and five crew members. Rear Admiral Apha stated that illegal fishing by Vietnamese vessels has been a persistent issue, particularly in the operational area of the Second Naval Area Command in the southern Gulf of Thailand. This incident marks the first successful interception of such activity in the First Naval Area Command’s jurisdiction in 2025. The Royal Thai Navy has vowed to intensify enforcement efforts against illegal fishing and will notify the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally raise the matter with the Vietnamese government. -- 2025-02-26

  8. Picture captured from CCTV. A funeral pray evening, in Chanthaburi province descended into chaos when a drunk man stormed the ceremony and opened fire, sending mourners fleeing in terror. A brave bystander who tried to intervene was struck by a stray bullet before guests overpowered the gunman and handed him over to the police. The incident occurred at approximately 22:50 on February 24 at Thung Phle Temple in Makham district, where funeral prays were taking place. Pol Lt Winij Simali, deputy investigator at Makham Police Station, received a report of gunfire and a resulting injury. Emergency responders from the Sawang Katanyu Rescue Association were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim who had been shot in the buttock. CCTV footage from inside the funeral hall captured the entire event. Preliminary investigations led police to arrest the gunman, identified as Mr. Ekkarin, also known as “Moo,” who was subdued by relatives and other mourners before officers arrived. His accomplice, Mr. Somchai Mahantawari, also known as “Nuk,” who had driven him to the scene, was also taken into custody. Investigators found bullet holes in the temple’s floor and a bloodstain on the ground. A chair had also been pierced by a bullet. The weapon used was a .38 calibre revolver, which was seized along with five spent shell casings and two intact bullets found at the scene. A further four rounds of ammunition were discovered inside the suspect’s vehicle. Both suspects later confessed to the crime. Police have charged them with attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a firearm in a public place, and discharging a firearm without justification. Despite the severity of the charges, both men were granted temporary release on bail. The injured victim, identified as Mr. Paiboon, was attending the funeral as a relative of the deceased. He was also the gunman’s uncle and had attempted to restrain him during the attack. He remains in Makham Hospital, where his condition is reported as stable. According to Mr. Thairat, 52, another attendee, the confrontation began when Ekkarin, who appeared intoxicated, arrived at the funeral with Somchai. He allegedly slapped an elderly man on the head and harassed another guest. When relatives intervened to stop him, a heated exchange ensued, prompting the two men to leave. Before departing, they revved their car engine loudly in an apparent act of intimidation. Shortly after, the pair returned. Ekkarin initially apologised to the mourners, leading them to believe the matter was resolved. However, moments later, he retrieved a firearm from the vehicle and fired two random shots into the gathering, sending guests scrambling for cover. Mr. Paiboon, who was nearby, lunged at the gunman and managed to wrestle him to the ground with help from other mourners. During the struggle, three more rounds were discharged, one of which struck Paiboon. The group managed to disarm and restrain Ekkarin until police arrived. Mr. Wirachai, 50, the funeral host, expressed deep concern over the suspects’ release on bail, fearing they may return to seek revenge. He urged authorities to take the case seriously, stressing that the attack was an audacious act of violence that endangered many innocent people, including children and elderly guests. Residents are calling for strict legal action to ensure justice is served and to prevent further threats to community safety. -- 2025-02-26

  10. Picture from responders A 55-year-old man narrowly escaped possible death after being viciously attacked by a swarm of hornets while fishing near a roadside canal in Ang Thong province. The victim, later identified as Mr. Sarayut, suffered severe reaction effects and was left unconscious before being rescued and rushed to hospital. At around 18:00 on February 25, emergency responders from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation received a distress call reporting that a man had collapsed after being repeatedly stung by hornets. The incident occurred near the entrance of Wat Ton Son Municipal School, along the Ang Thong-Sing Buri Road in Talat Luang, Mueang District. Upon arrival, rescuers found the man lying unconscious on the roadside, dressed in shirt and shorts. After reviving him, he recounted that he had been fishing in the canal when he accidentally disturbed a hornet nest hidden inside a drainage pipe. In a panic, he abandoned his fishing net and basket, fleeing more than 100 metres calling for help, before collapsing. First responders noted multiple sting wounds across his body and head, indicating a severe reaction to the venom. He was given immediate first aid before being transported to Ang Thong Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Following the incident, a rescue volunteer named Mr. Boy inspected the drainage pipe where the attack had occurred. He confirmed the presence of a large underground hornet nest inside the concrete pipe. It is believed that the vibration caused by the man’s movements triggered the aggressive response from the swarm. At the scene, the man’s abandoned fishing net and container, holding two live fish, were found near the roadside. Local authorities have been alerted to assess the safety of the area and take necessary action to remove the nest. -- 2025-02-26

In a shocking incident on 25 February, in Uthai Thani, a 17-year-old boy, referred to only as “A” has been arrested after allegedly stabbing his 49-year-old uncle, Mr. Banjong, to death. The attack, which occurred at a home in the Namuap sub-district of Lansak district, has left the local community in shock. According to witnesses, the incident unfolded while the victim was sitting outside, enjoying a soft drink. Eyewitness reports indicate that A approached the victim after hearing him cough and shouted a vulgar insult. The victim responded defensively, asking what A’s issue was, which led to a confrontation. As tensions escalated, Mr. Banjong attempted to retreat to the kitchen to grab a knife for self-defense, as his son was cooking nearby. However, A allegedly seized the opportunity to attack, using a folding knife to stab his uncle multiple times in the back of the neck, causing severe bleeding. He then reportedly stomped on the victim repeatedly. Despite efforts from Mr. Banjong’s family to rush him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, A was found hiding in the bathroom and reportedly took around 30 minutes to emerge before being taken into custody. Authorities confirmed that A had a history of violent behaviour, including a previous stabbing incident in the village, which had instilled fear among residents. Mr. Banjong’s wife, Mrs. Daorueng, expressed her anguish and called for justice, urging A’s parents to take responsibility for their son’s actions and to support the victim’s family financially during this difficult time. She highlighted the ongoing issues with A’s behaviour, noting his habit of drinking kratom and his propensity for violence when under the influence, which has made the community wary of him. Mrs. Daorueng pleaded for authorities to take this case seriously and ensure that A is held accountable for his actions to prevent further tragedies in the community. -- 2025-02-26

  16. Picture captured from CCTV. A violent brawl erupted at the Krabi Bus Terminal, leaving a former professional boxer with a broken nose after a confrontation with security guards and motorcycle taxi drivers. The altercation, which took place at 10:00 on 25 February, prompted police from Mueang Krabi Police Station and emergency responders to rush to the scene. The injured man, Mr. Narong Boonchan, 41, a former boxer known as “Saddam Kiattayongyut”, was found bloodied and bruised, waiting for authorities. He received first aid before being taken to hospital for further treatment. According to Mr. Narong, the incident began when he rode his motorcycle to the station to buy a ticket for a trip to Bangkok. He parked his motorcycle in front of the bus terminal sign, noticing that other bikes were already parked there. Shortly after, he was approached by both motorcycle taxi drivers and a security guard, who told him he was not allowed to park there. Narong questioned why others were allowed to park while he was not, leading to a heated exchange. He claimed that one of the security guards then approached him holding a baton, prompting him to walk towards the guard. The guard retreated to his post, but Narong followed to continue the discussion. It was at this moment, he alleged, that he was struck from behind before being set upon by a group of 6-7 men, including motorcycle taxi drivers. The altercation left him with a broken nose, torn clothing, and missing glasses. Despite his injuries, Narong has issued a challenge to those involved, stating that he will drop all charges if they agree to a one-on-one fight. However, he intends to press charges if they refuse. Mr. Wutthichai, a security guard involved in the incident, gave a different version of events. He claimed that Narong parked in a restricted area and was approached by motorcycle taxi drivers who told him to move. This led to a verbal altercation, during which Narong allegedly used offensive language and insulted their families. According to Wutthichai, Narong then attempted to attack them, prompting the security guards and taxi drivers to defend themselves, leading to the brawl. Mr. Praphan, 68, a motorcycle taxi driver, supported this account, saying that the area was reserved for official vehicles. When they asked Narong to move, he allegedly became aggressive and attempted to assault the security guard first, forcing them to intervene. In response to the incident, Mr. Opas Chutamat, the Bus Terminal Manager, stated that security footage captured the entire altercation. He denied that the security guards initiated the fight. -- 2025-02-26

  18. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Police in Region 8 have launched a large-scale operation targeting illegal nominee businesses, with raids conducted at 29 locations across seven provinces. Koh Samui was a focus of one part of the operation, with seven key targets subjected to searches. On February 25, officers from Region 8 Police, in collaboration with immigration authorities, tourist police, and forensic teams, carried out raids aimed at uncovering foreign-owned businesses operating unlawfully under Thai nominees. The operation was part of an ongoing effort to crack down on foreign nationals using Thai citizens as proxies to own and manage businesses in the country. The investigation stemmed from a complaint filed on February 28, 2024, by the Koh Samui Municipality, which accused a company of illegally encroaching on land in Chaweng Noi, Bo Phut sub-district. The company, which was constructing luxury villas under the name “Sea Breeze,” was suspected of violating the Building Control Act B.E. 2522 (1979) and engaging in nominee business practices. Further investigations revealed that the project was owned by a German national and facilitated by a legal office that had allegedly helped foreign investors set up over 160 companies in Koh Samui. These businesses spanned various sectors, including luxury villas, rental properties, restaurants, and tourism-related services. As part of the crackdown, police conducted searches at seven key locations on Koh Samui, including the law office in question. Authorities discovered that 167 companies had been registered under this single office’s address, raising suspicions of widespread nominee arrangements. Seized evidence included company registration documents, financial records, tax filings, employment contracts, and computer hard drives. Thai law prohibits foreign individuals from owning more than 49% of a company in restricted industries, such as real estate and tourism services. However, many foreign investors circumvent this restriction by using Thai nationals as shareholders on paper while retaining full control of the business. Authorities have vowed to intensify efforts to identify and dismantle such arrangements, particularly in major tourist hotspots like Koh Samui, where foreign investment in property and hospitality is significant. This latest crackdown underscores the Thai government’s commitment to enforcing laws that protect local businesses and ensure that foreign investments comply with legal frameworks. -- 2025-02-26

He was subsequently transported to the Police Hospital for urgent medical attention. The assailant, identified only as “Phao” , was found at the scene in a state of shock, with a sharp knife lying nearby. The confrontation escalated, leading to Phao retrieving the knife he had brought with him and stabbing Tor twice. Following the incident, police took Phao into custody for questioning, and a multidisciplinary team was assembled to handle the legal proceedings. Authorities are now working to determine the appropriate charges in this distressing case. -- 2025-02-26

In a desperate bid to escape police, he fled into a nearby school, only to trip and injure himself, leading to his capture. At around 03:00, a police patrol unit from Phaya Thai Police Station spotted Salamat Rakyat, a suspect wanted for multiple burglary offences, trying to force open the door of Maruay 95, a shop located at the Arun Phong Intersection on Rama VI Road. Upon seeing the officers, he immediately fled, scaling a fence into The Thai Women’s Association School. Police pursued him into the school grounds, where he attempted to hide near a banana tree before continuing his escape through the building. However, in his haste, he stumbled over a cafeteria table, hitting his head and sustaining minor injuries. Officers were able to apprehend him and provided first aid before taking him into custody. Upon confirming his identity, officers found that Rakyat was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court (Warrant No. 879/2025) for burglary, including breaking and entering into private residences at night. Police had been investigating a series of thefts in the Phetchaburi Soi 3 area earlier in the month and had identified Rakyat as the likely suspect. A search of his bag revealed a 21-centimetre knife, five lock-picking tools, a black patterned shirt, and a flashlight.
