  2. Picture courtesy of พัทยา จุดเกิดเหตุ A dramatic scene unfolded in central Pattaya on the afternoon of 23 June, during a bout of heavy rain, as a British man, who was not named by authorities, reportedly attempted to end his life by running barefoot into moving traffic. The incident occurred on Second Road, near Soi 11, where the man was seen behaving erratically and deliberately dashing in front of vehicles, apparently hoping to be struck. Fortunately, traffic was congested at the time and moving slowly, preventing any injuries or collisions. Local police from Pattaya City Police Station, assisted by vigilant bystanders, quickly intervened to prevent any injuries. Officers found the man appearing highly intoxicated, speaking incoherently and engaging in bizarre behaviour, including rain drinking water from a roadside drain and splashing it onto his face and body. It took police around 15 minutes to calm the man and take him into custody. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital for psychological assessment. Authorities say they are working with the British Embassy and relevant agencies to provide appropriate care and support for the individual. No injuries were reported, and police praised the action of passers-by and first responders in preventing potential harm. Adapted by Asean Now from พัทยา จุดเกิดเหตุ 2025-06-24

  4. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A road crash in front of Phrae Hospital has claimed the life of a respected former district chief, prompting an outpouring of grief from his family and the local community. At approximately 08:30 on the morning of 23 June, police were alerted to a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a private vehicle on the zebra crossing outside Phrae Hospital in Nai Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang Phrae District. Upon arrival, officers from Mueang Phrae Police Station, along with traffic police and emergency rescue teams, found a bronze Honda City with Chiang Mai registration number. The vehicle, which had impact damage on both the bonnet and windscreen, was being driven by Mr Mekhin Samphao, 46, who remained at the scene. A breathalyser test showed no trace of alcohol. The victim, later identified as 76-year-old Mr Adul Hanphongkittikul, a retired district chief and resident of Phrae Province, had sustained critical injuries while crossing the street, using a marked zebra crossing. He was rushed to Phrae Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after. Mr Adul was widely respected for his integrity and dedication throughout his public service career. He had served in multiple districts, with his final posting as district chief of Rong Kwang. Even after his retirement, he remained active in civic life, serving as a member of the Phrae Provincial Administrative Organisation Council and as an advisor to various local committees. Local authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, reviewing CCTV in the area and took the driver in for questioning. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-24

  6. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Officials from the Treasury Department in Nakhon Phanom have clarified the status of the so-called “World Scout Camp” in Nong Yat subdistrict, which has lain abandoned for nine years despite a construction budget of 35 million baht. Built in 2016 with funds from the provincial development budget, the camp, formally known as the National Scout Camp, was intended to be a major youth activity centre on a 200-rai plot of state land. The site features a two-storey administrative building comparable in size to the city district office, a canteen resembling a multi-purpose hall, standard toilet facilities, an activity ground, and a paved road encircling the site. Despite the substantial investment, the camp has never been used. Overgrown with tall grass and shrubs, it now sits idle just one kilometre from the Nakhon Phanom Office of the Auditor-General, a proximity not lost on residents, who are calling for a full investigation into what they see as a wasteful and mismanaged project. The land, part of a 32,000-rai area in Nong Yat subdistrict, was previously the subject of a land dispute before being officially declared state property in 2014 by court ruling. The site is managed by the Treasury Department of Nakhon Phanom. Ms. Siriwalee Sangkhawichian, the provincial Treasury official, stated that although the camp was completed in 2016, it has yet to be officially registered as a state asset under the Treasury’s inventory. She explained that the land can only be used by government agencies and the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Education is currently in the process of applying to use the site. However, no decision has been made by the provincial committee in charge of approving such applications. Ms. Siriwalee emphasised that other government departments are also welcome to submit proposals to utilise the camp in accordance with state property regulations. Until then, the site remains a stark reminder of unfulfilled potential and a symbol of misallocated public funds, raising difficult questions about planning, accountability and the oversight of government spending. 7. Firework Incident: Man Loses Four Fingers After Cigarette Ember Triggers Explosion Picture courtesy of Khaosod. 8. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 25-year-old man has suffered injuries after a firework exploded in his hand when a ember from a lit cigarette accidentally ignited the fuse, resulting in the amputation of four fingers. The incident occurred around 20:00 on 22 June in Moo 9, Sanam Chai subdistrict, Satuek district of Buriram province. Local rescue volunteers from Wang Krut Station responded swiftly to an emergency call reporting a serious fireworks injury. When rescue workers arrived at the scene, they found Mr Prayoon aged 25, writhing in pain with multiple fingers on his right hand shredded and bleeding profusely. The team provided immediate first aid before rushing him to Buriram Hospital, where doctors later had no choice but to amputate four fingers due to extensive bone damage and tissue loss. Ms Phut, 49, she was not present when the incident occurred but was informed by one of Mr Prayoon’s friends who brought him back home in a bloodied state. Alarmed by the extent of the injuries, she immediately called for rescue services. Ms Phut explained that Mr Prayoon and two friends had purchased fireworks from a local vendor with the intention of testing them ahead of the Buddhist Lent celebrations. “They just wanted to try out the colours and effects before using them properly during the festival,” she said. Mr Prayoon was reportedly holding the firework in his hand, intending to light it later, while smoking a cigarette. A stray ember from the cigarette is believed to have ignited the firework prematurely, causing it to explode in his grasp. The blast was so powerful it tore through his fingers, shattering bones and leaving his hand severely mutilated. Medical staff at Buriram Hospital confirmed that all four damaged fingers had to be surgically removed due to the severity of the injuries. Authorities are using this incident to reiterate the dangers of handling fireworks irresponsibly, especially in proximity to open flames such as cigarettes. Local officials are expected to issue further warnings as the Buddhist Lent period approaches, a time when fireworks are commonly used in celebrations. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-24

  10. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A small fishing boat capsized in rough seas off the coast of Phuket during the afternoon of 23 June, leading to one fisherman being rescued and another still missing as search efforts continue amid strong winds and heavy rain. The incident occurred around 16:10, approximately one kilometre off the Thasak Pier in Pa Khlok Subdistrict, Thalang District. According to the Andaman Narenthorn Centre, two local fishermen were on board the boat when it overturned due to rough conditions. One man managed to swim back to shore safely, while the other was last seen clinging to the vessel for about 20 minutes before disappearing. In response, Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, Director of the Third Naval Area Command’s Maritime Security Coordination Centre (MSCC), ordered an immediate mobilisation of search and rescue teams. Naval personnel from Phuket’s Navy base deployed inflatable boats and a patrol vessel from the MSCC was dispatched alongside a jet ski team to aid the search. Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation has also joined the operation, deploying divers and inflatable boats to assist in the rescue efforts. All relevant local agencies have been alerted and are supporting the ongoing search. However, progress has been hampered by the severe weather conditions, with officials reporting intermittent heavy rain and persistent strong waves making search operations particularly hazardous. The missing fisherman has not been found before night fall. Rescue operations through continued into the night when weather permitted. Authorities urge caution to all seafarers in the region as the rainy season continues to bring dangerous maritime conditions. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-24

  11. Cambodian Worker Missing After Entering Wastewater Pipe to Catch Fish Picture courtesy of Daily News A 35-year-old Cambodian construction worker remains missing after entering a municipal wastewater pipe in the Huai Talay area of Nakhon Ratchasima to fish. Local rescue teams launched an intensive search operation but were forced to suspend efforts due to rising water levels, prompting renewed safety warnings from local authorities. 12. Picture courtesy of Daily News A 35-year-old Cambodian construction worker remains missing after entering a municipal wastewater pipe in the Huai Talay area of Nakhon Ratchasima to fish. Local rescue teams launched an intensive search operation but were forced to suspend efforts due to rising water levels, prompting renewed safety warnings from local authorities. The incident took place on the afternoon of 22 June, when Mr Chhean Ra, employed at a nearby construction site, entered the underground drainage system with a fellow worker, Mr Eng Nan, 23, also from Cambodia. The pair had reportedly fished in the area on previous occasions during their time off. “We often come here to catch fish, it’s something we’ve done many times before,” said Mr Eng. “Mr Chhean went in first, and we agreed to meet up again in about 20 minutes. But when I came back and called for him, there was no answer. He never came out.” The pipe, which forms part of the local wastewater treatment network at Bueng Hua Talay in Hua Talay subdistrict, is around one metre in diameter and stretches for several kilometres. Officials reported that standing water inside the pipe was normally approximately 50 centimetres deep, though this rose rapidly following heavy rainfall earlier in the day. Rescue teams from the Sawang Metta Dhamma Foundation and Hua Talay Municipality launched a search shortly after receiving the alert. Divers entered the system to begin the operation. However, worsening conditions, including a strong current, poor visibility and limited air time, forced the team to suspend the search after more than four hours, citing safety concerns. Mayor Ekaphop Tomornsak of Hua Talay Municipality confirmed that operations would resume as soon as conditions improved. “We are working closely with rescue teams and technical staff to map the pipe system, identify the shallowest access points and ensure the safety of those involved in the search,” he said. The mayor also issued a stark warning to members of the public and the migrant worker community against entering drainage pipes or stormwater systems. “These pipes are extremely dangerous, especially during the rainy season. People underestimate the risks. This is not the first such incident and unless precautions are taken, it may not be the last.” The municipality has now announced plans to seal off entry points to similar pipes throughout the area to prevent future accidents. A renewed search for Mr Chhean, was scheduled to begin at 09:00 on 23 June, but due to weather safety concerns, was cancelled, as the incident is now considered a body recovery, rather than a rescue. A domestic dispute ended in tragedy when a man shot his sister-in-law dead on the steps of her home following a family argument about cooking duties for his mother. The incident occurred on 22 June, in Ban Khlong Mod Daeng, Khlong Lan District, Kamphaeng Phet province. Local police and rescue services were called to the scene after reports of gunfire at a stilted wooden house in Village 3 of Pong Nam Ron subdistrict. Officers found the lifeless body of 53-year-old Mrs Nitaya lying in a pool of blood at the foot of the house’s staircase. She had suffered multiple shotgun wounds to the right arm, chest and left side of her face. A shotgun and two spent shells were recovered at the scene. The alleged shooter, Mr Asia, 42, was arrested at the scene. He was found in an intoxicated and incoherent state. He is the younger brother of the victim’s husband. According to initial police interviews, the shooting followed a heated argument between Mr Asia and his elder brother. The dispute was reportedly sparked by Mr Asia’s anger that the victim had not prepared food for their elderly mother. During the quarrel, the brothers exchanged threats before Mr Asia returned to his nearby home, just 50 metres away, retrieved a shotgun and fired it toward his brother’s home. One of the shots struck Mrs Nitaya, who was standing on the stairs. The victim’s husband, who witnessed the incident, said he had argued with his younger brother over the care of their mother, particularly about his wife not cooking for her. He said the row escalated rapidly, resulting in the fatal attack. The suspect has confessed to the crime, police said. He is being held in custody at Khlong Lan Police Station. He faces charges of homicide and illegal possession of a firearm. Mrs Nitaya’s body has been sent for further forensic examination at Sawanpracharak Hospital in Nakhon Sawan province. 16. Picture courtesy of kaoded. A heartwarming rescue operation unfolded in a sugarcane field in Tha Muang district, Kanchanaburi, after a young dog was discovered trapped at the bottom of a deep, abandoned groundwater well. The incident occurred near Soi 1 behind Wat Krang Thong Ratburana, Moo 5 in Thung Thong subdistrict. Local villagers alerted the Khun Rattanawut Foundation after hearing desperate cries for help coming from the disused well, which was approximately five metres deep. Rescue personnel arrived swiftly and found a male dog, estimated to be about one year old, visibly frightened and weakened after being stuck for an extended period. The team assessed the situation and carefully lowered a rope with a knotted rescue loop to retrieve the animal. Within a short time, the puppy was successfully lifted to safety, much to the relief of onlookers who had gathered to watch and offer support. In a surprising twist, the villager who had reported the incident approached the rescued dog, only to realise it was his own pet, affectionately named “Chao Boon Khum” (translated as “Lucky Protector”), who had gone missing earlier. Overcome with joy, the man embraced his beloved dog, relieved to have him back safe and sound. The Khun Rattanawut Foundation used the opportunity to remind the public about the dangers posed by open or abandoned wells, especially those lacking protective covers. They urged property owners to take precautions to prevent incidents involving pets, wildlife or children. The foundation also encouraged swift reporting of similar incidents to ensure timely and safe rescues. The story of Chao Boon Khum has since resonated with locals, a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and compassion in times of need. Adapted by Asean Now from Kaoded 2025-06-24

  18. Picture courtesy of Komchadluek. An incident occurred in Chanthaburi Province, when a 78-year-old woman drowned in a pond beside her home while attempting to cut tree branches. Her disabled husband, aged 80, made a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to rescue her. The incident was reported to the Sawang Katanyu Dhammasathan Rescue Centre, which dispatched volunteers and alerted officers from Mueang Chanthaburi Police Station to the scene in Soi Khlong Takhe 5, Khlong Narai Subdistrict. At the location, a single-storey concrete house surrounded by a mangosteen orchard, emergency responders found the lifeless body of Mrs Boonsin, 78, already pulled to the edge of the pond by relatives. After initial documentation by the police, her body was brought under the house’s eaves where family members gently cleaned off weeds and debris before it was handed over to rescue workers for transfer to Phra Pokklao Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Witnesses at the scene said that Mrs Boonsin, who had limited mobility but remained determined to assist in household chores, had told her husband she was going to cut some branches near the house. The pond lay adjacent to the area she was working in. Her husband, Mr Noi, 80, who is hearing-impaired and unable to walk, noticed her fall and tried to reach her by dragging himself across the ground. He managed to enter the pond and push her body toward the bank, but lacked the strength to lift her out. He called for help as best he could. Fortunately, the couple’s grandson had just returned from the orchard and heard the grandfather’s cries. He rushed to assist with a ladder but by the time he reached the scene, it was too late to save his grandmother. “If our grandson hadn’t come back at that moment, it might have been both of them dead in the water,” one family member said. Police confirmed there were no signs of foul play and have ruled the death an accident. Adapted by Asean Now from Khomchadluek 2025-06-24

  20. Picture courtesy of Naewna Officers from The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) have arrested the ringleader of a notorious online loan scam syndicate who had been on the run and living deep in the mountainous Akha tribal region of Lampang province, an area known for sheltering drug trafficking networks. The arrest was led by officers from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), under the direction of Pol Lt Gen Jiraphop Bhuridej, Commander of the CIB, and supported by high-ranking officers including Pol Maj Gen Sophon Sarapat and Pol Maj Gen Montree Thetkhan. The suspect, 44-year-old Mr Sanya, was apprehended in front of a house in Ban Rong subdistrict, Ngao district. Mr Sanya was wanted under Criminal Court Warrant No. 6373/2567 (issued 25 December 2024) on charges of public fraud by impersonation, inputting false data into a computer system with the intention to deceive or cause damage, and conspiracy to launder money. Investigators identified him as a key figure in the “Fast Loan” scam, which defrauded victims of several million baht. According to police, the scam operated via the LINE messaging app under the name “Fast Loan,” where scammers would message potential victims with offers of low-interest loans. Victims were tricked into paying multiple “guarantee fees” but never received any loans. When contact was cut off, many victims filed complaints. Investigators tracked the flow of illicit funds through a network of mule accounts and digital wallets used to conceal the money trail and avoid detection. Mr Sanya was identified as part of a four-person core group behind the scheme, all of whom are subjects of arrest warrants. Further investigations revealed that Mr Sanya had fled to a remote Akha community, which also serves as a hideout for drug traffickers. Officers from the CSD, in cooperation with local police in Ngao and district administrative officials, travelled to the mountainous area and located the suspect at a residence in the village of Mae Kham La. Police found Mr Sanya on the second floor of a house and called for him to come down. After confirming his identity, they presented the warrant and arrested him. He later confessed to all charges. Initial questioning revealed that Mr Sanya had previously worked as a furniture deliveryman in Chiang Mai in 2021. At the time, he was living with his sister, Ms Pornsiri and her former partner, Mr Rangsi. Mr Rangsi allegedly persuaded Mr Sanya to open three bank accounts, with Kasikornbank, Siam Commercial Bank and Bangkok Bank, to be used in the scam. In return, Mr Rangsi frequently provided food and alcohol. After the arrest, Mr Sanya was taken to Ngao Provincial Police Station for documentation and legal processing, and authorities notified the public prosecutor in accordance with the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act 2022. He has since been transferred to the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok for further legal action. Police continue to pursue the remaining members of the scam network and have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on cybercrime and financial fraud rings. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has announced on 23 June, its intention to pursue legal action against an individual suspected of shooting a wild elephant known as Plai Biang Lek(also nicknamed Nong Ngong Thong) in Khao Yai National Park. According to Mr. Atthapol Charoenchansa, Director-General of the department, the incident occurred on 19 June at around 17:00 near Village 5, Ban Nong Makrut, in Nong Nam Daeng Subdistrict, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima. A local volunteer group working to deter wild elephants reported the event to park authorities. The group encountered the well-known wild elephant foraging near private farmland. The landowner allegedly fired five shotgun rounds, both into the air and at the ground, in an attempt to scare the animal away. The volunteers present documented the incident with photographs and collected used shotgun shells as evidence. The following day, members of the volunteer team observed two suspicious wounds near the elephant’s hindquarters. These injuries raised concerns that Plai Biang Lek may have been struck by gunfire. Park officials and veterinary staff are currently investigating the cause of the wounds and expect to confirm whether they are indeed gunshot-related within the day. Park authorities are in the process of compiling witness statements and physical evidence in preparation for legal proceedings. A source close to the investigation confirmed that the suspect has been identified in photographs holding a shotgun. The individual is reportedly a relative of a local Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) chairman. Officials have in their possession both photographic and ballistic evidence linking the suspect to the shooting. The Department has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting wildlife and ensuring justice in accordance with environmental protection laws. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-24
