  1. Pictures from responders. An incident in the early hours of the morning of 17 February, claimed the life of a driver when a car crashed into the back of a 10-wheel lorry, registered in Ubon Ratchathani, carrying paper, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. The collision occurred at approximately 04:40 on the bypass road leading from Chor Hor district, at the intersection junction for Nakhon Ratchasima and Saraburi. The Mercedes had approached from behind and slammed into the lorru at high speed. Upon impact, the car was engulfed in fire, trapping the driver inside. Emergency services, including firefighters and rescue personnel, rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze and retrieve the victim. However, the fire had already consumed most of the vehicle by the time responders arrived, making rescue efforts impossible. The driver, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was dead at the scene, with the badly charred body found still in the remains of the driving seat. Police and forensic teams are investigating the cause of the crash, examining whether factors such as driver fatigue, or poor visibility may have played a role. The ICE powered Mercedes-Benz, had no gas conversion, but details of the exact model and registration, was not available, due to the damage. The lorry driver, who was unharmed, was taken in for questioning to provide further details about the moments leading up to the collision. Authorities are urging motorists to drive with caution, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is low and fatigue-related crashes are more common. -- 2025-02-17

  3. Pictures from responders. A rescue operation took place overnight, at Map Ta Phut Pier after a pick-up truck plunged into the sea at 23.30 on 16 February. The driver is believed to have been inside the vehicle when it sank, and emergency teams have worked all night, to locate both the missing person and the submerged truck. The incident occurred near a cooling water drainage canal behind the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate. Witnesses reported seeing a Nissan pick-up truck speeding before crashing into a lamppost and breaking through a metal guardrail, eventually plummeting into the water. When rescue teams arrived at the scene, they discovered vehicle debris, including a number plate and a section of the front grille, scattered along the shoreline. Skid marks and damage to the concrete embankment suggested a high-impact collision before the vehicle entered the water. Initial search efforts were hampered by strong currents and rough sea conditions, making it difficult for divers. Authorities believe the truck may have been swept towards a sluice gate before drifting into the open sea. Seven rescue boats and jet skis have been deployed, along with sonar equipment, in an attempt to pinpoint the vehicle’s location. As of the morning of 17 February, rescue teams continue to search the area, with officials urging local fishermen and boat operators to report any sightings that could aid in the recovery operation. The search for the missing driver remains a top priority, with authorities also committed to recovering the vehicle and determining the full circumstances of the incident. -- 2025-02-17

A crash occurred on the Burapha Withi Expressway at 12:05, on 16th February, when a black Toyota van crashed into a toll booth, resulting in the death of a Japanese businessman and leaving the driver critically injured. The incident took place at the Bang Phli 1 toll plaza on the inbound side towards Bangkok, at kilometre 11 in Samut Prakan province. Authorities believe the driver, identified as 38-year-old Phairoj, may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The van struck a concrete support pillar of the toll booth with great force, severely damaging the vehicle. Emergency responders were quick to the scene, using cutting equipment to extricate the driver, who was trapped in the wreckage. Phairoj was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Inside the van, emergency workers found the body of 57-year-old Soichi, a Japanese businessman and president of a steel manufacturing company based in Chonburi. He was seated in the front passenger seat and was pronounced dead at the scene. Security camera footage of the crash revealed that the van was travelling at high speed, with no signs of braking or slowing down before impact. 7. Picture from responders. A manhunt has ended in the swift arrest of a 28-year-old suspect who brutally bludgeoned his friend to death with a hammer in front of the victim’s two young children in Ayutthaya. The shocking attack, which occurred in the early hours of 16th February, left the victim, 42-year-old Phichat Phayayot, dead at the scene. The suspect, identified as Chalermwong, known as ‘Kong’, was apprehended later that day at a house in Sena district, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Police took him into custody for questioning at Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Police Station. He faces charges of murder and theft, having allegedly stolen two mobile phones from the victim’s home after the attack. The horrific incident took place at approximately 03:00. According to Phichat’s 10-year-old daughter, the suspect broke into their home, wielded a hammer, and struck her father twice on the head as she and her eight-year-old brother watched in terror. Despite being threatened to remain silent, the girl bravely called her aunt, Lalita Phayayot, for help. Upon arriving, Lalita found the children in shock and their father lying in a pool of blood. Investigators revealed that Phichat and the suspect had been long-time acquaintances. The night before the attack, they had an argument, though no further confrontation was reported until the assault. Relatives of both men have spoken about their strained relationship, with the suspect’s sister suggesting that the dispute stemmed from allegations of theft. Police sources indicate that Chalermwong had accused Phichat of stealing wrought iron from his home, leading to escalating tensions. The suspect’s sister stated that he had previously expressed violent thoughts but had never acted on them. The victim’s brother, meanwhile, expressed relief at the suspect’s quick arrest, fearing that had he remained at large, the children’s safety would have been at risk. Phichat’s children, now orphaned as their mother had left the family years ago, will be cared for by relatives. The victim’s body has been sent for forensic examination in Pathum Thani. -- 2025-02-17

University Professor’s Home Catches Fire in Bangkok: 1 Dead, Suspected E-Bike Battery Fire A fire broke out at the home of a university professor in Bangkok in the early hours of 16 February, with initial reports suggesting an electric bicycle battery as the cause Full story:https://aseannow.com/topic/1351983-university-professor’s-home-catches-fire-in-bangkok-1-dead-suspected-e-bike-battery-fire/
  9. Pictures from responders. A fire broke out at the home of a university professor in Bangkok in the early hours of 16 February, with initial reports suggesting an electric bicycle battery as the cause. At approximately 02:20, Pol. Lt. Apiwat Phuak-insaeng, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Thung Khru Police Station, received a report of a house fire in a residential estate on Soi Pracha Uthit 72, Thung Khru district. Emergency responders, including firefighters, rescue volunteers, and civil defence personnel from Thung Khru and Rat Burana, were quickly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found a three-storey townhouse engulfed in flames, with heavy smoke billowing from the property at number 68/164. The fire rapidly spread to the second and third floors. Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before bringing it under control, with parts of the house suffering severe damage. During their inspection, officials discovered the body of a 69-year-old woman, later identified as Mrs. Kueaporn Taweeprapathomkul, in a third-floor room that served as both an office and a bedroom. She was found lying on her back, with visible soot marks on her body. Officers from the Forensic Police Division, medical examiners from Siriraj Hospital, and investigators examined the scene. Her husband, Mr. Suchart Taweeprapathomkul, 71, a professor at Chulalongkorn University and the homeowner, suffered smoke inhalation but declined hospitalisation after receiving first aid. Mr. Suchart stated that he suspected the fire was triggered by an electric bicycle battery. He clarified that the bike had not been charging at the time but was parked within the car port area, next to other stored items. He recalled waking up to use the bathroom when he heard an explosion followed by a loud crash. Initially thinking it was a domestic dispute, he went to investigate and saw flames rapidly spreading into the house. He attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher, but it was insufficient to control the blaze. Acting quickly, he soaked a shirt in water and covered his face to avoid severe burns. “If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have made it out alive,” he said. Only Mr. Suchart and his wife were in the house, as their children had already moved out to start their own families . Picture showing the remains of the E-bike, the suspected cause. Forensic officers have collected the remains of the electric bicycle’s battery and other debris for further analysis. Meanwhile, the deceased’s body has been sent to Siriraj Hospital’s forensic department for an autopsy. Officials will continue investigating the incident to confirm the exact cause of the fire. -- 2025-02-17

  13. Picture from responders. A police officer in Trat province was injured after losing control of his official pickup truck and crashing into a streetlight on the evening of 16th February. However, what was initially seen as just a crash, soon took a dramatic turn when authorities discovered a large quantity of smuggled cigarettes inside the vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 18:30 on Sukhumvit Road, near Wat Tha Sen in Laem Klat subdistrict, Mueang Trat district. Officers from Ban Tha Luean Police Station and rescue personnel responded to the scene, where they found a severely damaged police pickup truck belonging to Provincial Police Region 2. The driver, a 37-year-old non-commissioned police officer, suffered minor injuries, including abrasions and back pain. Rescue teams provided first aid before transporting him to Trat Hospital for further medical attention. A closer inspection of the scene revealed that the vehicle had collided with a streetlight, causing it to collapse across onto the central reservation. More startling, however, was the discovery of over 300 cartons of smuggled foreign cigarettes, packed in black plastic bags and plastic containers, both inside the vehicle and in the truck bed. When questioned about the incident, Pol. Col. Montri Jina, superintendent of Ban Tha Luean Police Station, confirmed that the vehicle and the injured officer were indeed from the police force. He stated that investigators were awaiting the officer’s recovery to determine the origin of the contraband. “The cigarettes found in the vehicle are foreign brands without excise stamps. We need to conduct a full investigation to establish how they ended up in a police vehicle. If any wrongdoing is uncovered, legal action will be taken accordingly,” Pol. Col. Montri stated. Authorities have seized the smuggled cigarettes for further examination while awaiting the officer’s statement. The case has raised serious concerns, and police officials have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted. -- 2025-02-17

Officers, along with rescue teams from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation and medical staff from Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital, arrived at the scene. Authorities have gathered witness statements and evidence at the scene. The deceased’s body has been sent for further examination at Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital. Police are now working to contact her family to proceed with legal formalities. -- 2025-02-17

Picture from Wiang Kosai National Park Officials from the Wiang Kosai National Park rescue team have successfully rescued a male leopard cat found collapsed at the side of the road, believed to have fled from a nearby wildfire. The incident occurred during a routine patrol by park rangers on 16th February, along the boundary between the national park and a buffer forest area in the Samai Seree village, Sobprab District, Lampang Province. The team discovered the exhausted young leopard cat cub lying near the road leading to the Lam Huai Samai Luang forest, just outside the park’s protected area. Given the signs of widespread wildfire in the surrounding forest, officials believe the animal had fled the flames but became too weak to continue. The rescue team immediately provided water and food to the animal and transported it to the Wiang Kosai National Park office in Wang Chin District, Phrae Province, for further care and observation. The leopard cat cub will eventually be handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Office of the 13th Conservation Area Administration (Phrae) for proper rehabilitation and release back into the wild. Leopard cats are a protected species under the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act, classified as a mammal under item 147. 23. Pictures captured from CCTV of suspect and victim. Police have issued an arrest warrant for a Chinese man suspected of causing the death of a 22-year-old Thai woman, identified as Ms. Airda, after she was found dead in a hotel room in the Bang Kapi area of Bangkok. The incident, which occurred on 10th February, has raised concerns over the safety of individuals in the entertainment industry, with police pledging to investigate thoroughly and hold any officers found negligent accountable. According to police reports, on the evening of 9th February, the Chinese man, identified only as Mr. Duoying, checked into the hotel. Ms. Airda arrived later after 02:00, on 10th February, and was later discovered dead in the room, without visible signs of struggle or injury. Surveillance footage revealed that Mr. Duoying left the hotel at 06:16 and did not return, raising further suspicions. Hotel staff reported the discovery of the body later that morning. The police investigation has already questioned several individuals, including the modelling agent who arranged the job for Ms. Airda, who reportedly had agreed to provide entertainment services involving illicit substances. Preliminary reports suggest that Ms. Airda may have been unknowingly coerced into using drugs, which led to her fatal overdose. Police Chief Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom has emphasized the urgency of the investigation, instructing officers to expedite the case and ensure justice for the deceased’s family. He has also warned that any police officers found to be negligent or complicit in covering up the crime will face disciplinary and criminal action. The arrest warrant for Mr. Duoying was issued on 16th February, with the charge of manslaughter due to reckless conduct leading to death. Police are actively seeking his whereabouts, with immigration authorities alerted to prevent his escape from the country. Meanwhile, the family of Ms. Airda has expressed frustration and heartbreak, believing that she had been misled into taking the job by her modelling agent, who allegedly has ties to law enforcement. The victim’s sister, Ms. Anarat, has revealed that the family only learned of the nature of her work after her death, and they have expressed concerns over potential corruption within the police force. During a meeting with officers at Chok Chai Police Station, Ms. Anarat was reportedly presented with two options for proceeding with the case: accepting a financial settlement of 500,000 Baht or pursuing the matter in court. The family has expressed their determination to seek justice, despite being warned that the case may be difficult to win. “We want the truth,” Ms. Anarat stated. “Our priority is justice for my sister, and we will not stop until we get it.” The police investigation continues, with authorities promising full cooperation with the family and all efforts to bring the responsible parties to justice. -- 2025-02-17
