Pictures from responders. A fire broke out at a cannabis cultivation facility in Jomtien on the night of 13 February, sending clouds of smoke through a nearby residential area. The incident left some locals feeling dizzy, while some foreign tourists reportedly found the situation amusing. At 22:05, the Land Public Disaster Relief Radio Centre received reports of a fire at a four-storey commercial building on Soi Welcome Jomtien, Bang Lamung. Emergency responders, including firefighters and Pattaya City police, were dispatched to the scene. The fire was concentrated on the second floor of the building, which was used as a cannabis cultivation room by Little Christiania Co., Ltd. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, but the smoke made their efforts challenging. Due to the nature of the burning plants, the fire produced a pungent smoke that spread throughout the neighbourhood. It took over 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, though the lingering scent of burnt cannabis remained in the air long after the flames were extinguished. Many responding officers were seen covering their noses to avoid inhaling the fumes, after suffering some mild effects. Ms. Kanjana Fangsantia, 40, the facility’s manager, confirmed that the company had received official permission to cultivate cannabis for medicinal purposes. She speculated that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in the lighting system used for plant growth. The estimated damage is around 200,000 baht. Following the fire, residents and tourists in the area reported various effects from inhaling the smoke. Some locals complained of dizziness and headaches, while others were left with red, glassy eyes. Meanwhile a number of foreign tourists were seen laughing and giving a thumbs-up as they enjoyed the unexpected turn of events. -- 2025-02-14

Picture from responders. A father was left devastated after discovering the lifeless bodies of his 12-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter in a pond, following a frantic overnight search after they mysteriously disappeared. The tragedy unfolded in Sai Noi district, Nonthaburi province, when police received reports of two children drowning near a pond adjacent to a road in Nong Phra Ngai subdistrict. Authorities, including forensic specialists and emergency responders, rushed to the scene at around 09:00 on 13 February. Upon arrival, police found two pairs of children’s shoes, one green and one black, placed near the edge of the pond, which measured 10 by 15 metres and was approximately 3 metres deep. The father, Narong 40, a construction worker, broke down in tears as he recounted how his son and daughter had been missing since the previous evening. The children, who usually lived with their grandmother, failed to return home on 12 February, prompting him to search for them all night. At dawn, a local resident alerted him to the discovery of children’s shoes by the pond. Rushing to the scene, Narong dove into the water and found his daughter’s body submerged. Unable to continue searching due to the murky depths, he called emergency services for help. A specialist diving unit from a local rescue foundation was deployed, and within 10 minutes, they recovered the body of his 12-year-old son, who had autism. Narong, who had been raising his children alone after separating from their mother years ago, stated that neither child knew how to swim. Authorities conducted an initial examination of the scene and documented evidence. The bodies of both children have been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science to determine the exact cause of death. -- 2025-02-14

Picture from responders. A wild elephant caused chaos at a restaurant in Khao Yai, where it smashed into the kitchen of a local eatery before being safely guided back into the forest by officials. The incident occurred during the early hours of February 13, in the Moo Si sub-district, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, near the popular Thanarat Road. According to reports from local authorities, the elephant, which appeared to be a smaller male, wandered into the kitchen of the “Ayutthaya” restaurant, located near the busy community market. The animal was drawn to the food in the kitchen, consuming rice, seasonings, dried food, and even pork. Donai Sukuntachat, a local volunteer, rushed to the scene after being alerted. He quickly recognised the elephant as it had been frequenting the area, resting behind the restaurant earlier in the day. He worked with other volunteers to safely guide the elephant out of the kitchen by using lights, loud noises, and tapping sticks to encourage the animal to retreat. Thankfully, the elephant gradually backed off, crossing the road to the opposite side, away from the restaurant. A local café owner also helped by using a flashlight to assist the efforts. The situation was resolved without injury, with both the volunteers and the elephant safely retreating to the forest, preventing any further property damage. This incident highlights the ongoing interaction between wildlife and human settlements in areas close to national parks, where elephants are often found wandering into towns and villages in search of food. -- 2025-02-14

Rescue workers from the Sawang Rojanatham Sathan Foundation were dispatched to the scene. The deceased, identified as Natthapong Binbueraheng, was discovered wearing only brown shorts. His body was found floating in an upright position, arms wrapped around a bridge pillar. Picture of arrest. A jealous older man caused chaos at a barbecue restaurant in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai, on the evening of 12 February, when he fired a gun inside the premises, sending customers fleeing in terror. The incident occurred at a restaurant in Wiang Phang Kham subdistrict, where a man, reportedly intoxicated, became enraged upon seeing customers chatting with his girlfriend, a waitress at the establishment. Witnesses stated that the man, later identified as 65-year-old Mr. Sukam, had been drinking alone at the restaurant since 17:00, consuming white liquor while keeping a close eye on his 35-year-old partner, Ms. Fong, as she served customers. Tensions escalated when he observed male patrons engaging in light-hearted banter with Ms. Fong. Enraged, he began shouting obscenities and slamming his table before producing a firearm and firing a shot into the air. The bullet reportedly struck the ceiling before ricocheting towards the second floor, where it narrowly missed a group of diners. One of them, a 29-year-old woman named Ms. Rattanaporn, later reported feeling a burning sensation on her left arm before discovering a bullet hole beneath her seat. Restaurant owner Ms. Phenapha described the ensuing panic, as patrons fled in fear. According to her, Mr. Sukam also physically assaulted Ms. Fong before storming out of the restaurant, warning that he would return to cause further trouble if she did not leave with him. Police from Mae Sai Police Station responded swiftly, launching a manhunt that led them to Mr. Sukam’s home in Ban Doi Ngam, approximately one kilometre from the restaurant. Officers found him in an intoxicated state, speaking incoherently. A search of the premises uncovered a 9mm handgun, along with the Mitsubishi car used in his getaway. Ms. Fong later told investigators that Mr. Sukam had been at the restaurant for hours, appearing displeased that she was too busy with customers to attend to him. His jealousy and anger ultimately culminated in the violent outburst. Authorities arrested Mr. Sukam and seized his firearm, with further legal proceedings now underway. -- 2025-02-14

Picture courtesy of RTN. The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) officially launched its 2025 annual training exercises on 13 February under the guiding principle of “Train as You Fight.” Admiral Jirapon Wongwit, the Commander-in-Chief of the RTN, presided over the opening ceremony at Laem Thian Pier, Sattahip Naval Base, Chonburi, alongside senior naval officers and participating personnel. Following the ceremony, Admiral Jirapon observed demonstrations of naval and aerial operations and inspected the array of weaponry and equipment that will be used during this year’s exercises. The annual training is the navy’s most critical exercise, designed to simulate real combat scenarios, progressing from peacetime conditions to crisis situations and ultimately full-scale national defence operations. The training is structured to enhance strategic thinking, doctrinal familiarity, and operational capabilities across all naval units. To achieve this, the navy has integrated specific training objectives into command post exercises (CPX) and field training exercises (FTX) to align with its overarching defence strategy. This year’s training will focus on national defence operations within the Second Naval Area Command. Key components include command post drills and intensive field and sea-based exercises. One of the highlights is the Operation 72 Long-Range Task Force Drill, featuring an amphibious transport group composed of HTMS Chang, HTMS Angthong, HTMS Surin, and HTMS Man Nai. These vessels will be escorted by a protection fleet, including HTMS Naresuan, HTMS Chao Phraya, and HTMS Kraburi, with additional air and marine combat units providing support. Other significant training operations include: • Surface-to-air missile launches from HTMS Chakri Naruebet using Mistral missiles. • Joint operations between the navy and air force. • Amphibious warfare drills to enhance coastal defence capabilities. • Counter-terrorism exercises focusing on offshore gas platforms. • Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions. • Search and rescue (SAR) operations at sea. • Oil and chemical spill response drills to mitigate maritime environmental hazards. • Marine Corps integrated battalion-level training exercises, incorporating live-fire drills (CALFEX). • Air defence and coastal defence training exercises. Additionally, the RTN has invited personnel from the Royal Thai Army, Royal Thai Air Force, and the National Maritime Security Command Centre to participate, reinforcing inter-service cooperation and joint operational readiness. This annual training exercise is a cornerstone of Thailand’s naval preparedness, ensuring the RTN remains capable of safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests in an ever-evolving security landscape. -- 2025-02-14
