  1. A friend needs to forward mail from overseas to Chiang Mai. Are there post office boxes anywhere close to Chaing Mai university?

I've got a box at CMU PO inside the campus, near Siam Commercial Bank and Omsin Bank. Less than 200 baht/year.

    CMMCB

    Greetings to all who replied,

There are not currently any PO boxes available at CMU, however my friends will be able to forward their mail to the CMU post office. They will have to pay one baht per pick-up...that's very cheap. So once again problem solved by Thai Visa members. Thanks.

  2. If you walk from Thapae Gate and past AUA, you will see soi 5 on your right hand side, turn there and walk about 10 meters into the soi to the restaurant of the Rendevous Guest House. In my opinion, the 75 baht spaggetti bolganaise is excellent and you get a few pieces of pretty good toasted bread and grated cheese with it. The portion might be a little bit smaller than other places that charge 120-150 for spaggetti that is not as good, but I think that it is a good deal.

Let me warn you, some other foods there are great and others are not up to much, so I usually stick to spaggetti. :o

Thanks...it's always good to know where to get a good meal for a decent price..

  3. I was innocently walking by the original Mike's Burgers on Kotchasan road last night when I spotted a nice looking, new Mexican restaurant called Diablos Burritos. I was already full from the 75 baht spaggetti place, so I did not try it.

By the way, The Barby's Roast Beef sandwich place right across the street, looks to open soon. :o

    Ulysses,

Can you tell us where the 75 baht spaggetti place is? and is it any good?

  4. to stay:

Pana Huts in Mae Hong Son

    The Countryside in Pai

    They both have web sites

    To do:

Drive from Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang, stay the night at a guesthouse on the river, then drive up to Mae Hong son, then after staying in Mae hong son drive to Pai... the views are very nice. There's also the fish caves on the way, but they are very touristy.

Or, from Pai take 2 day white water rafting trip to Mae hong son with an overnight camp out on the way. Be prepared to be dumped in the river by the crazy Lisu guides(lots of fun)

  5. I applied for the VN visa at visa-vietnam.org. They replied back very fast, it cost $20 which they want you to pay using Xoom.com, which I never used before. Then you have to pay $25.00 more when you arrive.

I may try with an agent in CM or just go down to BKK..unless I hear from someone who has done this before on line without any problems I may skip doing it on line.

I used the .org site you listed and it took maybe 5 minutes.

Had my permission to enter letter the next morning and did the visa on arrival when I landed in HCMC.

    Easy as pie.

    SImple simple.

Enjoy your stay, I loved it.

    Good info for next time..thanks

  6. there is a travel agent,i think connected to namkong gh(if i remember the name right),if you go north from daret house(thai pae gate) past the bookstore ,the next shop or so on the same side of the road.when i needed it i found out that many of the other agents give it to them and they take it to the viets'ambassy in bkk and return it with the visa and thus had the best price in town.give it a try ,it's easy enough to go there and talk to them.

Yes, I found the place and dropped off my Passport today, and will get it back on the 9th. 1800 baht for a 1 month single entry. I am not leaving till the 22nd so I have plenty of time.

  9. Whilst there are no Visas on Arrival for Vietnam, there are pre-arranged visas where the visa will be waiting for you on arrival. Just Google it.

I did not know that. Thanks, I just applied online. Quick and easy.

  10. I'm Going to Vietnam and need a visa. I know I can go down to BKK and apply at the VN Embassy but I want to avoid doing that.

Is there an agent in Chiang Mai where I can get this done to avoid going to BKK? Any details are appreciated, such as the price and how long it takes.

    thanks

  11. My first posting here. I have been in Chiang Mai for some years but have been peacefully settled with my long term bf, so I have not kept up with whats going on with all the bars and gay scene. the pinned listings seem very outdated. Any comments or updates or information to catch me up? Many Thanks.

Click on the web site below, then click on See our Guide. It has a lot of new information on the Chiang Mai Gay scene

  12. BBill, thanks as always. My neighbor, down the klong from the wild, pink water wings, tells me it is several hundred meters north of the Santitam roundabout, then take a left at the soi across from the Tesco-Lotus Express. Then it should be inside a huge, red, brick, multistory apt. complex. Rumour has it the monthly membership fee is 400 baht, which is great for an every-day user like me.

What is the fee for 700-year stadium fee? Do they have a 700-year membership? It is a bit further down the long klong, though. Meanwhile, I still pay 200 baht per year and sip baht every day at Pong Pote. How much per day at Amari Rincome?

Hey PB your neighbor is correct on the location of the Santitham pool, but I'm not sure on the price, I've been meaning to get over there since it is so close to me. I'll try and get the rates and get back to you.

  13. Does anybody know where a new pool is, somewhere near Santitam traffic circle and the YMCA? My regular pool is on its last legs, and my Japanese friend tells me she has found a new pool in that area. But she could not tell me quite where it is.

The new pool is in the middle of Santitham Plaza near the new brick apartment buildings

  14. I went through this search a while ago too, and the best ones I found where at the government Post Office on the CMU campus. They are cardboard and you won't be able to break them over your knee. Selection varies greatly from visit to visit though.

Thanks T dog..Do you remember how much they cost at CMU?

  15. The pizza at the Duke's has gotten better and better over the last two years and it is great almost every time I order it now. What do you think? Can another pizza in town stand up to the Duke's thin crust? :o

Anyone ever try the Pizza at La Lanterna Di Genova on Ratchadamnoen Rd?

Don't think that's on the survey list and was always curious but never tried it.

  16. just did that trip last month....fly Nok to Udon Thani, then take a mini van from airport to border 150 baht. then a taxi from the border to vietienne about 150-200 baht

or as millwall fan says: from the airport get to the bus station and for about 80 baht get a bus which will take you all the way into vientienne...actually that's what I did coming back....caught the bus from vientienne all the way to Udonthani..the bus waits for everyone as they go through the border process..very easy trip

  17. Thanks guys... was sort of thinking of the killing two birds route by going to one with a pool as well.

killing... hmmm no pun intended BungalowBill :o

The Duangtuan hotel has a good gym and a pool on the 4th floor

  18. First post in the local forum, greetings from a new resident ...

Anyone go to a gym in CM? Recommendations welcome ...

Welcome, I can reccomend Fitness Thailand, They have a huge gym, huge locker room, lots of tread mills, cross trainers, tons of weight machines and free weights. They offer free yoga, and free bike spinning classes, ...I paid 7,000 baht for one year. If you go between 0900-1600 you will never have to wait for a machine. even peak times there are still plenty of machines to go around.

It's located on the 7th floor of icon square, which is not far from the traffic light on the north east corner of the moat(outside the moat heading into town)

There are lots of other good gyms in town and some are brand new and might not come up on a search as someone suggested. I'm sure some of the other members will share info on their favorite gym...good luck

  19. The Ottawa Citizen reported at 6:15 A.M. Thai time that an Ontario professor is apparently OK after having a bollet removed from his abdomen.

Investigating officer Lt. Wirachon Buntawee said police believe the bullet may have come from a nearby building and could have been discharged by somebody trying to shoot birds on a nearby telephone wire.

I can believe that.....In my building someone is always shooting at the pigeons from their window or terrace.
