China will always take something strategic back in return for any foreign investment ie control of a port or long standing permission to host a military base.. It may look good in the press that China is helping in foreign aid or improving the welfare of poor nations but there is always a "payback" !

What should I look for when buying private insurance?
GmailJen replied to global expat's topic in Insurance in Thailand
Look at the area of coverage ! If you are International Traveller then ok an International Policy is a good idea BUT if you only stay in Thailand or lets say just go to the European Union occasionally , then it pays to look for a "Thailand only policy" as the premiums for International Policies increase substantially for cover in USA/Europe etc and for things you might never need or are not applicable ( ie repatriation of body etc ) Then, if you go to Europe you can just take a Schengen insurance policy for the period there . As always , look for a reputable insurer underwritten by a reputable body and read the small print . -
Engine oil not leaking but decreasing
GmailJen replied to villageidiotY2K's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I would first check the colour of the engine oil - if any signs of being milky likely to be head gasket . If you have an auto gearbox like the Toyota Vigo ( big box) then could be seal leak from engine to gearbox ( I had this issue - solution - gearbox out and renew seal ) -
Some tax filing issues
GmailJen replied to Barney13's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Absolutely correct . ALL foreigners who spend 180 days or more in Thailand "MUST" obtain a TIN number AND file a tax return . All one has to do is disclose ALL monenies brought into Thailand during the tax year - preferably showing details ie pension with supporting evidence . It will be up to the tax office to decide if any taxes due on " assessible " income/monies received ! Very simple really . -
Thailand Introduces Online TM6 as Tourism Fee Faces Delays
GmailJen replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Why are we back to TM6 - thought this has been consigned to the bin ! Surely with the implementation of the ETIAS system with all travellers requiring to complete this before even leaving the place of departure , the authorities have all the necessary information ? More red tape ! -
Furniture/Personal Possessions/Container From UK
GmailJen replied to MangoKorat's topic in General Topics
Could try 7 Seas , they do professional moves overseas. Not worth bringing in Electronic / Electricals as they attract big taxes . Make sure you get door to door service . -
I am also looking for a "Thai only " policy tailored to my specific needs that only includes what I require ( ie hospital stays ) I recently exited Thailand to kill off the OA visa naw have a Non O retirement Most companies offer International Policies which cover medical expenses abroad and repatriation etc etc which is ALL not required and only bumps up premiums . So , I looking for Thai Company that can build a Policy to my specific needs . ( I am 73, in good health and wish to obtain a policy before I reach 75 !! Replies appreciated

I had a problem with tree stumps that had not been properly removed under a house I bought and were sprouting up around the foundations.. I used TORDON as the only recommended way to remove these and penetrate the offending roots/ stump . Essential to follow the instructions . So far seems to have worked !!! I obtained Tordon from either Laxada or Shopee ( forget which )

Insurance is the key ! Nothing will change whilst Insurance remains in Government hands and DLT hands out Insurance like Candy .

The article states :- "Initial reports indicate that the yacht had just returned from dropping off passengers when its engine malfunctioned, leading to the fire. The boat’s captain, believed to be a foreign national, was injured in the incident and has since been transported to Mission Hospital for treatment." If the yacht is conducting any business in Thailand it would have to be Thai registered and have a Thai Captain . A foreign Captain is not allowed .

I just applied for my Non "O" after going out and killing off the O- A visa and no background check - so must assume that as as I had already done the background check for the O-A , then it was not applicable to my O application. Therefore if one has already had an existing visa and background check done previously , then it is NOT required again .

Sinking scandal: Pattaya’s new footpaths crumbling already
GmailJen replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
That's not all ! Ones should look at the footpaths on the recently widened main Sukhumvit road from Pattaya to Sattahip !! I watched them laying the paving over just loose fill and soil ! Sure they got it done fast but look at it now ! First sign of rain washed way the underfill and now with crooked uneven paving plus the weeds - the whole lot needs doing again ! What a waste of money ! Are there no building inspectors or are they all recipients of brown envelopes ? Hate to think what the road will be like a few years down the line ! -
Frozen in time: British expats losing out on pensions in Thailand
GmailJen replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Why should it matter where you live ? If you have paid into the system one should expect to be fairly and equally treated as all others in the "system". Let's face it - it's discriminatory ! It's not just the Pension system - my French neighbour gets his medical bills paid by the state ?? So France can pay it's expatriates medical bills but the UK can not ! Successive governments can't blame the expatriate pensioner for the state of the governments coffers , the pension system or the NHS - it's the failure of governments to manage the system sustainably . -
Thailand Embraces Larger Super Yachts to Boost Marine Tourism
GmailJen replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Thoroughly agree. As a professional Mariner with a 45 yacht in Lisbon and a trailer sailer here , am totally uninterested in any of the "Marinas" here as they are only interested in mega rich and superyachts , not the everyday yachtsman . Prices in these Marinas are out of this world - one reason for my trailer sailor which can be kept at home where I do all my maintenance myself !! Very little here to visit that is " off the beaten track" -
Thai police shut down 21 villas on Koh Samui, foreigners evicted
GmailJen replied to snoop1130's topic in Koh Samui News
It pays to do your "due diligence" property checks in Thailand ! -
Come mid September it will be the 3 month time expiry when the proposed new Same Sex Marriage legislation is due to be posted in the Royal Gazette as being implemented into law . There has not been anything promulgated regarded the status of this ??? Can anyone / body advise what is the current situation and expected date of implementation ? ( Granted the political issues may have impeded such )

What was your job (profession) when you moved to Thailand
GmailJen replied to still kicking's topic in General Topics
I was ship's Captain before retiring to Thailand . Trained at HMS Conway and started at sea with Thos & Jas Harrison of Liverpool - then one of leading/progressive companies bringing huge overseas benefits to UK - Copper bars from Rhodesia via Beira, Demerara sugar, spices, rum from West Indies , cotton ,tabacco and Caterplllar machinery from US. At that time it was a joy to enjoy long port stays in places like Trinidad, Venezuela , Jamaica and all the Carribean Islands Then worked as 3rd Mate for subsidiary of PO shipping UK goods to Mediterranean and bringing back fruit from Israel and Potatoes etc from Cyprus . I was in Famagusta when Turkey invaded Cyprus and also in Ashdod during Yom Kippur war ! Then managed to obtained a job as what was initially supposed to be 2nd Mate with a Canadian Tanker Company but on arrival suddenly promoted to Chief Officer at 23 !! I had to learn the tanker trade very quickly ! From transporting heavy oil around the east coast of Canada ( Paper Mills etc) I was then transferred to Chief mate on a Canadian flag Ice breaker class tanker 35,000 tons) trading up the East Coast in winter including the Saint Lawrence up to Quebec and New Foundland., I had a lovely house overlooking the Saint Jon River with its own wharf . From -40 C I went to over +40C to work in the United Arab Emirates as Pilot/ SBM mooring Master / Marine Surveyor and then as Petrochemical Quantification and Qualification surveyor . This job entailed travelling offshore even during the iran/Iraq war to places like Bandar Abbas !! Also worked in Dubai Drydocks supervising the tank cleaning of large tankers entering the Drydocks and the storage and reprocessing / shipping out the tank cleaning oil residues. Finally , worked as Master for major Abu Dhabi Shipping Company trading both in the Arabian Gulf and worldwide . As well as holding Master Mariner Class 1 have also been engaged in Yacht Surveys and deliveries ( Holder of RYA Ocean Yachtmaster ) and trained with Royal Navy up to rank Sub Lt .
