  1. You didn't state your budget (assuming you are picking up the tab), and you are looking for freebies from places you've never been, so I would guess you want something affordable. I recommend Dayli....look at their FB page...you can make reservations. New promos are 6 small Carlsberg for 199 or 7 large Asahi for 299. Food is reasonable and you can buy from food carts out front. It is now non-smoking.....Their English is limited, but they know words like "promotion." Just be patient. Otherwise, maybe Mad Dog on Moon Mueang, because I can't think of anyplace with more people who have had so many birthdays, like 70-80 a piece.

  2. www.ilikehd.com It's True online, 350 thb for 30 days, 306 chanels; no contract.....you can take a week off between 30s if you want to. It's "bits," when using a lower case b, as in Kbps. I attribute the occasional hiccups to the crazy kids after school, and the rainy season storms. Big storm yesterday moving pretty rapidly, and I had a few hiccups last night. I use economy 3BB, which I'm pretty happy with.

  3. My building is about 120 units, which seems to be big enough to get economies of scale; yet small enough to follow what is going on and get to know the staff on a personal basis. English is very limited, but a camera photo is about all it takes for me to make my point with the JP.

  4. my report was signed by Kotphaka, who said to call with questions at 089-5044685 I also have 053-449142 and 083-9459142.....be advised that there may be more than one location. English was well above average. The office I went to is about a block behind "Winner Inn."

Winner Inn on/near SE corner of Moat?

Yes! Thank You!...SE Corner; not NE corner as I previously stated.

  5. I do this:

I go to McCormick and order the blood tests that I want or have been asked for, inexpensive and efficient.

I see my cardiologist at RAM every six months or when he wants to see me, I take the most recent McCormick tests with me. He's very OK with that and the consulting charge is minimal, typically 300 baht. Of all the doctors I know Dr Patarapong is the one who has the highest standing in my book for professionalism combined with bedside manner and every other attribute I look for in a good doctor.

I use Rajavej for gastroenterology because they specialize in this, related tests are price competitive but I still use McCormick for blood works.

I stopped seeing endocrinologists, I realized I know more about diabetes and its treatment than most of them do.

If I need an ER I use RAM because it's efficient and inexpensive plus I trust them.

If I get a bug that I can't self medicate or if I need a flu shot, I'll see a GP, reluctantly.

Any orthopedic concerns and I see Dr Chanakarn, easily the best around town by far.

I try not to use Sriphat any more unless perhaps for neurology, if needed.

Mix and match is the name of the game.

    EDIT to add:

I use Dr Rachada at RAM for ophthalmology, the lady is hugely professional - I use Vision Centre to fill any prescriptions, the owner is very professional, sensible and fair.

Dermatology is Dr Siri, on the Moat or at various hospitals.

I like Mccormick and used to get lab work done there, until I found CMF Lab, which is a 4 minute walk from the NE corner of the Moat. Results sent to your email in about an hour, and they open every day at 6:30 am. Roughly 1/3 less than Mccormick. Like Mccormick, it is modest, but very clean and professional. My favorite lunch spot is by that bookstore over there, so I eat lunch with the savings.

Does CMF Lab have a phone number please? wai.gif

  7. I got my bill on Wednesday, paid on Thursday at 7-11; business as usual. I used to have auto debit, for when I was out of town, and it took a few hours to set up. Now, you don't even get a balance due if you use less than 50 Kwh, so no worries while you're gone. I think my condo has been sold four times in its 26 year history, and the bill is still in the original owners name. I was told that it is a common practice, and if I really wanted it in my name it could cost several thousand to rattle their cage at PEA.

  8. There is a private lab near the moat, that will do a gambit of urine/bloodwork for 499 thb. Might be a good starting point, especially if you want to save $$$ and actively participate in your own medical evaluations (researching what the different terms/ranges are and mean). For a while, everyone that went to a high rep hospital in BKK for a check-up, wound up getting referred to specialists and/or expensive scans.....kind of like the 9.99 usd oil change in the US...no one gets out of there for 9.99.....

  9. The most memorable spaghetti I've ever had was in San Francisco's Little Italy - Pasta a Vongole. I was amazed that the clams were served in their shells. You had to pry the meat out one-by-one and discard the shells on a dish.

That is a dish that I miss, but mine was further down Columbus Ave. in a neighborhood place near Fisherman's Wharf. I used to get it, to go, all the time when I was working down there.

Sushi/sashimi was too expensive back then to eat often - it was still pretty trendy - but I would imagine that there are much more reasonable options now.

Calamari Siciliano in SF was addictive. I used to be a regular at Basta Pasta at Grant/Vallejo, North Beach.

  10. I had a little trouble in BWT, but I thought it was the combination of Section/Sub-section/soi/house number. I'm having great luck in my Suthep condo. My parents repackage for me. I use the POs website to make the label, and the customs form is integrated into the mailing label, and I get a 10% discount. My mom says they seem surprised that someone actually knows how to ship overseas and all she does it hand it to them. We gamble on no tracking once it leaves the US. Just had 8 pairs of cotton socks arrive in 9 days......unopened in BKK.

  11. Play fair. I didn't say a thing about rent.

No, I know you didn't but we could. Given that housing expense is by far the largest percent of living expense compare two equal places in Thailand and the States like NYC and Bangkok or Chiang Mai and San Francisco or Pattaya and Las Vegas. I'm open to discuss any other city comparisons that may be better. Compare rent to rent. Single retired man is the area I am familiar with in both the States and Thailand.

The other day on CNBC; they quoted a study showing that retirees were surprised to find that housing related costs are their biggest expense, with the average retiree in the US, spending 45% of their income on housing related expenses. Seen a lot of Americans refinance their homes at age 50+, re-starting the 30 year clock. These are often amounts well over 2000 usd per month. Then there is the reverse mortgage, which has been impIicated to border on fraud. I think the law in Thailand, restricting mortgages to those under 65 is likely a good idea. For no cost it provides a lot of security for Thais.
