  1. I think you could buy a used house for somewhat less than it cost to build. You may want to consider selling the land, and buying a couple of used homes with the proceeds. A modest house in a great location will rent faster than a new house in the exurbs.....

I've seen quite a few younger couples holding moving sales, with a lot of stuff that is only a few months old. A lot of people thought they would come and teach and stay indefinitely. Apparently they didn't read the billion or so posts on various forums about the difficulties with paperwork, pay, job security, degree requirements, etc..

Does seem to be the slowest August for farangs out of the 7 that I have been here over the years. Noticeable decrease in the number of European summer vacationers.

  2. How many expats are high income in Chiang Mai? Where I come from, 8 million thb or 250K usd is considered high income......and of those....some don't drink, others only drink at home, and others refuse to pay high prices.

Median household income in Chiang Mai province is likely less than 30K per month.

  3. I actually think townhouses are the way to go.......that is in a better location, like the old city or Nimman. If you are buying with your wife or company, of course. At a certain point, walking WILL become popular in Thailand's larger cities. It may not even take 60 thb per liter gas.....motorbikes use so little...it might just be the gridlock is so terrible, that people settle for no yard for the convenience. Some of the coolest home patio areas I've ever seen, were rooftops. You can garden up there, too. Townhouses can have a lot of space, often more than homes....not good if you can't do the stairs though.

  4. Just about the only beer that has been discussed by several here as "undrinkable." But, if they are doing 3 large for 220 thb (which is not verified); then they are getting in the ballpark. The place next door to me shows the soccer until 3am and does 3 large Leos for 200....One big TV....I'm not a soccer fan, but they are surprisingly good neighbors. They had close to 100 people in there last night about midnight. 30-40 THB chicken on rice, from a new place next to it. Now seriously, how many of those 100 would be willing to pay 180 for a pint of draft?

  5. If you are prepared to pay for it (฿5,000, but 3 nights for 2 offers) then The Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit - opposite Robinsons at BTS Asoke and 4 minutes walk from SC. I used to stay there on business and it's frequented by business conference people and has good front door security. I'm sure they would put your kit safely away for you if you did not trust the in-room safes.

Try to get two key cards (tell them your wife is coming along later; might not work as they probably think you expect to have an ahem {clears throat} staying and they do have an eye to protecting guests against themselves, but give it a try). You can then leave the TV on and the do not disturb card on the door when you go out.

At the more affordable level (1,100 baht) Darjelling Boutique Hotel (3mins walk), which I used post retirement before buying a condo, seems pretty safe to me, but the room safes are maybe too small for a large laptop + accessories so ask first if they have an office safe. The place is small enough to have good front door guest recognition.

Both would nonetheless be 'guest-friendly' btw

I buy cigars at Sukhumvit rande Millennium.....very secure, they very politely escort me to the outdoor patio, which is a totally relaxing place in a frantically busy area. . Out of my budget, but they have a cigar store, and cigar bar......Has a good vibe.

Bringing girls in can change things a lot.....Nothing like good ole Ruamchitt Travelodge...great rooftop pool, total lady friendly...I think they keep ID until you give the go ahead.

What a hassle having baggage like that.

  6. McD completely overpriced in Thailand.

KFC much better value for money. (upsized Zinger Burger meal 104bht)

Chesters is good value for money too. (fish burger 29bht)

umm what? Mcdonalds anywhere outside of thailand aside from like korea or malaysia is 10 dollars for a big mac meal.

Mcdonalds is priced quite reasonably in thailand.

It proves this statement is 100% false.

I guess Michael Moore must have told you that, too. 2 McDoubles for 2 usd (1 each) all over the US. Complete BM Meal...less than 6, unless you're at LAX.

Or last time i was in upstate NY i paid over 10 dollars for a big mac meal.

That also doesn't change anything i said.....mcdonalds still isn't overpriced here.

    Big Mac Value Meal=5.69 USD........

  9. I did, Mesquite.....kind of nasty....but great location; if you prefer the (L)east side of town.......a can look past the stained paint, but not the malfunctioning , dangerous elevators. I would probably go with C-view, if I was bottom fishing.

  10. If I came in and it was 59 THB, I would probably say to myself, "well, everything else is a rip-off, might as well get the breakfast special." There would be a fair chance, that I would simply walkout without ordering anything. 17 THB 2 egg omelettes with rice, practically out my front door...........I don't think they will last until Thanksgiving..........That draft beer must be starting to get old by now.

  11. I doubt they would allow street food, if they were that concerned about the customers consuming food. I usually have to request a menu, also. The places really hard pressed for you to order food, stick that menu in your face well before you get your first beer. The same satay guy has been out front for years.......he delivers to your table or seat at the bar. Splurged and spent 35 thb on some nice pork satays the other night.....they were done perfectly.

  12. As of Friday night, Dayli had added one more promo; 6 large Asahi for 299 THB, and you get to enter the drawing for a new Ipad. I arrived at 7 pm, because I was already in the neighborhood, and they already had about 20 drinkers. Walked by several other pretty good promos in the area (4 small Carlsbergs for 200) and they didn't have a single customer. Also, couldn't help but notice about 1/3 of the seating at Beer Republic is dangerously close to the street; been afraid to look at their prices, but many seem to be enjoying themselves.

Dayli could use some classic rock, but the Thai pop at an appropriate volume is likely better for their clientele. My only real concern about Dayli is that it sits on a fairly large parcel of valuable land that would be prime for condo development. Enjoy it while we can........Does seem like the owner has connections in all the right places, but it's not my business, but I'll take the dividends. And in fact, I'm not even sure who the owner or GM is, perhaps a young Thai man named Thon, but that is mainly because I've never had any problem in there that needed the managers attention (8 years). Salud!
