  1. I can't understand how the tax is applied to bicycles for sale here at all - I want to import a KMX recumbent trike from Malaysia, particularly as they only charge US$100 for shipping to Bangkok, but as far as I can see I'll be liable for either 40% bicycle tax + 7% VAT or a whopping 80% tricycle tax + VAT!

At the same time I can't believe that many bike shops pay 40% bicycle tax - Schwinn, for example, are way cheaper here (in Rayong) than the normal price in the States even though they're only imported in very limited numbers so I would have expected them to be more expensive.

I think I'll have to ask my local friendly bike dealer if he can help, but does anyone have any experience about this?

Under Thai Customs HCC Codes bicycles made in other ASEAN countries (such as Malaysia) are supposed to be import duty exempt. There are also a good many other FTA exempted agreements for places such as Australia and NZ. Check out the Thai Customs codes on their web site and bikes come under 8712 heading Duty rates can be found at Tarif and then type 8712 into tarif box and click 'search'.

However if a bike is made in the US or Europe standard import duty is 30%. So if you are planning to bring in a bike from Malaysia it should be import duty free and only 7% VAT applicable. I think a lot of the 'US' bikes are actually made in Taiwan or now more so China. So if the bikes are shipped direct to Thailand from the manufacturer in Asia then duty would normally be zero. I think (but stand to be corrected) that the Schwinn Bikes (despite being a US brand) are manufactured in Asia. Tends to be the hand made bikes such as Ellsworth, Turner, Intense etc. that are still made in US.

  2. When I've had the (same / similar?) bugs in rice the usual trick is to put cloves of garlic in the storage container with the lid off - then watch the little critters scurry out in seconds! Once they're gone pop the lid back on but make sure it's airtight. You don't need to peel the garlic, just separate the cloves from the head and pop them in 'as is'. Not tried it with pasta yet, not had any bugs in mine lately.

  3. Just did the process myself the other week. Brit Embassy in morning, picked up 'Certificate Free to Marry' at 1pm hopped in taxi over to MFA. Take the foot bridge over the main road in front of the MFA, there is a place selling wood houses, next to that a coffee shop and a translation office - charged B.300 and took around 10 mins. Back over bridge to MFA submit papers and request 'express' service B.800 instead of the normal 400. Collected all finished docs from MFA at 4.25pm. Job finished in one day!!!

  4. Have been booting W-XP from the (partitioned HD) and it is always slow to get to where you can use, but hey, nip off and make a cup of coffee..... The other day it just would not start and locked out during boot up. Can get to the Windows screen where you have the option to start in safe mode, normally, or last best configuration. Tried them all and all that happens I get a blank screen with a (working) cursor.

Can you get to the Welcome screen? What about BSOD's (Blue Screen of Death)? If you can somehow manage get into Windows, download and run BlueScreenView as well as check the Event Viewer logs for errors.

Can get as far as Win XP windows logo then it locks out before reaching the welcome screen. But as mentioned, the mouse and speakers are powered up; mouse will move the cursor on the blank screen.

One item that might be a clue; when on Ubuntu I was asked to load an nVidia driver update, but think that was a few days at least before the problems started. Have started running some checks through some of the nVidia forums and seems there might be some issues between later drivers and Win XP??

Your recommended method for completely separate partitions seems to be the way to go though.

  5. Interesting (as in I am glad it is not my) problem

I have been thinking for a few minutes about this and have no good suggestions. My only comment would be that anything that involves re-installing XP will probably mess up your Ubuntu boot manager locking you out of Ubuntu as well, untii you can recover it.

Maybe this is God's way of telling you it is time to dump the dual boot and make more use of your vritual box :D

My only advice is tread carefully and I shall be watching this thread with interest hoping somebody more clever than me has some good tips for you which I can learn from

    Good luck

    Edit

I assume you have done all the obvious things like unplugging unneaded hardware and if you have a desktop checking that video cards etc are properly installed. I would not place too much hope on any of that working though because if I understand your post correctly Ubuntu is happy, but then again never underestimate the ability of Windows to mess things up

Yes, Ubuntu appears to be happy as everything seems to be working fine (kiss of death for sure!!) One thing I have noticed though; I get a full screen 'green flash' between Ubuntu loading and then actually opening at the user log in. Might be nothing?? Also my initial thought is that it might be something to do with the video driver as when I first experienced the problem with booting W-XP from the prompt (partition) the screen went blank and then the monitor went into 'Auto Configuration' before locking out completely at a blank screen.

I did run a disk check with Ubuntu system disk utility and it says on Smart data check of the HD that there are 2 bad sectors. Don't know what that means but it does not sound good!

In the early days playing around with Linux (last couple of weeks) I also downloaded Mint onto a DVD and ran that (from the disc drive) a couple of times but never loaded it onto the HD (hence my notice of the 'green-flash'). Have not installed any new hardware and the only plug in I have used is a thumb drive for copying files and transferring to my other desk top. This thumb drive is the one I originally loaded Ubuntu on - never wiped it as I figured I might well load on my other computer.

Yes, my big worry is that I might somehow lock my self out of Ubuntu in trying to solve this Win issue!!

  6. Have installed Ubuntu 10.04 and very happy with it indeed. Went down the recommended route; loaded onto memory stick for trial then partitioned the HD. Have used Windows XP less and less as I've got more used to Ubuntu. However, and until I can get the hang of some of the Linux software I still need to boot windows for certain applications such as Corel Draw, Nexus Radio, Adobe Photo Shop (trying Gimp) and IE8 (for certain web sites that will not load using Firefox).

Only way to get out of this is hold down the power button on the Acer desk top until it turns off. But it does not turn off fully as the speakers and mouse are still powered up after computer power light goes out.

Tried booting from the Disc drive using my W-XP disc and it says there is a problem with the hardware and I should run check disc - looks like it might well be to do with the partitioning???

Have loaded VM Virtual Box and can now run W-XP inside Linux but do not have the disc to load the various programmes such as Photoshop, and Corel Draw.

Anyone else had the same problems and how did you fix it??

    Thanks in advance - YS

  7. well does anyone know where in the pattaya or surrounding areas i can find metal halide and high pressure sodium lights, ive checked every lighting store in town and they dont have anything like that at all.... only high pressure mercury if thats a metal halide light as im not sure

Just ran a quick Google for MH lights in Thailand and came up with this company ENDO Lighting They are showing MH lights on their products list and located in Samut Prakarn, but I'm sure they would deliver (although not that far from Pattaya). We get plenty of goods sent down here to the south in Suratthani, so it's not too difficult.

As GotLost also recommends, try HomePro the one here in Surat has.

    Hope that helps.

  8. From a quick Google search seems that Algae farming (Spirulina) is quite well established in Thailand already and for quite a few years.

    DIC commenced in Thailand 1978

Andrew Zimmern (Bizarre Foods fame) visits Boonsom Farm

    Boonsom Farm CM

From the Wikipedia web site it seems Thailand is listed as one of the largest producers along with the US.

So I guess there is a potential?? MIL owns / runs a small shop right across the road from a junior school and one of the biggest sellers is the (Japanese style) Seaweed Snacks - so there's an idea.

But IA certainly hit the nail on the head with the 'whitening cream' if you can turn into that it's the Holy Grail for sure

  9. Yotspeed.....wow, thanks for the info. As I hoped, there is a break for 'eco' products.

A good imported inverter @ 10% is not too bad either. Have seen some complete systems that include both solar panels and inverters......maybe that would be clasified as 'eco' as well??

Batteries....I'm thinking because of weight, they would be expensive to ship and i'm sure lead acid truck and golf cart batteries would be available here.

Where and what brand of solar panels did you find locally @ 100thb/watt???

Was a while back. Made in Thailand by Bangkok Solar

The deep cycle and traction batteries are made in Thailand, will try and dig out company names. Readily available and prices not too bad.

  10. I wish I did have a stream near by to get hydro power.....as you say, it's the best 100% power 7/24.....but unfortunately all we have is this dam_n solar. Might as well make use of it. Have found good cheap sources of solar panels and will go for it. they are available locally @ 200thb/watt, but can get them overseas [by the pallet] @ $1/watt + shipping and duties.

And also agree with you on inverters and will go for the full sine wave types. Still researching sources and prices of that overseas, but know that LOS prices are over the top.

Best we found on local panels was around B.100 per Watt

  11. Hi Jaideeguy

We import many items for our boat building business and have brought in a wind generator and were told by Customs that there is now a flat rate duty of 5% on 'Eco' products - unless you can find a better rate for the actual product. The Customs Dept. does have a good web site where you can find out what the HCC code for a product is and check the duty rates. Customs web site

To find the code for a product click on 'Import Tariff' then click on 'Decree 2550' this opens a page that lists all products.

For PV Cells go to Chapter 85 Electrical and click. Search through this section and you will find PV cells under 8541.40 Back to the home page - click on 'Search for Import Tariff' and enter this code in the top box. Click search then click on 8541.40.20 From the page that opens the relevant (current) duty will be under '000 : Notification of the Ministry of Finance Section 12 of the Customs Tariff Decree B.E. 2530 (General Rate)' As you can see PV cells are exempted.

Inverters come under 8504.40.40 and have a duty rate of 10%.

Beware; Batteries get hammered at 30% and you also pay a 10% excise duty on top of the import duty.

    LED's are also zero rated.

    Hope this helps.

  12. I'm getting exactly the same thing when using Firefox, but IE is OK. I've noticed in the loading bar at the bottom of the page it is trying to access some adware and or statistics sites while the thread is loading. Mostly too quick to write down but the main one appears to be whos.amung.us - which appears to be a statistics site?? Tried blocking access to this site with Bitdefender but still have the same problem. Also tried the Control F5, log out, clear cookies and viruus scan as suggested in the Forum Support Desk section - but still get the same thing happening when trying to access TV in Firefox. IE still OK.

  13. Slapout,

Have done some checking and believe this is probably something like what I will go for. The one shown is fed with broken bails of straw. Others just eat the whole bale.

Cost is about USD 1,000 ex China, would be nice to find one here.

    Isaanaussie

OK I'm looking for advise here. The machine pictured will cost USD 1100 landed (CIF) here in Thailand. Does anyone have a better and cheaper alternative?

    Isaanaussie

Came across this Thai company when looking for some machinery - seems like they have a pretty diverse cross section of equipment and if they don't have it seems like they might well be able to make it ??Thai Sumi

  14. This one outside the office early one morning week before last. Malayan Pit Viper - very poisonous!! Fortunately had eaten a meal recently, (visible bulge in the lower body about the size of a mouse) so relatively docile and was able to shoo him off into the undergrowth behind the office. Not seen since.

Good web site with lots of info on Thai Snakes and here is the Viper

  15. The more I think about this the more it angers me, such disregard for human life. Wasn’t the last Tsunami bad enough to make them realize they should have an alert system that WORKS? It amazes me even more knowing that an IMPORTANT persons grandson died during the last Tsunami, a person that might not of died if an alert system was in place. You would think that the Thai's in power would take that to heart, and do everything they can to ensure history did not repeat it's self.

I think more than one person might regard the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of grandsons, sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, friends who died in the last Tsunami as important!!

  16. Your post was about as helpful as the thread you posted.

    Thanks.

OK - no need to PM me as the details of the bike shops in Surat already covered in post by Bike Thailand.

    2. Center Bike well worth a visit - good selection and reasonable prices as well as after sales service. On the main road through Surat town - about 200 mtr on opposite side after the main Surat Hospital in the direction of Tesco Lotus.

  17. Are there any decent bicycle shops for mountain or BMX bicycles in Samui (or Surat), not the type form tesco that fall apart after a week.

    no

    Nice Response 'Pasta Head'

Was covered in this thread in June; http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Koh-Samui-Mt...p;hl=bike+shops

A few good shops in Surat - you know, the same (Surat) that appeared in parentheses in the OP!

If you type 'bicycle' in the TV Koh Samui search engine you will see this topic has pretty regular (repeated) coverage.

Plenty of mountain bikes in the Donsak and Khanom areas - mostly purchased in (Surat).

There - that wasn't too difficult being helpful - was it??
