  1. Ramkhamhaeng offer a weekend course, or if you want to do Masters try King Mongkuts in North Bangkok.

Dhurakibundit is also another one close to you.

    Beano,

Are you sure you are not confusing the post-grad Diploma with a BA at Ram. As far as I am aware Ram (for courses taught in English in IIS) only has "full time" undergrad courses. The weekend Teaching diploma is a weekend course but as it is "post-grad" they require proof of a completed degree before you can register on it.

    Mark,

You will see that a degree from Ram IS acceptable outside of Thailand, ignore other misinformed posts.

    Secondly.....

NOTE that if you do not want to have to jump through additional hoops after completing your bachelor degree then you do not just need any bachelor degree, a BA is not good enough. You need a B.Ed.. According to current rules a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) alone is not guaranteed to satisfy the current Thai regulations (you currently have to spend a further 8 months part-time doing the post-grad diploma mentioned above), but a Bachelor in Education (B.Ed) is and will minimise any problems or additional hoop-jumping for Thai officials in the short and long term future. There are less of these available in the uni's (in English taught programmes) and they are only available in limited "education" related subjects, so, like many others, you may still choose to do a BA and hoop-jump as that currently works (at least till the next-tightening up of the regulations). If I could do it again I think I'd choose a B.Ed. just to be on the safe side. As you are starting out, who knows what hoops will be in place in three or so year's time when you graduate?

    ALL,

Yes I know you CAN get a job with a BA or less but officially as far as I am aware a B.Ed. is the officially quoted minimum.

Good luck, and happy course hunting.

  2. I am doing my CV like this:

Profile: bit about me and my situation

Then straight into my employment history with is all in the field of IT.

Then I am listing my qualifications including my degree and TEFL cert.

Is there anything I can add to it to make it more teacher-y or do they expect this type of CV from people with no relevant exerpeince?

Also, should I put a photo in my in the Word document?

    Thanks.

    HalfSquat

Don't do it that way. As you have not really got any real teaching experience, do a "skills" style CV and then you can easily highlight the skills and experience that you have gained that are teacher/teaching related. Search the web, visit the library, or a good bookshop to see how to format a "skills" style CV.

    Good luck.

  3. Hello Friends

I'm back in the states right now and having withdrawals from the hot food. I'm trying to make that simple fiery sauce they give you at all the food courts or small restaurants off the beaten path.

It's just the little red and green phrik khi nu peppers sliced thin in some kind of clearish liquid. It is Soooooo Hot!!! My Wife says the liquid is Soy Sauce but all we have here in USA is Kikoman or La Choy soy sauce..really dark and salty and not so good.

I see lots of recipes for Chili Lime sauce and Chili fish sauce but they not the same..Any Ideas all you hard core Thai food fans?

Maybe you mean Prik Nam Plaa?

4 md Clove Garlic, Finely Chopped

1/4 c Fish Sauce (Naam Plaa)

1 tb Hot Red Chili Or Cayenne Pepper Flakes, Crushed**

    1/2 c White Sugar

    1 c Warm Water

    6 tb Fresh Lime Juice

**To make it authentic, you should use Thai Prik Kii Nuu (Mouse Shit Peppers)

Yield: 1 3/4 Cups Of Sauce

  4. Hello all, first post here, I would like to know any information on the process of shipping personal household goods (electronics etc) into Thailand. What are the customs and duties and paperwork involved etc.

    Thanks for any help.

Work out your square meterage of items you will pack, list you items and then ask a local shipping agent for a quote. The ones I used were pretty good at answering all my questions on procedues and costs, duty etc.

    .

  5. Orangezeke,

Wow, they are some hefty quotes. I can see why you dismissed them. Maybe next time the mrs or a friendly Thai can go do the bartering whilst you stay out of sight.

If you can source a ladder then yes, there are many metal work places spread around here in BKK. I'm sure there will be others near you. As almost anything is possible here I'd guess one of them would do the work. You might even think about trying a sliding door place as they might have most of the parts you'd/they'd need to adapt to fit your ladder.

    Good luck.

  6. I suspect that is because many Thai "teachers" don't really realise what they are actually pronouncing,. They pronounce the correct word automatically as that is how they learnt it. If you ask them what tone a word is then that almost all take a second or two "trying the word out" to work it out before they tell you. Worst case I saw was one Thai language school teacher telling a whole class several times that if you saw a tone mark on a word (mai ek, tho, thrii, my cat's run a wah , etc, not a phonetic transliteration mark) it meant that that word was always pronounced with that tone. No consideration for class of consonant, vowel length, haw nam, finals etc. And worse still, when challenged on it by a student, she argued that the student was was wrong and she was right before very quickly moving on to the next part of the lesson.

I know we are all imperfect but that seemed a very fundemental mistake for a "Thai teacher" to make.

(edited for a spotted fundemental spelling mistake :) there might be more)

  7. hello,

i am on the prowl for a sliding ladder. you know the kind, with wheels at the bottom and a slide rail at the top. i don't want one to be manufactured especially, i had a quote prepared and i just about fell over:

stainless steel with aluminum treads - THB 36,000.

i am thinking only 2m high with a sliding range of 4m. has anyone seen an assembly kit type around ? are there any department stores with them on display ? i stumbled across this one at the new scg building on ram intra.

    ta

Sorry, not seen any like that for sale, will keep a lookout. Might seem an obvious question, and I'm not trying to insult you, but did you try asking them where they sourced their ladders from?

  8. Dear Scottish Thailander, I enjoy a good discussion.

To cover the points you mentioned. It took a long time to produce the recordings, both speakers had to learn the book to record it with a teaching style and not just read the text. Also there were many mistakes so a lot of lessons had to be rerecorded several times. So it was slow and hopefully to a high standard but as there was not an official release of the CD yet we need to wait for opinions as more listeners will give a more accurate evaluation of our work. Hope you agree with that.

You did not listen to the whole book but just one lesson. There are fewer and fewer examples of referring to charts in the book as the work becomes more advanced. Have you ever listened to the Callan Method recordings? There are also no prompts in Callan. So on this one you are losing a mark. The idea of the Walen Method came from Callan and not sure if you know but Callan is very successful. Judging by the student numbers Walen is getting more and more popular too.

The spelling and vocabulary recordings will be made as soon as we are able to complete book 3 to our satisfaction. In book 3 we do not spell words anymore as by that time our students can spell any Thai word almost like Thai people.

"Advice was, as was the feedback, free. If you want a business consultant full time then make me a reasonable offer and I could be persuaded".

I would be very much interested in you being our business consultant but you would need to pass an interview first. To be a Walen consultant you would need to be better at business than us so we can learn from you. How can we establish that? We are always looking for talent.

Both your advice and feedback were carefully read. Thank you.

    MacW,

Glad to see you are taking some points into consideration (i.e. the spelling), just a pity you are not fully completing the book 1 cd before issuing it. I assume that anyone who buys the book 1 cd now would get a free replacement cd when you add that additional spelling etc...?

Yes, I agree by book 3 the students may find it excessive as they are already at a good enough standard.

No, I have not listened to the whole book, as you only supplied a part of lesson 1.

Nor have I ever listened to the Callan cd's. However, just because they do not include the prompts does not prove that they also have failed to establish the most effective recording strategy and that you should copy this. I/we would need more info on this. Therefore, if you are scoring, which I was not, I would like to retain my "mark" until proof I am wrong is established.

I do not pretend to be "better" at business than you. Thailand, in my opinion, is full of failed, opinionated "experts" spouting a lot of nonsense about subjects that they know nothing about. I do believe that I can add to any business, giving a valid alternative opinion when required, adding support and constructive criticism when required, and contributing in many other ways to it's success. I have 20 years or so of international corporate experience, most of those in project management, IT, training/teaching, and consultancy roles. If you were serious and able to offer a reasonable package of renumeration, work permit, etc., then I would be willing to discuss things further. Obviously, not in detail on this forum.

    Regards.

Where did you get those saving ideas from? We were not trying to save neither time nor money, I was done the way it is done on purpose. It works very well, we tested it. And if this is a quality product or not time will show and the student's progress. We will be selling it as set with a book.

Walen School - Why Not To Try For Yourself?

    www.thaiwalen.com

    .

    MacW,

    1) The reason I added the time/quality(specification)/money(cost) is that all business developments(projects) are influenced by the "Project Management Time/Specification/Cost Triangle" or what others call the "Iron Triangle". If one of these points is moved it affects one or both of the other two.

    For example:

You are given the options of Fast, Good and Cheap, and told to pick any two. Here Fast refers to the time required to deliver the product, Good is the quality of the final product, and Cheap refers to the total cost of designing and building the product. This triangle reflects the fact that the three properties of a project are interrelated, and it is not possible to optimise all three – one will always suffer. In other words you have three options:

    • Design something quickly and to a high standard, but then it will not be cheap.
    • Design something quickly and cheaply, but it will not be of high quality.
    • Design something with high quality and cheaply, but it will take a long time.

This was relevent to your cd product.

Additionally, if you are going to make/keep your school successful then it must also operate on these principles of it will eventually fail as it has failed to meet one of these:

    • Give the Students lessons that are long and high quality (amount of individual attention,teachers/books/cd's etc.), but therefore will not be cheap.
    • Give the Students lessons that are long and cheap, but therefore will not be of high quality.
    • Give the Students lessons that are high quality and cheap, but therefore lessons will be shorter.

    2) I did not mention, but had recognised the point one poster (SoftWater) who commented on the reason why you may not make the cd fully featured is that that would lose you new students as they would not need your teachers. I both agree and disagree. The cd may lose you some but will be so beneficial to others that you will then see the 4x faster claim more likely to appear true and may get more students signing up if the teachers are of good enough quality to add value to the basic "repetition is all that is needed" argument. If the latter is true then there is no need to go to any school anyway as anyone can sit and repeat a few Thai sentences over and over alone. I believe your teachers, if they are quality teachers, and you lose the bad ones and take on good ones, can add a lot and that will be worth the fees to attend lessons (provided the price reflects the benefits that the teachers are adding).

    3) However, point 3 here is more important than point number 1. Your response is likely to have also repeated a mistake you have previously made with other posts. You "appear" to have fixated your reply on the least relevent aspect as you find it easier to answer and in order to distract attention from your failure to answer the pertinant most relevent points of the post. In this case the important points were:

    • That the cd should be in line with the Walen/Callan method and therefore not cut what some may consider two of the very important features, namely the teacher's actions/prompts or the spelling.

This, whether intentional or not, does not give a good impression of your management, or the quality, of the school. You must answer ALL the raised points/questions.

    4) Quote: "And if this is a quality product or not time will show and the student's progress."

Sorry, but I also need to disagree with this statement as basic scientific principles of proof apply. You have no control group/basis on which to measure "progress". Unless you produce two cd's, one with the prompts/spelling omitted, and one withe the prompts/spelling included, and then run a control group without a cd, against a group with the basic cd, and against a group with the enhanced cd, then you will not be able to measure the students comparative progress and therefore the quality of the relevent cd's. My money, as already stated would be on the enhanced cd with the prompts/spelling.

    5) Advice was, as was the feedback, free. If you want a business consultant full time then make me a reasonable offer and I could be persuaded.

    Regards.

(Reason for edit: Add Softwater's name)

  10. The Walen book actually has exactly what you say, prompts for pen etc. While recoding however we decided not to record them so the rhythm is not lost. Also most of those things are quite easy to guess.

    MacW,

Sorry to disagree but if the point of the Walen/Callan method repetition is to enable the student to answer the question correctly then the student must know the relevency of the question so as to be able to automatically answer correctly. Without these prompts the student has no clue as to what there answer should be. Missing these prompts out would more likely cause the student to lose the rhythm. Conversly, by including the prompts on the cd the rhythm will not be lost as it will then mirror the rhythm in your classes. In my opinion therefore, the prompts need to be on the cd. I would advise you to reconsider and include the "prompts".

Secondly, especially as this is the "Book 1" introduction to Thai and 100% of the true beginner (and many of the false beginner) students will be unable to recognise the characters, I would also advise you that each new word's spelling (and its order) needs to be included on the cd when each new word is introduced. Yes, I know your teachers are suppposed to do the spelling in class but from what I have seen the lack of alphabet knowledge when beginning is a major obsticle for many students that I see seriously struggling ( :D:D:) ) with this in your classes and, as the purpose of the cd is (I assume) to assist the students in your classes then, they need this on the cd too. I can read most of the words anyway (false beginner :D ) but the provision of the spelling is definately required by real beginners and would not detract from flow (again, it would mirror your proper classroom practices) and it would reinforce the word's spelling for those (like me) that can recognise the characters but are not yet competent spellers. At this beginning level, both would surely be beneficial. I would think that the spelling in book 2 onwards would also benefit from the spelling of new words for the same latter reasons (reinforcement, and mirroring class practices).

Surely the cd should be in line with the Walen/Callan method and not cut what some may consider two of the very important features, namely the teacher's actions/prompts and the spelling?

I would hope you are looking to produce a quality product to support what you purport to be a quality course. It would be a shame to sacrifice the quality for a small saving on the time and/or cost saving whilst producing the method's cd product.

    Regards.

  11. I see 14 downloads of our lesson 1 so far, that is not too bad as for one day. Any opinions? All are appreciated.

    MacW,

One observation, the listener has no idea what the teacher would be holding up/pointing to etc. Maybe before the question you could insert what the teacher is doing, etc.

    Eg.

In English : "Teacher holds up a pen"

In Thai: "What's this?" PAUSE "It's a pen."

In English : "Teacher points to the window"

In Thai: "Is this the floor?" PAUSE "No, it's a window."

    etc...

Then the student will have to work out what answer they are supposed to be giving. That would mirror what the lessons should be like in class.

  12. Is TAT still trying to prevent the Chinese bus tours that bring their own packed lunches? :)

They are the cheapest tourists on earth! There is no way the average chinese tourists spends as much as a farang tourist. They all do the bus tours, eat at buffets that give discounts or do sack lunches...comeon man, experience Thailand!

    You couldn't be more wrong.

I'm always surprised that some people write something without checking the facts.

I wrote about this already quite some time ago.

    A Chinese tourist (2007 figures) spends more per day -Baht 4.397,51/day- than any European tourist;

only the USA tourist spends more -4.694,16-, next to tourists from India -4.700,76, Australia -4.567,65-, some Middle East countries and S. Africa.

    Here you go:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/So-farang-To...32#entry2129232

    LaoPo

For "family" tourists I may agree LaoPao, but based only on that chart as evidence I would guess from looking at those figures that the entertainment figures do not cover the "hidden" entertainment of the other "sex" tourists as the amounts listed would not even cover a short time bar fine, let alone the money for the girl (or so I'm told :D ). I would guess that many US, UK, and other European tourists are more likely to partake in this comparatively "expensive" daily entertainment than the "average" Chinese tourist, therefore the figures may be a little off depending on how they were calculated and the accuracy of their source(s). I will leave the debate over how much of a variance this would make and numbers involved to other more knowlegable tourist counters.

Just my tuppence: take it or leave it.

Mark Twain popularized in the U.S. Benjamin Disraeli's statement, "There are three kinds of lies:lies, dam_n lies, and statistics." That sardonic journalist, author, and speaker recognized the persuasive power of authoritatively made numeric presentations to a largely innumerate public.

And Wihelm Stekel: "Statistics is the are of lying by means of figures."

  13. What's the usual requirement to be a lecturer at a University in BKK? The English speaking ones like ABAC.

From what I have been told....

Loving it enough and/or being rich enough to do it for the pittance paid. Like schools here there are some premium positions and payers but most are pretty low paying. Some Uni's pay less than 30k per month. Guest lecturers that have a position in the US, UK, etc., can get more for a one off course but unlikely to be recruited full time at that higher level of salary.

Minimum qualification legally is a BA GPA 2.8+ but they are also unlikely to want you long term at that level as they desire Masters or preferably Ph.D qualified lecturers to add status to their Uni/faculty.

Compare that to school teachers in decent schools here on 50k+ and it seems a little odd, :) but TIT.

    Hope this helps.

    .

  14. After several years of teaching myself Thai and joining various Thai language courses designed for foreigners, I'd like to know if it is possible to do a BA Degree in Thai Language at any of the major universities in Bangkok?

I believe Andrew Biggs did something like this at Rangsit but I'm not sure.. If anyone has any experience, recommendations or links for where it would be possible for a foreigner to do this I'd be very grateful.

    Cheers!

Andrew Biggs did it at Ramkhamhaeng.

    Thanks guys.

I do think I have sometimes seen garan above imported words that were not silenced though. However, as I can't come up with an example off the top of my head, that may well be just my bad memory. :)

  16. The words; "Wikipedia", "Unbiased" and "factual" sit uncomfortably together in my mind.

Does that mean you disagree with t overall content.

The Thais are usually silent in class

    Don't make me laugh.

The teachers will avoid introducing dialogue into the classroom or eliciting response from the students - to give a wrong answer would be to lose face in the presence of one's peers, a situation that in Thai culture must always be avoided.

    overstated

Our students tend to uphold teachers as demi-gods."

    Maybe twenty years ago.

Qualified native teachers with a background in linguistics will ensure that students are exposed to both major variations of the language and understand them and their differences, whichever version the students choose to speak.

Maybe in fairyland, but for 30,000THB you are not going to get many qualified native speaker linguists.

Currently, to teach English in licenced schools, public or private, the minimum academic qualification for native speakers, is a bachelor degree in any subject.

    This is not happening.

However, the government is in the process of exercising greater control, particularly to combat the use of bogus certificates or degrees issued by diploma mills, and to prevent access to schools by persons with doubtful motives.

The government doesn't do anything unless a scandal hits or a jealous Thai teacher reports a dodgy native speaker to the authorities.

Nothing to disagree with here in Garro's comments.

  17. Moving and selling up? Drastic move and unfair. You could always apply the Thai way of dealing with it....Might shut them all up, even the threat of action might stop further comments.

Sorry this is a bit long (copied from elsewhere on TV (TV lawyers advice) but forgotten the link......

    Defamation of Character

    Criminal Liability

Criminal liability for defamation is covered by Sections 326 to 333 of the Thai Penal Code, which provide for punishment by imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine not exceeding Baht 20,000, or both. The Penal Code also provides that any imputation made upon a deceased person to a third party, which is calculated to impair the reputation of his/her father, mother, spouse, or child, or to expose the deceased to hatred or contempt, is an offense. Defamation committed by means of publication of a document, drawing, painting, cinematograph, picture, or letters made visible by any means, gramophone record, or any other recording or broadcast is punishable by imprisonment not exceeding two years and a fine not exceeding Baht 200,000.

The Thai Civil and Commercial Code (CCC) has defamation provisions, but does not distinguish between libel and slander. In the chapter on Wrongful Acts, Section 423 of the CCC, it states that any person who, contrary to the truth, asserts or circulates as a fact that which is injurious to the reputation or credit of another, or his earnings or prosperity in any manner, shall compensate the injured party for any resulting damage. Being unaware that a statement is false does not constitute a defense, provided the person ought to have known it was false. Section 447 of the CCC gives the Court a right, upon application of the aggrieved party, to order other measures, either instead of or in addition to payment of damages, for the rehabilitation of the injured party’s reputation.

Claims for damages arising from defamation are barred after one year from the date the wrongful act and person responsible became known to the injured person, or ten years from the day when the wrongful act was committed (Section 448). If, however, damages claimed arise from a wrongful act which is also punishable under criminal law for which a longer period is prescribed, then such period also applies to the civil action. For the purpose of achieving faster results, criminal actions are filed much more frequently than civil suits. Defamation actions are often reported in the press.

    Defense Against Criminal Libel

There are three defenses to a charge of criminal libel:

    • The statement is true, unless the defamatory imputation is of a personal nature and would not be of benefit to the public.
    • A fair comment was made in good faith -

    1. By way of self-justification or defense.
    2. For the protection of any legitimate interest.
    3. Upon the status of an official in the exercise of his functions.
    4. By way of fair report in the proceedings of any.

    • The opinions or statements expressed during proceedings were by the parties involved, their lawyers, or their witnesses.

Under Section 332 of the Penal Code, the Court may order destruction of the defamatory matter and that publication of the Court’s judgment be made in one or more newspapers once or several times at the expense of the guilty party.

    Civil Liability

There are two defenses to a civil action for defamation:

    • Justification, where the defendant in a civil action may escape liability if he/she can prove that the statement was substantially justified, i.e. true, but more than just true. There has to be a valid reason for having made the statement even if true. It is not an absolute defense to a criminal prosecution for libel to prove that the statement was simply true.
    • Privileged communication, where a person may make a communication in good faith to persons having a rightful interest in it, even though the information given may later be found to be erroneous. For example, in Dika (Supreme) Court Case No. 938/2519, the Thai Bankers Association circulated a notice to its members warning them that the action of a group of persons which included the plaintiff might be damaging to the members’ business.

The action of the Thai Bankers Association was held to be a valid protection of a legitimate interest.

Opinions or statements expressed during court proceedings are privileged.

Another form of privileged communication involves statements made by members of the Senate or the House of Representatives of the National Assembly when stating facts or opinions or in casting votes. No charge or other manner of action can be brought against such legislative members. This privilege extends to printers and publishers of the Legislative Minutes and to persons permitted by the presiding member to give statements of fact or opinion at such sittings.

    Insult to Character

There is another offense under the Penal Code, namely insult, as provided for under Section 393 of the Penal Code stating that whoever insults any person in his presence or by publication shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding one month or a fine not exceeding Baht 1,000, or both.

Insult is also one of several grounds for divorce.

Defamation is more serious than mere insult. Defamation must involve publication to third parties and must lower the plaintiff in the eyes of right-thinking members of society. However, insult does not have such an effect and need not take place before any person other than the plaintiff.

The need for insult provisions in the law is better appreciated with some knowledge of the Thai language and of the Thai mental approach to life and social relations. It is a characteristic of Thais that they are particularly sensitive to personal abuse, which is taken very seriously. The Thai language contains many colorful expletives which, while not defamatory, are exceedingly hurtful to the sensitive Thai. Such phrases lose their significance in translation and might seem comparatively innocuous to westerners.

Examples include aye sat, meaning “you are such a base and low creature”, or aye haa, meaning “you are physically sick”, while aye baa means “you are mentally sick”.

For many reasons, but principally because of the delay and cost of litigation in Thailand, courts see few insult actions except as a basis for divorce. Insults, however, can lead to nasty altercations and confrontations, so being polite at all times cannot be stressed often enough.

While damages awarded in defamation cases are minimal, the time and expense consumed in prosecuting or defending these actions can be massive. It is important to realize that in Thailand nothing detrimental to any business or individual is permissible because of Thailand's strong laws against negative comments about individuals, businesses or officials. Defamation is both a civil and criminal offense in Thailand.

The final judgment can be ANY amount which the court approves, including jail time. It is in line with the perceived amount that the defamatory statements have cost the business. So, if the business claims you have cost them 2 million baht in lost business and reputation, they can then claim this in a civil suit.

  18. Otis = โอทิส

    Leila = เลล่า

Still learning but wouldn't that first one be pronounced "otiT" as the "s" final consonant would change to a "t" sound? Can't you do something to keep the "s" sound by adding an "" or something? Sorry to be pedantic but this is a guy wanting to permanently tattoo his arm. I guess he wants it 100% correct or at least to know the options/possibilities/limitations of translation.

Could it be โอทิซ์ ? As I said, still only learning.

EEK may be they should warn tourists before entering Thailand! i.e. VIDEO CAMERAS are Illegal!! :)

P.S, do you have a link for this law cos its the time i heard of it! lol

Not online, but the nearest I can give you is that it is referred to in the latest constitution and more specifically is detailed in the Broadcasting Act.

Try this for an example to start (and probably finish as nothing decent is available in English especially online to show you. Get the legal books out if you want to see how ambiguous, (and therefore adaptable to suit those in power) the Thai laws are. As I said, unlikely to be implemented but using a video is technically film making (as a solicitor/lawyer has advised me)and therefore these 'could' possibly be applied...

NOTE: As you can see, the POLICE are basically the ones who decide what is relevent, and when and who to apply it to so... the police are policing the police who are policing us. TiT.

Oh, and before you say it, they (the police) are also the ones who decide what is "in the public interest".
