  1. I have done some research and it seems that the "official" Bangkok Bank policy is that the account holder must have the required amount money (400,000 or 800,000 baht) in the account for at least 4 months prior asking for the letter. If the condition is not met, then the bank asks for blocking the funds for 4 months. Why the bank would impose more stringent requirements than the immigration is not clear...
  2. Has something like this (money blocked for 4 months) happened to anyone living outside of Bangkok or Pattaya?
  3. Thailand has 2.5% of poverty in the same way that it has 2.5% unemployment. In my area in Isan, both rates are closer 97.5%. Maybe they didn't pay attention and published the stats in reverse...
  4. Especially if these operations are done on the black market, preventing them to register in official stats. The explanation provided above, involving Vietnam, appears to be the most convincing, since one wonders how impoverished Cambodia could afford buying such quantities of gold. It is not so much that the baht is appreciatiing but that the USD is fast sinking. Currencies are engaged in a race to the bottom and the baht is just a laggard...
  5. The collusion of these two guys would be Thailand worst nightmare.
  6. Here dogs have more rights than humans (like cows in India). As for pellet guns, back home we used to play with them in the 60s. Maybe in a couple hundred years they will catch up with the rest of the world. All in due time...all in due time...
  7. I don't know if you were conscripted, as I was, but it is everything except becoming a man, unless you consider cleaning the floor, standing guard or playing football as necessary to become a man...while losing 2 years of your youth...
  8. Looking for someone who knows a reliable contact in Sisaket, in order to avoid conscription for my son next year. Reward if successful.
  9. It is surprising to see so many woke-jacobins on this forum...immediately resorting to name calling since they don't have any contradictory arguments to offer...which only reinforces the points made by the poster under attack...
  10. Very well put. These ridiculous tariffs are typical Trump and are going to create major pain in East Asia, as well as in the US. Meanwhile, it is very likely that the US trade deficit will remain as it is, and so will the budget deficit, despite all the talking and senseless measures.
  11. Sheryl, is there an official document showing which remittances or incomes are assessable and which are not? I am more specifically interested in retirement pensions, about which I have many contradictory informations.
  12. Many say that the US dollar is strong. Well, they haven't looked at the Thai baht! Thai Central Bank: "when I say jump, you say?" Thai baht: "how high?" What justifies Thailand having the strongest currency in the world? Free cannabis? Meanwhile the government is complaining, the exporters are complaining, the tourists are complaining, and the retirees are contemplating their incredible shrinking pensions.
  13. I think you are right. It has nothing to do with the amount, since I always send less than 1,000 euros, and yet my recent transfers to Bangkok Bank took more than one day, until I changed the reason for transfer and stopped ticking long term stay.
  14. From all the comments above, I think that AAArdvark sums things up correctly when he says that Wise is inconsistent. No two posters share the same experience. It looks as if the system was tailor made for each one of us, but it obviously is not the case. More probably, Wise is running one of these algos financial institutions are so found of, leading to what appears to be an erratic system.
  15. It is not related to the receiving bank, because Wise has told me so. In fact I only received their message that the money has been sent the next day. And according to Wise the reason for the delay is the currency conversion, which is not credible considering all the comments above.
  16. It is no big deal as long as you are not transferring the money in order to help someone who urgently needs it.
  17. Mine arrive at 14.01 hours. I will try your system of sending the transfer before 7AM...
  18. For 2 months now, my transfers (euro to baht) have taken 24 hours instead of the usual 24 seconds, or minutes, as was the case for the past 5 years. I have contacted Wise repeatedly because they were not exactly willing to provide explanations for these delays. Reading between their lines, and all the blah blah, it appears that these new delays are here to stay. In other words, Wise is now behaving like a regular bank, keeping its customers' money as long as possible, especially overnight, in order to rake in interest money. On top of the big step backwards taken by Wise, it doesn't help that they haven't judged necessary to inform their customers of this significant change, but rather keep on pretending that everything is as usual.
