  1. Actually to my experience the Bangkok Comedy Collective nights are not just internet jokes, most of it is new and new everytime I've been, with a lot of improvisation and audience participation. Obvious Punchline are veteran professionals so I wouldn't expect that standard with everyone at an open mic, but some of the acts at The Londoner are as good as any.

  2. Hey!

I've seen threads on BB guns so I guess this is the way to go to getting what is effectively a gun replica. But if I want one where the quality of the mechanisms are not very important (although it must function, cock, remove magazine etc) but it must look very real so that someone can not tell it isn't what suggestions do people have and where? I've repeatedly seen Saphan Lek and Seacon Square right?

    Cheers

  3. :o Please don't associate me with that gross generalisation. Hope you get your barnet sorted out.

    L

Its not me nor yourself making that generalisation but John_Rambo.

  4. I think he's male. Probably best to move it to the gay forum IMO.

    Yes I'm male.

So any guy wanting to get his hair straightened is gay. Hmm....

  5. Price is not the factor but stylists who know what they are doing is!

Also how does Yuko compare to Shishedio or L-Oreal.

    Thanks!

  6. Jookster it is very difficult to get a set changed if you don't like it, although we have changed a set before - seems that if you buy a more expensive model than the one you already purchased you have a bit more leaway.

Are they difficult to get a set changed if there is a fault of some kind?

    Thanks

  7. Just to confirm this is a standard definition TV.

In regards to 720p and 1080p there really aren't that many differences, don't get caught up in the "True HD" marketing hype, Its very difficult to distingush between 720p and 1080p till you start getting into 70"+ sizes.

OK ..Ignore the experts say its all hype and every single tv shop in the UK is fooling you !!

You cannot watch HD quality tv on a tv which has the same standard as what you are watching now !

If you are not interested in HD tv fair enough....there are some superb standard defintion CRT tvs of up to

32 inches for as lilttle as Baht 14000 at Big C. Why pay more ?

If you've ever watched HD tv you would never go back to the old standard. The difference is breath taking and its available in Thailand now by satellite.

Don't really understand what the rant is about, If you want I can set up a blind test to see if you can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a TV, I have installed a lot of 768, 720 and 1080 systems and even with a 1080p source (I have many) there is no perceptable difference to my eyes from 720p to 1080p until you go above 60 inches. This is all of course measured at the suggested viewing distance from the TV.

TrueHD was a phrase coined by Sony to try and distinguish the PS3 from the (at the time) 720p xbox 360, when the PS3 games came out at 1920x1080 not a single one to date looks as good as Gears of War on the xbox 360 (which is a 720p game).

I have HD-DVD and a library of HD-DVD's but if you are suggesting that someone gets a Tv that is twice the price simply to watch a Dutch/Belgium or whatever news channel then that is absurd.

Buy the SD Plasma now, Two years time when UBC do HD buy a HD TV at the same price as the SD Plasma is now, you will have two TV's for the price of buying a single HD TV now and won't have missed anything.

Agree with you on all counts Ben. Unfortunately too many posts meant you missed my question of how easy it is to get a television set changed if you feel it is substandard, but anyway!

Unless you have a HD DVD player (not just an upscaling one) and the discs to go with it (and even then no one knows the future of HD DVD) then just stick with an SD one!

  8. That's a very interesting reply Ben. Thanks. Perhaps there is more than a little politics to the AV magazines since without stating differences there would be no reviews and thus no magazines.

I am pretty sure now I will get a 42 ED Plasma TV but I might but the 50 inch Samsung. Not 100% sure.

Isn't there a fair difference between the processing of the LG and Samsung models, the Farajouda processing of the LG gives a hel_l of a name of it. Whilst the Dnie of the Samsung has not been received so well.

In regards of support what do you mean exactly? Also how easy is it to say "this set has a problem, change to it to another one thanks" in Thailand.

    Cheers again Ben

  9. Yes that is my experience, the best UBC picture I have seen yet has been through my SD Projector 840x480 via S-Video upconverted to component.

HDTV's seem to struggle with making UBC presentable.

Are you saying that using a S-video cable between the UBC consumer box and the TV will result in much better picture?

Does the newer UBC consumer boxes have S-Video?

Yes the picture will be noticably sharper and the whites will not bleed.

Are the up-converters available as a separate component addon?

I have a 42" Panasonic plasma TV for going on 18 month now and am very happy with the picture quality. However it has one feature that makes for really good quality images and it has a native mode VGA input to it. So I have a media center PC dedicated to the TV and the video playback colors, resolution are excellent.

So what model tv is it?

    Cheers

  10. UBC sat and digital cable boxes have s-video. S-video *can* be better than composite. It depends on the quality of the comb filter in your TV. Composite=color+light info mixed and sent on the same cable, and separated by the comb filter. S-video (separate video)= color and light info sent on separate cables, so no comb filter needed. Some TVs have lousy comb filters, others have extremely good ones making the two indistinguishable. Upconversion is when a lower quality video is processed through some DSP into higher quality video. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't.

LCDs, even though they've come a long way are still not comparable to plasmas in the contrast and color department. Yes, there are the million to one contrast LCDs, but those are prototypes (they use area lit LEDs to achieve that) and I have no doubt they will cost a pretty penny when they start becoming available. Plasmas are more comparable to CRTs, but of course they do have their bad points, mainly the resolution and burn-in, not to mention the life of the screen itself (it's based on tech similar to a fluorescent bulb).

Really depends on a lot of things. Do you want future proofing? HD-DVD and blu-ray are here, although not widespread, but with the available copying of the content, you can expect it to be widespread soon enough (look at how DVD turned out). Do you want to be stuck with a TV that can't do the picture justice? How much are you willing to pay? Is this going to be a short-term TV? Etc. etc.

Personally, I got a Benq, for MUCH MUCH less than a Sony, yet the specs were much better (think about it, I got 1920x1080 resolution when Sony didn't even have a model that supported that... and I got it for less than what Sony's selling them for now, more than a year later). It's still working well. I really don't like the idea of blindly praising OR condemning a brand, because the BRAND is not equal to the PRODUCTS. There have been many examples of leading brands producing lousy products, and the other way around. Sony does *usually* make good products, but I personally feel that they're way overpriced for what they do. Yes, I do own some Sony products, but I don't make my decisions based on the brand. My friend owns a few Sony notebooks, and although he likes the style, the actual *function* leaves a lot to be desired.

What do you mean by processed into higher quality video? Exactly!?

    Cheers

Svideo will always be better than composite, by some margin. However what I would like to ask is the difference between Svideo and and Svideo 'upconverted' to component. What does that even mean exactly?
