Thailand excels on soft living and convenience. There's probably not another country in the world that allows you to quickly grab a gh, hotel, condo. The availability of Western food is simply everywhere. All manner of conveniences are everywhere including things like massages and other services that would be considered luxury abroad. The trouble is when you take these things away. Other issues are making it difficult for the people that enjoy these services to utilize them long term. Of course, safety, health, law... The amount of taxes that are placed on travelers both arriving in departing are out of control.

For now. As infrastructure builds out and Thailand continues to flounder... It's all but lost Japanese and Chinese. I think the European and most western nations are pretty much finished with Thailand as well. Been there done that. The only viable segment are the extremely budget conscious Indians and the equally skint single male travelers. The problem with the ladder is that the f2f p4p industry has entirely died. I recall when Thailand had a mere few million per year. I built those numbers primarily on the fact that it existed and exists as the regional international hub for travel to neighboring countries. Need to ask yourself what is the draw to Thailand? Is it safe? Can I get treated in a hospital and not get ripped off? If I have a legal issue with the police or be treated fairly?

I don't like / trust Vietnamese people, but that's me. If you think you're an outsider in Thailand... Wait till you settle in Vietnam! There's no denying the country is going to steal Thailand's itinerant expat population as well as all it's industry. I enjoy the buzz of Bangkok, but I'd be gone if I weren't married to a Thai national. Thailand simply doesn't care about resident expats (O). Retirement visa requires 65k pm. Thats the salary of three BKK office workers - maybe four. What do we get? Nothing. Now, taxes ... Thailand feels stagnant, rudderless, x rates suck hugely.

It's always contact hours although they may additionally specify additional courses or EC's, meetings... You need to ask loads of specific questions about additional work if that's an issue with you. I'd advise you to be very careful with the questions otherwise they might get a bad vibe. Asking about weekend work is legit. Asking about additional work during the typical work day is not legit. Remember you are a salary employee and that very different from being an hourly employee If you are beginning teacher and the school is otherwise ok I'd advise to suffer it. Learn how to run activities, how summer school works, national exam prep, etc. You want to become a master teacher that can be dropped into anything and have confidence, excel at most everything. The confidence it will bring will get you hired anywhere you are remotely qualifed. Schools have a multitude of individuals that won't (can't) do the job. Be the teacher that can. Be the teacher that helps students academically and with activities and projects. This gets back to the school quickly and positively. You'll become a favorite of Ss because you are competent, helpful not because of games and being funny. So, do the extra and learn from it. If the school is ok and you are unhappy finish the year and jump jobs. Begin TCT licencing modules asap. *Reading Writing is serious. L/S is bullshi+

Daughter does indeed appear like she's not in control of her party or the government. Thailand had a second taste of Taksin2. No idea what's going to fix the country economically at this point. I know a lot about food and I know a lot about Thai food. I know a lot about foreigners as well. I know that foreigners dislike Thai food. I know that you are going out for some bland pork or bland chicken otherwise you would have stated the Thai dish. Rubbish. A holiday... That's why the nation's education system is in the state that it is. If you are willing to work hard and get off your ass and move about... anything is possible. I left disgusted with coworkers (note I'm not using the word teachers) at something like 85k net includes bonus. Admin was just as weak. I would say 10% of the foreign teachers are functional human beings. The rest of them are some of the biggest losers I've ever encountered in my life. This goes double for female teachers.

They are not backpackers. Rather, they are 30 something failures unable to gain employment in home countries now in Thailand holding Thai students education hostage. It's criminal. Many teachers are also running away from huge debts as well. They are paid what they are worth. Evidence: they stay on.
