Entire communities were bombed, families were displaced, and generations grew up amid violence. Western forces have been credibly accused of war crimes, unlawful killings, torture, and night raids that left civilians traumatised. Many of the refugees arriving now are people who grew up in that chaos. Mental trauma, displacement, and breakdown of social systems have consequences. To take a statistic - stripped of context - and use it to imply that Afghans as a group are somehow predisposed to sexual violence is racist. It blames an entire nationality for the actions of individuals and ignores both demographics and the West’s role in destabilising their country. Sexual offending exists in every society. British men commit sexual offences. American men commit sexual offences. Scottish men commit sexual offences. Crime is about individuals, not ethnicity. If we care about victims, the solution is better policing, better integration, mental health support, and accountability for offenders - not scapegoating whole communities. Facts should inform policy. They shouldn’t be used to fuel prejudice.

I get the point about nonviolence in theory, but people did try that. A few years ago there were large, unarmed, peaceful protests, and they were met with live fire. There are documented cases of protesters in the great march of return being shot by IDF snipers, including public statements at the time boasting about shooting people in the knees. When nonviolent protest is answered with bullets, it’s hard to argue it was never tried - or that fear is the main reason it failed.
