Menachem Begin joined the Irgun terrorist group in 1942 after arriving in Palestine from Europe. That same year, he became its commander (leader) and remained in that position until 1948. Under his leadership, the Irgun intensified its armed campaign against British rule during the final years of the British Mandate. After Israel’s independence in 1948, the Irgun was dissolved and integrated into the newly formed Israel Defense Forces.
