  18. Based on the historical context, Ukraine belongs to Poland.
  19. Ukraine became part of the Russian Empire gradually through a series of wars, treaties, and annexations between the 17th and 18th centuries, as Russia expanded westward and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth declined. Here’s a concise historical outline: 1. The Cossack Hetmanate and the Treaty of Pereyaslav (1654) In the mid-1600s, much of central and eastern Ukraine was ruled by Cossacks under Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. The Cossacks rebelled against Polish rule (1648–1657). In 1654, Khmelnytsky sought protection from Tsar Alexis I of Russia, leading to the Treaty of Pereyaslav. This treaty brought the Cossack Hetmanate under Russian “protection,” effectively starting Ukraine’s alignment with the Tsardom of Russia. 2. Partition of Ukraine Between Russia and Poland The west (Right Bank Ukraine) stayed under Polish control, while the east (Left Bank Ukraine) came under Moscow’s influence. After several wars between Russia and Poland, the Treaty of Andrusovo (1667) formalized this split. Left Bank Ukraine (including Kyiv) → Russia Right Bank Ukraine → Poland 3. Gradual Loss of Autonomy Over the next century, the Cossack Hetmanate’s autonomy was reduced. By the 1760s, Catherine the Great abolished the Hetmanate and integrated it directly into the Russian imperial system. The Zaporozhian Sich (Cossack military stronghold) was destroyed in 1775, ending Cossack independence. 4. The Partitions of Poland (1772–1795) When Poland was partitioned by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, Russia gained control over most of Right Bank Ukraine, uniting almost all Ukrainian lands under the Russian Empire (except western areas under Austria). 5. Summary By 1795, nearly all of modern-day Ukraine was under Russian rule, except for Galicia and Transcarpathia, which went to Austria. Eastern Ukraine → absorbed earlier via Cossack alliance Western Ukraine → taken from Poland in the partitions
