  1. if you havent done it already take the time to learn the tone rules. really helps with reading and especially writing. the tone rules are quite dificult to learn but really worth doing. search on this forum and youll find some good advice for learning them.

  2. Can anyone recommend a resort on samui's west coast? Something not too fancy maybe around 2 - 3,000 baht per night. My retired parents visiting for a few days and I think they would enjoy this quiet part of the island. Close proximity to things like quiet beaches, waterfalls, temples and thai markets are what they are after.

I think somewhere in Lipa Noi would be ideal.

    thanks in advance.

  3. Sometimes you can fix that by downloading the .xpi file to your desktop, then:

    1. change the file extension from .xpi to .zip and unzip the contents

    2. open up the .rdf file in Notepad

    3. change the maxversion to the version of your Firefox eg 3.0.4 and save

    4. zip up all the files again that you previously unzipped

    5. change the extension back to .xpi

6 open up Firefox then drag the xpi file onto Firefox and follow the prompts thereafter.

thanks... i will try that and report back...

sounds a bit difficult for me though!

  4. I just downloaded th new firefox and this plug in no longer works.. I wouldnt have downloaded the new firefox had I known this as i use this plug in alot. Anyone know if there is a new version for the latest firefox?

Is there a way to only increase the size of the Thai font in your internet browser (and not the Roman font)? I am using firefox and IE on windows and konqueror and firefox on linux.

There is a plug-in written by Mike of www.thai2english.com to increase the display of Thai font in Firefox 2

Right Click Here for the plug-in

Then select "Save Link As" to save the file largethai.xpi to your harddisk

    Installation instruction

    -------------------------

    1. Select FILE from pull-down menu

    2. Select Open File

    3. From Open dialogue: Pick largethai.xpi you downloaded.

    4. Wait for installation to complete.

    5. Click Install Now button in Software Installation dialogue.

    6. Restart Firefox.

    7. Click RIGHT mouse and select Increase Thai Text Size.

You should notice an increase in the size of all the Thai fonts where the rest remain the same.

    Enjoy

  5. I have my own method for middle class consonants which is pretty (very) silly but works for me. here it is if anyone is interested:

middle class consonants. think of a middle class dinner party hosted by a child ด and his pet turtle ต. they are eating chicken ก leaves บ and fish ป from bowls อ and plates จ. Instead of cuttlery they are using a spear ฏ. They are wearing party crowns ฎ. note: (they are NOT eating eggs ข)

  6. Thank you for your email.

We appreciate you taking the time to email us your feedback on the errors you found in our Thai BYKI. I’m going to pass them along to our product team so they can look into them. I’m also going to refund your order back in full. If you’d like to keep the product that’s ok. If you happen to find other errors in your time using it, we would appreciate if you can email them to us so we can forward them along as well so we can have them fixed.

    Kind Regards,

    Customer Service

    Transparent Language

Result! can still use the software to create my own learning lists.

  7. I need to get medical insurance and have been looking at getting local medical cover here in thailand. for the last 2 years i have used travel insurance and only recently thought about having my insurance locally. However looking at the premiums it seems getting travel insurance from UK is cheaper and the cover is better.

for the equivalent of 13,500 baht I can get £3,000,000 (156,000,000 baht!!) medical cover and £2,000,000 personal liability (although personal liability doesnt cover motorbikes)

the medical cover i have been looking at here costs 29,000 baht and covers only 1,500,000 baht in medical expenses.

Why the huge difference? Am i missing something? is there an advantage to using local insurance that I have missed??

    thanks

Where to start ………………. First if you are here on holiday then Travel insurance may well suffice but it will not cover you when you decided to live here.

One of the many benefits with a "local" medical policy is the fact the hospital will take you straight in, in an emergency, where a foreign companies policy they have to contact the company to get clearance.

thanks for reply... thought there must be more to it than first impressions..

I do live here. business, work permit etc.. maybe travel insurance isnt valid becasue of this... hmm. I still dont understand why the level of cover seems much higher on the cheaper UK based product which in addition is valid worldwide though .

think i need to speak to a broker.

  9. Sorry to trash up the thread (as ususal :D ) but i have to say, you just recently came to Samui but you already need marmite?

You English guys, why do you even bother to leave your country?

Now heres a crasy idea, why not try tom yam soop, or kao pat gai, pad thai, or some other delesios meal from over here. Or perhaps...i don´t know...go back? :o .

Kidding, there´s many enough of you here already for you to find your marmite.

    Dont worry! :D .

I tried substituting tom yam soop for branston but it made the bread soggy in my cheese sarnies.

  10. I was impressed with the Free BYKI software which looks like an excellent tool for learning a foreign language. However I just paid for the ''deluxe'' version and after browsing it for 10 minutes I have found it full of mistakes. And they are (unless I am very much mistaken) very very basic mistakes too! Its unbelievable.

Here are a few examples (and remember I have only looked through it for 10 minutes or so and I am by know means an expert on Thai)

Snow - ตก ( actual meaning 'fall')

Arm - มือ (actual meaning 'hand')

To learn - สอน (actual meaning 'teach')

To taste - ลอง (actual meaning 'try')

Just a warning to anyone planning to use this software. Luckily I know some Thai already so I didnt waste my time learning these wrong words... Its a huge shame becasue the software platform is excellent. I have contacted them regarding this - will be interesting to see what they have to say about it.

    BYKI - ไปขี้

  11. I can just about tell the sounds apart - in a quick test then between ใบ and ไป i got about 80%. but it appears I can only make the ป sound! weird as I am sure the บ sound is much more common in english. hmmm..

  12. I thought I was getting the hang of Thai but having real difficulties prounouncing the difference between the words ใบ and ไป... basically every time I try to say ใบ it comes out as ไป.

driving me up the wall and the missus thinks its hilarious.. any tips please!!!

    :S

  13. the amari is an excellent choice.. the north end of chaweng beach is really quiet and relaxed but only 10 - 15 mins stroll into the bustling town centre...

I've been here a couple of years and just drove round the island for the first time in ages.. visited a few of the waterfalls and ate thai food on the beach in Tong Krut. I can tell you now that Samui is an absolutely beautiful island and anyone who says otherwise hasn't got a clue.
