"Data Atlas suggest that in 2010 Canada had 578 burglaries per 100,000 people"   10 years ago

"In the same year knoema.com suggested the Thai rate was just 9.6 per 100,000."   I think they omitted to say per month, per week or maybe even per Day!!

"And the Thai burglary rate had almost halved by 2016." from when to when??

Just another instance of quoted figures not being right

  2. The first thing I learnt in LOS was..."How do you know when a Thai female is lying .........Their lips are moving"!

Never the less as several have already mentioned we all do it's just the shade of black to white and the difference between eastern and western cultures and how they treat lying. Westerns condone it but Buddhists I understand can sometimes make merit.

We have to be tolerant andmake own decisions based on circumstsnces.

  3. I am not certain about the USA but I regularly transfer electronically to & from my Australian Bank and my KTB account then from KTB to basically any bank or branch in Thailand.

The cost within KTB is generally free but to other Thai banks around 20/30 THB

I have found when transferring from Australia I get a better Forex rate if I send in AUD and let KTB do the conversion and I pay a flat $20 to my Aussie bank and I think KTB charges me 30THB It takes 24 hours providing I meet the Australian cutoff times [1pm Thai time]. Occasionally if I do it earlier enough it is same day

Western Union cost are significantly higher [1500 Bht] and you never get a good Forex rate.

I do not believe that KTB is part of any Money Laundering as insinuated by another TV member.

  4. I am not making any judgement but here is an Email from a Jetstar A320 captain on the German Wings crash

    *************************

It begins to look horribly like the bulletin issued by Airbus as OEB 48 about frozen angle of attack probes has had another victim. The Air Asia A320 showed all the same symptoms. Just after finishing a climb and accelerating and a dive that was unrecoverable unless you pluck yourself off the ceiling and know to turn at least two of the three flight computers off and pull out smoothly from the dive. The simulator recreations are apparently so frightening from the plunge that no one has had the spare time to make a broadcast on the radio as it pitches down so violently.

Airbus has sent nothing to operators except to reinforce OEB 48 about an uncontrollable nose down pitch. I don't know if that means they have nothing or are too scared legally to say anything without having a fix.

I will send you anything technical that Airbus sends us.

  5. I brought in about 10 tea chest size boxes a few years back from Perth and had no hassles payments etc. and they were delivered to my door

I went to Perth and flew back to BKK but sent the boxes unaccompanied baggage through an agent at the airport. I just delivered them a few days before, took my ticket and a full inventory - paid them the freight about $500 and they did the rest. At that stage I was on a 1 year non-imm O

The goods arrived about 3 days later.

    Was easy!

  6. I'll probably be lambasted for this but anyway I personally reckon a better forum for the sort of challenge that you have, I have found, is the Buriram Expats. I joined it as I am now living in Isaan as well and the practical and sensible advice I have since I joined is excellent and relevant and has never gone off on a tangent.

I think I saw that you have found a builder in Buriram anyway, which I hope convinces you that it is "horses for courses'. Please feel free to PM me if I am still allowed to be a member of TVF after suggesting that this forum is not necessarily for everyone but does provide a service if certain areas.

    Regards & good luck

  7. Hi

I have just read all the posts on this matter and am hoping that some can help me as well

Can anyone make any recommendations for a contractor to put in a full system. Well - pump - 2 tanks & stands [one for garden & 1 to be filtered/treated if necessary for 2 storey house & Laundry] - irrigation/piping.

We have an existing but very old well that seems to have water at about 8-10metres but not certain if it can be used. Any ideas on getting the water tested?

I am about 90 kms from Buriram in Chompun Buri, 20 kms from Satuek in Surin Province

    Thanks in anticipation.

  8. It has been interesting to read the various comments from Members about this misunderstood symbol and its affect old society through the ages. I do not want to debate any aspects but hope that my input will help explain &/or clarify it.

    ******************************

The swastika is an extremely powerful symbol. The Nazis used it to murder millions of people, but for centuries it had positive meanings but today the symbol is most commonly associated with Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, neo-Nazis and other hate groups

    The Oldest Known Symbol

The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. (That even predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!) Artefacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BCE.

During the following thousand years, the image of the swastika was used by many cultures around the world, including in China, Japan, India, and southern Europe. By the Middle Ages, the swastika was a well known, if not commonly used, symbol but was called by many different names:

    • China - wan
    • England - fylfot
    • Germany - Hakenkreuz
    • Greece - tetraskelion and gammadion
    • India - swastika

Though it is not known for exactly how long, Native Americans also have long used the symbol of the swastika.

    The Original Meaning

The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.

Even in the early twentieth century, the swastika was still a symbol with positive connotations. For instance, the swastika was a common decoration that often adorned cigarette cases, postcards, coins, and buildings. During World War I, the swastika could even be found on the shoulder patches of the American 45th Division and on the Finnish air force until after World War II.

What Does the Swastika Mean Now?

There is a great debate as to what the swastika means now. For 3,000 years, the swastika meant life and good luck. But because of the Nazis, it has also taken on a meaning of death and hate.

These conflicting meanings are causing problems in today's society. For Buddhists and Hindus, the swastika is a very religious symbol that is commonly used.

Unfortunately, the Nazis were so effective at their use of the swastika emblem, that many do not even know any other meaning for the swastika.

Does the Direction of the Swastika Matter?

In ancient times, the direction of the swastika was interchangeable as can be seen on an ancient Chinese silk drawing.

Some cultures in the past had differentiated between the clockwise swastika and the counter-clockwise sauvastika. In these cultures the swastika symbolized health and life while the sauvastika took on a mystical meaning of bad-luck or misfortune. Since the Nazis use of the swastika, some people are trying to differentiate the two meanings of the swastika by varying its direction - trying to make the clockwise, Nazi version of the swastika mean hate and death while the counter-clockwise version would hold the ancient meaning of the symbol, life and good-luck.

  9. Hi All

I also am very interested in adopting my wife's 7 year old daughter. We have had 2 other children in out 5 year marriage but I keep getting negative feed back about adopting my step daughter.

I understand her natural father has no objections and is fact not on her birth certificate.

    What is the process?

Can we do it ourselves and how do we start?

Probably have to pay a lawyer a high fee....!!!!

Any accurate info would be appreciated.

  10. I am not certain about elsewhere but in Pattaya it is possible to get some broadcasts through cable TV and replays through True BUT I know of cases where bar owners were showing them and the BIB took their managers away to the monkey house and they weren't released until sizeable "fines" were paid. It is amazing how corrupt and opportunistic Thai business & public service are.

I know nothing will happen but at least I am certain GMM and the BIB must somehow be in bed together

  11. It appears that this thread is 3-4 years old.

Is there a newer thread on this topic?

    Are there any updates?

    Has the position altered.?

The recommented link to CAT also seems obsolete

I need a reliable internett acces in Issaan and there is no ADSL or acceptable telephone facility

    Thanks

  12. Hi

I am looking to charter a small bus [not a mini van] for a few days over Songkran for a golf group. Anyone got any contacts. I have sent afew emails to bus companies but not 1 response. Probably because my enquiry was in English.

    Thanks

  13. My wife has checked with Banglamung licencing and has been told we can open tomorrow but in any case we will be keeping it low key with the doors basically closed with only food and soft drinks outside. If you are in the Soi Buakhao area feel free to drop in.

  14. 200% SCAM. I have seen almost the exact wording several times and on contacting them they are not even in the country nominated and in fact have problems accessing there email account. The email went to many on their contact lists. The ones that I was involved in were all using Hotmail but changed after this.
