I give high marks to Dr.Pasakorn at BNH Hospital in Bangkok.  Among other things, he quickly and correctly diagnosed the cause of repeated ear infections after I went through a long series of different antibiotics at another hospital.  He taught me a trick to fend off further infections, as well, *without* antibiotics.

Thanks much. I usually stay away from BNH because of bad experiences there in the past, but I may give him a try.

  2. Have an inner ear infection, right side. Need a specialist, preferably at Bumrungrad, but in Bangkok OK.

Symptoms: A sore ear, but also sore jaw on right side which cracks/pops a bit when I eat. Amoxicillin has helped the infection but jaw pain still remains (along with noisy inner ear when I chew.)

    Thanks in advance.

  3. I'm 70, and I've had sore knee tendons for a year and have been diagnosed with patella tendinitis by a reputable doctor in Bangkok.

Has anyone here found a treatment that works for patella tendinitis, eg: physiotherapy, massage, stretching, strengthening exercises, etc?

  4. Thanks for the tip. Never heard of the maker but...

looks interesting, but probably not a lot of customer feedback yet about glitches or long term usage problems for a 2016 phone. No Amazon reviews yet either (maybe not sold in US). On GSM there are 4 reviews.

I'd be more comfortable with an older model still being sold by a company known for reliable hardware that had a lot of positive reviews. Older models sometimes drop in price as newer models come into being and lots of reviews give you an idea of whether you'd be buying a lemon.

It seems to be sold in Thailand generally.

  5. Hi all,

    The title says it all.

I want a shop that deals in *good* used phones, and ideally with a return policy. I'd prefer and Android phone from a well known maker.

There seem to be many shops that will sell you phones that they know have serious problems, but won't tell you. Or shops that don''t do much testing of their used phones to make sure they're functioning well and without a return policy if it fails soon after you buy it.

    thanks in advance

  6. Thanks for replying.

But I was using the pinworm simply as an *example* so others could understand better what my concern was in general (reinfection and how it can happen with worms). Does what you say about pinworms apply equally to other worms that are common in Thailand?

I have no idea *what* I have except that it seems to have been helped by using albendazole.

If this treatment fails, I'll be going to a hospital with a good lab as every sensible person would. I suppose Bumrungrad is as good as any other. Maybe I should say "(it's the lab and) the doctor, not the hospital".

    thanks again

  7. There are worms, like  pinworms that are initially acquired by mouth, but escape the anus to cause reinfections. Is there a need to apply a topical antibiotic around the anus to kill the organism or eggs that may be present there and may cause recurring infections? That was my simple question.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinworm_infection

I feel much better after the albendazole  treatment and hope that the 400mg I took at bedtime for 3 consecutive days has cured the infection, whatever it was. I took my last pill last night.

If it hasn't I will go into the hospital and do my cycle of stool tests until the organism has been identified and the appropriate antibiotic prescribed as I usually do.

PS I doubt these are parasites. since the symptoms developed within 6 hours after eating.

I hope this is clear enough for you to understand.

    6. Other medications: Some medications such as a beta blocker in high dose are an erection blocker. Review your medications with your physician.

What you say is all true, from what I've read.

I'm on an SSRI, essential to prevent a crippling depression.  I've been on it for 20 years and it's made life not only worth living, but worth celebrating.

....except for sexual side effects, for which the SSRIs are famous.

Good news though. The flag was flying at full staff a few nights ago. It doesn't fly for *too* long but long enough. (PS: I realize how inane these male conversations must appear to many. My response: if you haven't been there, don't ridicule.)

  9. Just asking.

I once got a bacterial infection from changing my son's diapers 25 years ago, and would keep getting reinfected despite successful antibiotic cure. Turned out the little buggers were seeking shelter outside my body and would crawl back in to reinfect me. (and my toddler son) A very dedicated nurse figured it out (that I needed an external antibiotic cream).

Should I be also using an antibiotic cream around my, um, anus as extra protect against reinfection?

If so, and for general info, what's the names of some of these creams?

    Thanks to all.

  10. >>these aren't creams.

    Sheryl,

A different story here. At least *some* are....

For the last decade, pharmaceutical companies have been testing and developing topical creams that contain alprostadil. Alprostadil is currently prescribed in the U.S. as an injection or as a penile suppository to treat ED. Vitaros, a cream formulation of alprostadil, is approved in Canada and Europe.Feb 7, 2015

  11. Sad but true. I'm 70 and still seem to need sex and Viagra no longer can reanimate my little Frankenstein. I haven't tried Cialis but gather it's just a longer acting version of Viagra (besides being very expensive).

I read somewhere that some of the creams below, applied directly to the skin of the penis are more effective.

    Are any available in BKK?

    PGE1

    Alprostadil

    Trimix

    Prostaglandin E1 (Alprostadil)

    Papaverine

    Phentolamine

    Thanks in advance

  12. Lubuntu is ultra light and in my use of it, very stable. The desktop is very configurable too and pretty, especially considering that it's ultra light. Plus it has the support of a large user community so it's easier to find answers online if you run into trouble.

Then there's xubuntu, which is also light (though not as light as lubuntu) and stable. The desktop (xfce) is stable though not as easy to configure to your taste as  the Desktop Lubuntu uses.

Both of these distros run well on very light machine specs (eg with machines light on ram and disk space), and would probably function well without hardware upgrades (eg memory). Lubuntu requires a minimum of 128 MB of RAM and 2 GB disk space, so it should run on half a gig of RAM. D/L it, slap it onto a stick and try it out, and install if it's not hopelessly slow on the stick.

I'd run a light browser though, unless you upgrade your memory. Browsers are memory hogs. I'd research this a bit. An ultralight browser is Midori, very quick, but it's a bit basic but takes up very little memory as long a you don't open a ton of tabs. The whole browser size is something lke 50K.

    http://thesimplecomputer.info/1-month-with-the-midori-web-browser

Three's a light version of Firefox called Palemoon, but some extensions don't work on it. It's pretty close to a real FF experience though so what you'd expect is there.

    cheers.

  13. I need some large ones, say 10x16, 12x20 inches. Exact size doesn't matter. These bags are clear, freezer capable, and durable: the ziplock pulls don't fall apart after a month.

We have a brand in the US called "Hefty" which have these characteristics. They last for years.

    Thanks in advance.

  14. Not me but a friend, 76, Gleason score grade 8 (pretty serious apparently).

He's looking for a capable surgeon in Bangkok. Apparently there are different surgery techniques (eg cryogenic). He's not internet savvy so I thought I'd post on his behalf here in case others know about treatment options and recommended doctors.

The Wikipedia article on Gleason scores isn't encouraging:

"Tumors with Gleason scores 8-10 tend to be advanced neoplasms that are unlikely to be cured. Although some evidence suggests that prostate cancers will become more aggressive over time, most often Gleason scores remain stable for a few years."

Thanks for any help in advance.

What about deep down soi 4, just a little away from the nightlife, plenty of guys similar age, coffee shops one or two quieter bars, and Bangkok,s latest park right on your doorstep. If I was a free and single 70 year old that's probably where I would be.

Of course I know the, ahem, upper part of Soi 4 quite well, but I've never been down more than 5 blocks from Sukumvit. I'll wander through it in the next few days and scope it out.

  16. This concerns my retirement visa application actually. One must deposit something like 750,000B in a Thai bank. I wonder if depositing it at the Bangkok Branch in New York City would qualify? And presumably I could transfer money deposited there to a branch in Thailand if the money had to reside in Thailand. The reason to deposit in the US would be that it's simpler to transfer money within the US than doing a wire or something else to get it to a Thai bank over here.

So has anyone every dealt with the New York branch?

    thanks

  17. Sorry if this seems a lot like my last post. I've rethought it a bit...Location isn't so important any more. A friendly expat community is....

I'm 70 and looking for a *sociable* older expat neighborhood within a 10/20 minutes walk from the BTS or MRT. I'd like cafes, bars, eatries or parks where I can chat up and meet people, since I probably won't know a soul when I arrive. Quiet walkable streets is a plus.

I'm fine with a **Studio Apartment** and have a 10-20K/mo. budget, preferring the lower end since utilities add considerably to that. I do
n't need much space, or a conference room, or marble bathtub. ("Just a place to lay my hat and a few friends", as Dorothy Parker once said)

All this is on Doctor's Orders: "If you want to keep walking, you can't keep climbing stairs", he told me. (my GH of 8 years here is a 2-3 floor walkup). So an elevator would help my knees and I'll have easier access to concerts and discussions in "The Big City".

Thanks for your patience. I know I could plod all over Bangkok, but I'd rather plod all over people's recommendations first.
